I was under the impression the word came from poker, and came with the visual of a snowball rolling down a hill and picking up mass, like a poker player in a tournament stacking people and getting bigger and bigger and more unstoppable. I didn't know that it originally came from basketball players... And I kind of don't even believe that. If someone is doing a series of skillful things in a row, I still tend to say they're balling out of control ![]() But yeah, a girl getting a nice gift for her boyfriend is not baller... It just devalues the use of the word IMO to something as mundane as being synonymous with "cool," which I think it's clear it shouldn't be. PS: I believe Hemingway once said "Baller is not synonymous with cool, you retards."

the word has its uses though. as Hot_Bid said on p.1: On December 29 2008 04:14 Hot_Bid wrote: nony's pretty baller for advancing to the finals of courage now thats warranted. Boxer locking down ~carriers or blinding observers to take out carriers with cloaked wraiths etc - makes him a baller. The word has its situational uses, but generally yes - enough is enough ![]()

The English language is evolving, but it isn't evolving randomly. It has structure, and everyone you intend to understand you should know what you mean by the word when you use it. You can't just randomly decide this word means this now... There has to be a social event or political reason for the word to have a new meaning. Calling everything baller is just the result of a lot of people not understanding what the word means to begin with. If it catches on that everyone uses it for everything, you'll see the word disappear from common English in ten years like every other meaningless overused word.

Of course you cant just randomly use one word to mean something totally different inconsistently, you can however form definitions of already existing words and give them a new meaning, on hopes that this definition will catch on as a popular slang phrase. Over time Slang either dies out or it becomes accepted vernacular of a language. Baller may become the new gay or the new cool, or it may not. Time will tell, not some ranting nerd on the internet.
