Hey guys. My name's Lauren. I'm a twenty-something who hasn't played an RTS since the campaign of Warcraft 2 when she was about nine, and I suck at Starcraft.

A buddy of mine works for MLG. Before he got his job there, he'd told me to get the game, and so I had, and it had collected dust for the past year until I finally pulled it out and decided to give it a shot. Campaign? Cool. Then he got his job, talked about it constantly, and I decided what the hell - let's give multiplayer a shot. Started off with Husky's "Introduction to RTS" videos, then decided to start playing against the computer.

Nuclear freaking disaster.

So I took a step back. Googled some more, found Day9 about two weeks ago. Watched three of his Newbie Tuesdays, got jazzed, got started. Bombed every. single. placement match. Landed Bronze, obviously. Learned to 4gate. Won some matches. Got overconfident. Lost a bunch more. Played with the flu... dropped eight places on the ladder.

It's an ugly story I have to tell. But I figure you and me, TL? We're gonna go far.

Somehow.

oh goodness, I remember being bronze, don't worry we were ALL that level at starcraft at one point or another just learn some openings (one for each match up) and practice them until they are near perfect and you'll be good to go!

good luck!

Learning 4gate is why you're bronze. Learn some decent macro build and you'll be light years ahead of everyone in bronze in no time.

I feel that army control and army composition are easiest to learn first. and it will give you the confidence to continue playing, what's the use of practicing for macro games if you have a huge army and no idea how to control it?

keep the game small, 1 and 2 base play is completely normal when starting out. (unless your zerg.)

inb4 huge flame attack in my direction.

Hey dude, just wanted to drop by and say: don't let them haters get you down.

Not that there are any in this thread, but there are always flamers on battle.net: It's the internet. There are always haters.

Play how you'd like and enjoy the game. Don't feel like you have to get out of bronze league if you don't want to; just have fun! If having fun means getting into the top 2% of players and being in Master League, that's great. It could also mean playing team games and 4v4s with your friends, or going and playing custom games like tower defense.

If you want to really get better, there is a lot of information on that, but like getting better at anything, getting truly good at Starcraft takes time, effort, dedication, and love for the game.
When you stare into the iCCup, the iCCup stares back.

there is no truth to this at all, 4gate is a great way for a newbie to learn the game, have fun and get better multitasking and forcefield micro.

Welcome to TL!

There's lots to learn from TL, so take it a step at a time. Also, don't forget that you're playing for enjoyment, not additional stress!

A number of Day[9] dailies post SC2 release were quite newbie friendly. Dailies from approximately 160-200 can be really helpful, plus you can see the birth of Funday Monday, Uniden, etc. That doesn't mean you'll see pros playing like that today, but between those dailies and some of the famous ones that are very specifically help oriented (#252 talks about mouse/keyboard mechanics and mini-map, etc.), it's imo more helpful than more recent Newbie Tuesdays, as a lot of the stuff there is more advanced now in line with the viewer base's experience of the last year of playing.

SC2 is a great game with an awesome community, but the problem is that a lot of players end up taking the game too seriously, stop having fun and it all ends being a huge mental investment for them without any dividends and all they get out of the game with their approach is frustration. Trust me, I was like that for a long time, so I can talk from experience. :/

Don't be that. Have fun, enjoy and embrace learning, don't play to win, play to grow as a player, don't blindly cheese, be mannered and there will be nothing in your way of enjoying playing the game

Holy cow. I didn't even think anyone read the blogs. Thanks for the words so far, everyone... I'm working on it, slowly, and I definitely am going to learn what I can here. I want to have fun, but hey - I wouldn't mind getting better.

I'll take a look at those. I'd been just looking through his Newbie Tuesdays on the site and seeing which ones seemed like they'd be most helpful for me at the stage I'm in; I hadn't even considered looking at the other earlier dailies - I did notice that they seem to get more specialized, so I haven't checked a loto f them out. I got a lot out of 252, though. Thanks!

I'll have to agree with nttea. Learning 4 gate is actually good for a newbie for several reasons.
1)It's a simple build order
2)It's fun, you don't have to wait to long to get into the action
3)Don't have to worry about macro quite yet. You'll practice internalizing some stuff, and then you can progress to macro builds.

Don't stress out about the games too much!
