So I have a Dell box that was running Vista that I sort of moved off of when I got home this summer from school. After use by my brother the Computer ran hot for a very long time (like the heatsync came unglued from the processor) and proceded to blue screen itself into oblivion. Worrying that all of my media and school work would be lost I tested memory and hard disks, look for a weak link. However my work proved fruitless and I thought all to be lost. I have now however managed to boot into Ubuntu AMD-64 from a live Cd and can see all of my hard disk stuff. Yay!

time to run rsync

Me 1, Microsoft 0.

Yeah, fighting Microsoft is almost an insta-win. Only thing it beats is Mac.

Congrats! It's a great feeling you get when you realize that the work you thought you'd lost is saveable.

Macs can blue screen too. Whats your point? XP SP2+ is still the most stable OS to date and Windows 7 is aiming to be pretty solid.

I still however recommend you fix the extreme heating issues you have or your processor won't last long.

IT JUST IS.
It always is.
Yesterday my microwave oven exploded. I'm pretty sure it was running on Windows.

XP SP2/3 definitely aren't the most stable OS, however what MutaDoom is saying is that the only thing microsoft beats is apple/macs, not the other way around.

Just take out the hard drive and connect it to another pc if everything else fails. Or buy a hdd case.

As for overheating, I bet it's a fan issue.

qft...running XP pro SP2 since 2004
I don't think there has ever been a more stable GUI-based OS.
Ironically it also supports the widest range of software (certainly more than Vista) and everything supports more than Apple OS. Linux distros are great if you are comfortable working on the cmd prompt and installing packages...not really that user friendly.

Having used a Mac and Mac server for school and SP2 else where I can most certainly say I trust my SP2 more. I've only have had maybe 3 crashes on the SP2, one from a beta program, 2 from bad ram sticks.

Nowadays Linux distros come with plethora of GUI tools so you barely have to use the command prompt for tasks most users need. And they're more stable than Windows XP.

To be fair, linux is only stable if you don't do anything. If you are changing settings or updating packages you can very easily break stuff (I have run into this issue several times) (also when I say packages I mean stuff like xorg, not stuff like firefox that nothing depends on).

so what you're saying is windows blue screens in order to save your cpu from frying but linux let's you keep going?

also you could just stick the harddive into a another computer since it's only a cpu problem.
the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

Stable in the sense that DOS was stable; there is a very limited app package you can put on any linux kernal when in comparison to Windows.
