Americans (or at least, English speaking people) always wait when I say 'hang on, phone' or something Yeah I think that's generally true. Most frustrating game ever , a ZvP, I said something like pp cause I had to take a piss (I drink a lot of water^^) he just unpauses right away, he attacks me with zealots I defend with mutas -> kill his main and his natural with muta hydra while he keeps spamming korean stuff which I can't read but it surely wasnt very friendly, he only has his hidden expansion (defended by cannons and too many HT to break with just hydras) left so I'm waiting for him to gg so I can finally take a fucking piss. But I suck so bad that eventually after he killed ashit ton of drones with HT drop and a base with DT drop I still somehow miraculously manage to lose that game, while he keeps insulting me and calling me a chobo - turns out the guy was A- the season before(my ZvP is D+ and it was a D lvl game)... arg hm OK I kinda drifted away from the topic. There can always be something annoying which you didnt expect when you play sc so I always wait as long as the guy says something. If he doesn't I'll do it like chill does and unpause after a while
Your fault. How are you unable to wait a few minutes to take a piss? There's no rule against pausing and if you pause the game and it gets unpaused, you just have to deal with it. If it's an emergency, just leave the game.

I let people pause if they tell me its parents or a spouse, but anything else and I'll unpause. Even that is a courtesy. If somebody's willing to let you pause, go for it. But don't bitch when someone else doesn't want you wasting their time.
And you would seriously sit on the phone for 30+ seconds? Just say "I'm in the restroom I'll call you back in like 5 minutes" and call them when the game is done.

you shouldn't start the game if you're ever going to need to pause. If it's so important that it can't wait, then who cares about the game?

I was having a nice chat with this random bloke on iccup. I paused the game so I can go take a piss and grab another bottle of beer haha

This.
A few times i have been playing and got called by someone or whatever and i dont pause, just leave the game, is not the other guys fault that you have to do something.
Still, i like to be GM so i never unpause, unless the guy makes me wait like 15 minutes, then fuck him, time to win xD.

Basically I was playing a ZvP Destination and opening with a 3 hatch spire -> lurker build and got to 5 bases relatively easy.. at this point the phone rings, I pause and answer it, 3 seconds later he's unpaused and A-moved his dragoon/templar army in lurkers.. I pause, and he does it again... this time I don't notice until like 30 seconds later where my army's wiped out and he's on his to my 4th gas.. I pause once again (lol) and suprise.. he unpauses.
I continue playing but not with any confidence, with my resources now at 2k/2k.. and eventually I lose =(
I don't know what I'm expecting with this blog, I'm just kinda surprised that people go so far as to move up a rank (this win brought him to C-), be it hacking (hacking on iCCup lol wtf) or just simply unpausing. It's pretty irritating when people pause, especially if they don't say what's going on. I'm there to play, not to watch a paused screen. Take care of your business in between games. Mute your phone. I don't unpause right away, but I'll countdown from 5 to 0 really quickly and then unpause. If you can't play all the way through, don't bother starting the game. Think about others, too. Look dude, we all have those moments where SC has to wait.
Have some fricking sympathy. Just wait, you'll be in that exact situation at one point sooner or later and there'll be nothing you can do about it except pause the game.
You'll see.

Right. Think a little bit.

Woah some of you guys are really stingy about pausing. Generally I wait ~3 minutes no matter what, although it helps a lot if he explains what he needs to do. Sometimes I have to pause if I have to answer an important phone call or use the restroom unexpectedly, so I like to return the favor.

Apparently there are a lot more dicks on TL than I previously believed there to be.
Does it really hurt to wait a couple minutes? So obsessed about SC that you can't be KIND and POLITE enough to wait that time?
What the hell is wrong with this generation.

U guys still have phones with wires ? Or cant play with head tilted to left/right shoulder with cellphone between ?
I always leave the game if opponent pauses on the first minutes. I also never unpaused any game, eventho it pisses me off that ppl cant speak on phone / play the sametime...

It's not about personality. If you do a simple cost/benefit analyst it's easy to see why people unpause. It's a ranked server and the guy pauses. If I wait, what do I get? Nothing, besides a few minutes of wasted time. What are the punishments for unpausing? Nothing, it's not against the rules. If I unpause, what do I get? An strategic advantage because I can do something while he is off taking his phone call or whatever and a mental advantage because he gets mad that he has to continue playing the game instead of doing whatever it is. If it's important, then he can just leave the game, there's nothing in it for me to wait and it can be advantageous to unpause.
That being said, I normally wait a minute or so, the only time I've unpaused immediately was in a game where I was about a minute away from winning and the guy pauses on me and didn't even give an explanation, then cursed me out before trying to pause again.

Instead of me thinking how about you read. I covered the second case where someone does call. If it's that important then leave the game, if starcraft is more important to you than your life then just disconnect the phone?

"Quick Divinek, you're mom fell and needs your help now!" - "But I'm in a SC:BW game" "Pause it..." "Nah thats okay, SC > RL, and RL can wait."

Divinek pretty much summed up what I wanted to say. It's at the opponent's discretion that you are able to pause. There is no right to pause though many people will have the time and courtesy to pause for 30 seconds to a few minutes. You make a judgement call. If those ladder points are so important, then keep playing. Otherwise accept that you might lose the game.

I'll wait a couple minutes if he says "just a sec", but I've waited 5 minutes before, asked what is up, and received no answers. After that I just left myself. I don't care about points enough to wait for someone to talk on the phone.
