A few months ago I did a not so serious attempt at a segmented FF9 run however a few mistakes lead the final time being near ten hours. Since a few months have finally passed I have decided to do a casual run of the game at my own pace to familiarise myself in the game using people from the LR community as my test subjects while blogging along the way.
So here is part one of the train wreck that will be my casual ff9 run.
An intro that wouldn't be too far out of place in Link's awakening...
The game opens up with Zidane entering a darkened room. After a quick jump to the settings and stealing 43 gil from the back of the room we finally get to name Zidane properly and are greeted by the varies members of Tantalus who are a gang of thieves with one of the lines being rather accurate to how SeeKeR actually acts...
Bashing the X and square buttons causes a battle to ensue against a man in a dragon costume unfortunately it also forces the use of the worst characters in the game ( I'm looking at you Cinna ) during the battle who I demote to steal duty getting Seeker a new weapon on the first swipe.
LOOK CINNA DID SOMETHING USEFUL!
Winning the battle having Cinna steal some wrists and another potion the Tantalus gang unveil their plans to kidnap the princess garnet (or dagger or Sarah depending on which of her many names you want to use) or if your really bored you can keep insisting you want to kidnap the queen forcing an alternate cut scene. Regardless of the choice you make (I went for the easy one) the game goes to a second cut scene introducing the best (and youngest) character of the series.
Vivi is always awesome
Gaining control of Vivi (and being mugged by a little girl for the ticket) I proceed to challenge the impossible task of running away from Puck the annoying rat kid through the first street. As anticipated it didn't go as expected and puck knocked over a helpless 6 month old child.

Retrieving the fake ticket the little girl gave Vivi from the floor and having Puck run off into the distance I find out that surprisingly the ticket was a fake and the little girl did in fact steal it ( Please note the little girl may not have stolen the ticket it is just very likely happened) As a punishment for showing a fake ticket to the ticket master he forces upon Vivi the cruellest form of slave labour by giving him three game cards telling him to seek out a thief / sword collector who kills people in multiple final fantasy games on how to play a small game ( Amazing advice to give a 6 month old child )

Ignoring the advice of the ticket master completely I run into an alleyway to find Puck (Not the Faerie Dragon) trying to steal a ladder which I gladly help him with running to a near by chapel ignoring the dialogue that should happen because Vivi is too awesome for pointless starter dialogue. Upon entering the chapel Vivi is brutally attacked by a Moogle seeking revenge for all the abuse I am about to do to them by dragging them all over the world and calling them because of miss clicks.
I promise to only call you when I need to save. For the love of god leave Vivi alone
Saving the game and preventing any possibility of me having to go through the first few scenes again I chase after Puck The slave master who continues to scare Vivi through his fear of heights. On the brighter side after Vivi gets through the ordeal I finally get to name the hero of the story.
Who saw this coming?
Drazerk and Puck run a few more buildings and start the third cut scene which introduces the third character to the game. Once the cut scene is over the game returns to the point of view of the Tantalus group who are performing the play I want to be your canary involving a battle with the tantalus leader only this time your not allowed to steal from him and the battle is filled with pointless special effects designed to waste time.
After Cinna sat around doing nothing because he is useless the game goes to a quick mini game where you have to impress nobles by pressing the buttons that appear on the screen without making a single mistake and doing it as quickly as you possibly can (Generally before they even fully appear on screen) if you don't impress all 100 nobles your deemed to failure and will have to restart the entire section. Luckily for me I got a perfect first section which enabled an easier second section to the mini game giving me the perfect 100/100

Upon regaining control of SeeKer the game quickly goes into more dialog where SeeKer falls in love with princess Garnet Dagger? Sarah??? ???? and chases her through the castle causing another jump in characters to Zorn and Thorn the court jesters who have possibly the best theme in the game.
While waiting 20 minutes to the music to get old the jesters run off to the queen to inform her of ????'s flight forcing the tin man from the wizard of Oz to get a name and save her.
Mister Adelbert mister Con at your service
Mister Adelbert mister Con decides to ignore the queen's order however and steal the moonstone Seeker won from the queen and then go save the game at the moogle in the guard house ending this section of the game until next time...
Side notes: I have no intention of doing mognet or the choco side quests and I am currently playing on an emulator

I never finished this game  I got stuck where you go to some island (I think) and in a castle with monsters that would replicate i think ? Like a weird mansion / castle place.
I just stopped playing, don't remember why.

9 is by far the best in the series. All the fuckin' nerds out there sayin' 7 is the best... they're just wrong, yo.
God damnit, OP. I gotta go pull my playstation out again.

Your either thinking of castle Ipsen which is a reversed castle where weaker attacks do more damage or the desert palace both of which are the a pain to navigate unless you play the game regularly or have a guide next to you.

It was good but not my favorite. Not enough end game content, which is what I love the most in rpgs, so obviously this one is pretty low on my FF favorite list. On the other hand, I liked its "main quest" more than a lot of other FFs.

That makes sense why I was doing nearly no damage to the monsters, lol! I couldnt kill them :D I would always die
I'm pretty sure it was Castle Ipsen, sounds really familiar.. somewhere in disc 3 i believe

I agree. 9 literally had everything a good RPG should have. I felt like it lacked in no area.
The game had a great story and had great characters. Consistent and balanced gameplay. Graphics that pushed it's console to the limits.
I really disliked the inconsistencies in FF7

Haha! Cinna useful!? That picture must be manipulated in some way, Cinna is the bane of this game, there is NO WAY that he can be useful! 
A friend and I am currently playing through the game, but due to regional problems (I live 300 km away from him) we only get to play every second month or so. We are at disc 4 just before Memoria and have played 48 hours ish - when you want all the lore you have to spend some time kekek
I know we haven't been the most efficient players haha ~^^~ But it sure is fun keke

Despite his horrific attack animation / damage his steal animation is pretty good and even then you can just skip his attacks during the play battles where stealing isn't an option.

The last two battles are pretty easy even on a speed / level 1 run if you know what you are doing (except for Necron using death on all four of your characters at once but even then Eiko's phoenix should always save you).
The only really hard fights are Kraken / Deathguise in Memoria and maybe the Ark in Olivert if your under geared which are difficult to take down due to the sheer fire power and random status effects they have.

About the sword mini game, what do you mean by

I always get like 97-99 at this stuff, so annoying...
Would this run be easy to adapt so that you could speed run in a single segment ?

The mini game is ~30 button presses
The first 15 can only be X Triangle or the arrow pads while the next 15 add Square and Circle to the mix a perfect first stage only has the use of X of Triangle which increases the speed you input them into allowing for a slower and safer second stage.
As for a speed run as a single segment its honestly not worth the risk when it comes down to it if you fail at the sword mini game you basically have to restart from the first Baku encounter meaning its around a 20 minute attempt each time with around 5-6 good chances of messing up ( Bad steals, Chapel dialogue etc etc )
