I need some opinions on this.

I got a free trip to Baltimore. Where should I go?

Here's the context. I have been applying to statistics and biostatistics schools, so far University of Washington has accepted me already (bragging for the win! - by the way I may make a similar blog about Seattle in the next a few days depending on if UW covers my transportation or not) and the John Hopkins University has sent me an email which I believe is a cryptic message to have an interview with me (if you dealt with JHU before please give me some opinions and/or tips on this!). Basically, I get to go there for free; the department will cover my travel expenses.

Beside going to JHU (for the serious stuff) I think this will also be an excellent opportunity for me to see the city. If there is anywhere you think I should go, please tell me. Preferably not too crazy, however, since original purpose of the trip is for something greater than merely entertainment.

Thanks TL and EvilTeletubby.

EDIT: I didn't know Washington DC is so close to Baltimore. Maybe it's better (and safer) for me to ask: where should I go in DC?

the aquarium there is amazing. It's kinda expensive to get in though like 25 bucks or something but well worth it.

Hit up some food joints. Never been to the baltimore/dc area but whenever i go someplace i've never been, I always go to the best places for food.

Too bad it's not blue crab season. Otherwise that's pretty much a given in terms of food.

Haha, that is exactly what I wanted to write when I saw the blog.
All I know about Baltimore is from The Wire. Is it really that bad?

The inner harbor ofc...go there. Lots of restaurants, boat stuff, nice place to walk, etc.

nowhere near depending on the area you are either just fine or shot...the wire just takes the worst of baltimore and brings it to the front its that bad in some areas...i fear for my life bc the whole city changes with each block, and since i dont live in it (i live near it and go into it occasionally) im never 100% sure where is safe and where isnt...general rule of thumb though...if anything looks remotely scary or dangerous GTFO

I think the best thing to go to is the inner harbor. I'm sure there are other places to go but as someone said above you don't really want to be wandering around alone in Baltimore. The inner harbor is good but you can run into some pretty sketchy parts just going 1-2 blocks away. Sorry to anyone who might like it there, but I think Baltimore is pretty trashy in general. Maybe use any leftover time to visit DC or something?

EDIT: Congrats on the positive response from JHU

Yeah, Baltimore is called the murder capital of the world, but you just need to be street smart and stay away from sketchy places. I spent a couple summers at JHU, and on campus was great, very safe, but seriously, you walk like five blocks in one direction and it's suddenly really different.

EDIT: I live in DC. Much safer.

I'm an undergrad student at jhu,

couple things i should point out (even if they have been already)
1. don't go walking away from campus, If you're going somewhere far, take a bus or cab, there are some very bad neighborhoods
2. jhu is nice, inner harbor is nice, little italy has good food, towson mall is mediocre (not tourist attraction worthy), besides that Baltimore is a really really crappy city

depending on where you are from, you could try going to dc for the day (marc trains run fairly often out of penn station, which is a $7-9ish cab away from campus)

The harbor is nice. There are a lot of really good restaurants pretty much everywhere in the city. JHU campus is nice. Fells point is a nice town kind of area in the city.

Otherwise there's nothing to do here if you're under 21.

Should get a mod to change the title to "What to do in DC (instead of Baltimore lol)??"

More like "What to do in DC (since I don't want to be murdered in Baltimore)". I think I know DC better.... Whitehouse! And that's about it.

Maybe something like "Baltimore and DC?" is a much better title.

The club scene in Baltimore is really nice. So is DC, depending on what you like. Doesn't sound like what you're looking for though. DC has a bunch of nice bar/lounges, (kinda expensive though), and some absolutely fantastic restaurants too.

The Aquarium in B-more is fantastic, obviously, and the inner harbor is gorgeous. Lots of nice little restaurants right near the docks, etc. Shame you can't go sailing!

I've lived in DC basically my whole life so all the normal "touristy" things are really dull imho. There are wonderful museums though, (granted I haven't been since I was little), and obviously there's always the Washington monument, national cathedral, capital building, etc etc. If you do come to DC on a weekend though, come to one of our TL nerd dinners! Meet the rest of the DC starcraft nerds for some delicious BBQ!
I admire your commitment to being *very* oily
