I'll be a sophomore next year and I can't decide if I should buy a PS3 or not when the price drops.

Right now I got my PSP3000, and my laptop (Starcraft, Counter-Strike) -- assuming it can play Starcraft 2 on low-medium setting when that comes out.

I recently was just introduced to 2D fighters last semester by a friend, and i've logged almost 100 hours on Street Fighter 4 on the 360 at home this summer. However, i can't take this 360 to school as it is not mine.

so i was thinking, if the PS3 price drops this year -- i could pick one up along with BlazBlue (newly released fighter that looks sweet).

On top of that, I'd be sure to buy (eventually):

*Final Fantasy XIII
*Final Fantasy XIII Versus
*Gran Turismo 5
*The Last Guardian
*Metal Gear Solid 4

I'm interested in more games, but those are the definite buys.

Assuming the PS3 drops to $300 or $350, then using the rest of my gift cards that i've saved ($90), it would cost me $400-500 to get a PS3 + a 20 inch LCD to play it on.

This is kind of me just discussing with myself, but if anyone wants to give input it would be very much appreciated.

Questions to ponder:

1.) Is it worth bringing an expensive setup to a college dorm room where it might get damaged or stolen (unlikely, but yeah).

2.) Do I really need to be spending this much money for distractions at school (it wouldn't affect my grades, but it's basically spending money to waste time)

3.) Can I live without a major part of my gaming hobby, and just wait until the summer comes back to catch up on what I've missed?

I can afford it, and I rarely spend money anyways. What I usually spend money on:

Books for school
Clothes
Going out
Alcohol
Occasional game (1-3 a year, usually old cheap ones)
Rare occurence (Blizzcon is setting me back $300 this summer)
Pro-gamer clothing (WeMade shirt and MBC Hero hoodie, w00t!)

Of course, i'll need money to pay off loans when i'm out of school, but lets neglect that for now ^_^

Anything to say? It's a lot of money, but I know I'd play the living hell out of it.

Welcome to the FG club!

I can't help you with the college questions, seeing as how i only went to college for 2 months but for #1 as long as you remember to lock your door and your roomate isn't a nutcase/idiot it should be fine

I had three consoles throughout my time at University and my degree result definitely suffered because of them. Especially because I like to play RPGs and other games that require a significant amount of extended play-time such as survival horror titles. If you have the willpower to study and not just game the day away/skip classes then I'd say go for it. They're a good way to relax and take your mind off of things in moderation/when it's appropriate (aka. not when you have work to do that is important for your studies.)

However, if you suspect you will spend all your time gaming and not studying/going to class then I'd stick with your current set up and wait a while to see how you settle into college before making your mind up about whether you can handle the course work and time aside for gaming plus socialising etc.

Not meaning to offend you, but the 100 hours clocked up on SF4 implies you might get too tempted to spend an equal amount of time over the coming months on something which whilst very enjoyable cannot guarantee you a decent career/way to make money in the future. (Unless you're a top Korean progamer ^_~ )

i got a PS3 while in college and it fucked me up good. its too great a distraction, especially with COD4 online... but yeah consoles are a GREAT time waster.

protip from a recent grad: just get school over with cause once it's done, you're free to play all your games without worrying about failing classes or switching schools or academic probation.
just lurking around...

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

I like to believe I have very good control. I had WoW at college last year and it didn't cause any problems (attempting to sell account right now). I got a B average, but I know I can do better if I was more motivated (which I will be hopefully, as im starting my major next semester -- things get serious, then so do i).

i think a lot of procrastinators will agree with me when i say it's not the distractions that cause a poor work ethic, it's something else -- because if you stripped me of everything fun and put me in a room with nothing but a book to study -- i'd end up staring at the wall.

as for the summer, i work and play games -- so i don't see the 100 hours of SFIV as a bad sign =p

thanks for the response

Get the PS3 bundle that's out on Best Buy, or coming out.I can't remember. It's 80 gig PS3 + MGS4 + KILLZONE 2 for $400 before tax. I would recommend it, even more so if you got a HD TV.

The problem is, I would never put Killzone 2 in my disc drive even if it was given to me for free -- and MGS4 is only $30 by itself. So a price drop is what im waiting for.

FPS on consoles simply isn't my thing. Maybe I'll see how Borderlands turns out, because I have friends with PS3s who may get it -- but that's it for FPS.

thanks for the recommendation though

i can barely find the time to play consoles when i'm at school.. usually it's only like playing 1-3 games of starcraft a night. i don't really touch my gamecube or dreamcast. but then again, my dorm suitemates weren't really into the gamecube/dreamcast games so.. that might have been a factor since i dont' really have one player games lol. would see how it goes now since i'm going into an apartment :o

I had the same problem, but i ended up downloading a couple emulators and playing the zelda series from start to finish. it's 100% free . I'm currently on ocarina of time, i would recommend it, especially if you missed one or two. Definitely the way to go imo if you like good games and can look past 10 year old graphics (seeing as how we're on an SC forum...)

but if you can't and are going to get good use out of the ps3 then go for it, if you can afford it why not? that money isn't doing any good in the bank, you might as well macro
The number of years it takes for the Internet to move past anything is way, way over 9000.

I haven't taken any of these classes(I'm a Biology major) but taking 5 classes is no joke. During the spring semester, my friend took Physics II, Chemistry II, Calculus II, a political science class, and A&P II. He studied alot but still had to drop one class. Now this is a guy who would hate to have a 3.0 for one of his classes.

It's better to wait until you're half-way through your fall semester and then decide if you want to get a PS3 or not.

as a college student with a PS3... I would recommend just waiting til after college to get one (everything will probably be cheaper by then too)

some people at your college will bound to have a PS3/Xbox360/Wii and you can just play theirs and not have to spend money on your own

Unless you have excellent discipline, I recommend against it.

My GPA tanked because I got into StarCraft starting last summer. I spent so much time just watching progames/sleeping/playing instead of studying.

When it came down to studying, I couldn't focus, and I was always tired.

Some of my grades turned out decently, but I also took physics (which is necessary for my computer science major?) calculus and classical logic, among some others.

As someone with over 400 hours on my copy of sf4, I say bring it! And yesyesyesyes get Blazblue, we need more PSN players.

Training mode is a good way to let off steam, especially with MvC2 coming out soon, infinite amount of messing around and learning fun new shit in training mode with that game. Maybe a few online matches. Sessions with local comp more than once per week is bad for studies, though, since those tend to last for hours!

He plays 2d fighters. If you want to see retro, see a guy playing on an arcade stick. I had more "WHOAAA" moments when people came to my dorm than I could count. Especially when people realize it does more than pong.
