As I mentioned before in my 30,000 post blog, I (then) had just applied for several universities, looking to further extend my knowledge on the East Asian region and (hopefully) further my learning of Korean and its related culture.

Unfortunately due to me choking in my final exams (stress, nerves etc), I got into the course I least wanted, which was a Bachelor of Arts at UWS (University of Western Sydney). My intent with this is to do a year over there (as I looked at their classes and they seemed pretty interesting and relevant) and then transferring over to a more higher university (UNSW, USYD or ANU) with the intent of completing my degree, majoring in Korean (UWS doesn't offer a Korean major).

Either way, I'm going to take the year off, to earn some money (I've got a job lined up at a restaurant at the end of the month, I hope), and to see if I can do anything e-Sports related outside of my city, now that I'm out of school.

Anyway... this might be bleak, but are there any forum goers that go to UWS at the moment? Heard lots of stuff about Western Sydney being dodgy, but that's about it.

I go to USYD, but I have friends that go to UWS. It isn't too dodgy or anything from what they say, so I wouldn't worry.

What dodgy rumours have you heard about UWS? I have a friend there doing a Bachelor of Science degree and she really enjoys it there. Lots of schools get bad reputations just from the area they're in and exaggeration from people that don't even go there. Just out of curiosity what subjects did you do and what were your preferences?

Sorry, I didn't mean the university itself, but rather the area of Western Sydney (in comparison to other parts where UNSW and USYD are located).

English (Advanced), Mathematics, Economics, Modern History, Software Design

After the first year of the course I hated the fucking guts out of all of them except Modern History. Especially Mathematics and Software Design, my brain couldn't handle Maths at all for some reason and I completely lost interest in Software as it was extremely tedious in the end. I really regret doing these subjects looking back in hindsight (ideally I would have liked to have focused more on the humanity-style subjects e.g Legal, Modern and a language of some sort).

My preferences were;
Arts/Asia-Pacific Studies at ANU,
Arts at both UNSW/USYD,
just the Asia-Pacific degree at ANU
then lastly the UWS course.

If somehow I manage to get a second round offer, then I'll definitely jump on it, but for now it looks like UWS.

IT'S OKAY GTR YOU'LL RAPE UNI

My friend does the exact same course you do, he doesn't like it but he doesn't hate it (enough to motivate him to study and xfer anyway).

If you're aiming to xfer, make sure you don't skip too many days. I got into the habit of not going to Uni and ended up fucking up my first year (was doing so well before I discovered SC2 beta), it'll be even easier to fall into that habit in UWS. I hear your exams are pretty easy though.

GTR where do you live in OZ? you could also try transferring after the 1st year? If your grades are like 70% (distinction) level above.

Hey GTR. So in Australia, you apply to a university, get in, and then you can choose from a variety of subjects once you're there? That sounds awesome. Over here, you have to pick one degree course (Maths, Politics etc) when you're 16/17 and that's that.

Ouch man, i live in WA and the entrance scores for university are ridiculously low. A score of 70 would easily net a commerce degree into the 'second' best university here. Even engineering is only some where around 80 - 85 at UWA, so doing asian studies at a uni like curtin (which i'm told is not that bad) you would've been able to get in. Then again the competition here is nothing like over east, i feel like a 99.95'er here would only be like 98 over there though i could be mistaken.

Also from the easterners i know, UWS is kind of a joke to them. Its like the ECU of NSW not that you would get that reference.

But i know if you do well at university, transferring should not be too much of a problem.

Oh dude, you could go to Macquarie Uni or UTS with that mark, which are both better than UWS. ANU has rather low cut off marks as well, although i don't know how low.

Do you know which campus you're going to? (Edit: I live about 15 mins away from one of the UWS campuses [or campusi?])

While I go to UTS, I do know quite a few people who go to UWS since I live in Western Sydney. Its probably not as bad as people say it is. I don't think there's anything wrong with the university itself (I hear the same complaints about lecturers/tutors/subjects that I hear from other unis), but I think the main difference is the people there.

My SRC co-ordinator at school told me to accept all offers because you cal always reject them later on.

I'm not sure when they expire though. Open offers here and accept it. Most probably on this website.

can you elaborate on how the australian system works for university applications?

and what is ATAR and how does it compare to the SAT? if it is comparable, what SAT score would your score be equivalent to?

hm, i might sound stupid so try and bare with me.

when you enter grade 11, you have to do english (compulsory) and ten other 'units' (english is two units, most courses are two units, while stuff like extension english, extension mathematics are one). two unit courses are like the ap courses you have in america i guess, where you can do stuff like histories, legal studies, economics etc.

at the start of grade 12 you can drop down to ten units, but its optional. i did it because i didn't like the direction physics was going. this is where marks matter. half of what determines your atar comes from assessments throughout the year, the other half from an external examination at the end of the course.

edit: i am aware this applies differently for every state, but this is for nsw.

i think there are way too many variables to do a direct atar -> sat conversion.

edit 2: sorry forgot to talk about how the uni applications work.

basically you can choose whatever course/university you want into. it uses a preference system where your highest preference is the one you get first offered. however all courses have a minimum atar to be considered an offer for. unfortunately the courses i wanted were in the 80-85's and since i fucked up in my exams i had to go to my last preference which was pretty much plan b.
it's all done through a third party, so none of the fancy application to university stuff with essays like you guys have in america.
