Since I work in a downtown area I get all kinds of people in my store, and I see all kinds of unusual stuff (actually its pretty usual since I see it all the time lol), that I don't see anywhere else.
Bums, walking in and asking a bunch of strange questions or talking nonsense. Or just quietly taking all the pamphlets and not responding to anything, then leaving.
Old people and tourists coming in confused as fuck.
People with disabilities, either mental or physical are always a bit of a challenge also. Stutterers, mentally retarded, physically retarded, blind, etc.
Kids, coming in with the poorest selling techniques (someone should teach these kids some of the basics at least) Selling 5$ candy bars for their baseball team or whatever.
I don't mind dealing with them so much, but every so often I get these people who come in and generally look all raggety and dirty. Sometimes they will interrupt everything between you and/or customer and disregard what's going on. They either have a card or some paper and stick it in your face that usually reads: "Hi i am _____ I am deaf and have ____ problem. Please help me/family with ______ by a small donation of ____."
Sometimes they will be selling some cheap trinket or picture for an obscene amount of 'donation'. Anywhere from 5-20$ US.
I just googled around and generally find that these are a scam, and that the 'deaf community' really hates these fuckers for giving them a bad name and implying that deaf people are helpless.
So if you ever see these people, DO NOT feel sorry for them, DO NOT feel obligated to help them, just read their stupid card/paper and shake your head. They are using a sale technique by invoking your sympathy. And it's even worse in front of customers because you wanna look good/not look like an asshole in front of customers.
If you have the balls tell these fuckers off when they turn their back to walk out, they most likely are not deaf. If they are deaf (which is really fucking unlikely), no harm done anyways.

I live in Chicago, and ride the CTA daily. Even though panhandling/asking for money is technically illegal on CTA trains. I've had experiences with every kind of scam imaginable.
From African American kids asking for donations for a fake basketball team, to individuals pretending to be homeless for money, and even this.
It's really horrible that they play on peoples sympathy. As much as I feel obligated to help the less fortunate, people who scam using this kind of method really make me angry.

I don't understand why there is such a tightly knit deaf community but not a blind one. I don't know anything about it other than deaf people are usually against cures for deafness or curing babies born deaf because they think deafness is just an alternate lifestyle.
I also know deaf people rioted at some university for deaf people when a hearing president was appointed / elected however it works.
But bums generally just buy drugs. My rule when bums ask me for money for food (very often, there are a lot on High Street, the main street on the East side of Ohio State University) I offer to walk with them to McDonald's to get them a sandwich or something. Sometimes they accept, sometimes not.

Blind people can't find each other.
When a bum asks me for money for food, I give them a quarter. And keep on walking.
Then 30 seconds later I return and ask to burrow a quarter. If they pass the test, and give me my quarter back , I buy them a kilo of blow.

I coulnd't help but just laugh.
Its pretty hard to convey outrage with signs. No matter how fast and forcefully you do them, just not that intimidating.

That reminds me of the time a homeless man asked me for money for the bus, i gave him a bus ticket and he started freaking out at me for 20 minutes. -.-

I love when panhandlers ask me for money on on the CTA. I just repeat the recorded announcement in the exact tone as they play it: "Soliciting on CTA trains is forbidden. Violators will be arrested," or whatever it is. It makes everyone else less uncomfortable about not giving him any money.

pan handling in the US is nothing like true pan handling in asia, where kids with missing limbs (plural), malnourished as fuck, mob tourists asking for money. this wouldn't be nearly as bad if not for the fact that often the limbs are removed on purpose by the pan handling equivalent of a pimp who runs these circles and shit. truly sad :[

Apparently you're never supposed to give children money in Asia or else hoards of kids will come and follow you

happens all the time at Niagra Falls. People are just sitting on the stone ridges, and they show you the sign, you say no, they move on. They never get 1 cent... wonder why they keep trying?

Last week i bought one of those papers that "helps the homeless" for $1. This week i bought another one from the same guy because its only $1.. It was the same fucking paper I read last week on the light rail. It only costs 25 cents to make these shitty papers, why dont they hire a few bums and ask them to write a story for 75 cents and make the paper interesting and actually benefit them. Total bullshit,

Total bullshit, I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, but the papers actually do that. Most of the articles are written by homeless people, or at least the papers they sell out here in San Francisco are.
Also they're usually monthly papers, hence why you got the same paper two weeks in a row Still bullshit sort of, but it's more respectable then some of the scams that others try to pull.

I while back I gave a guy three dollars at the gas station - he said he needed gas or something of that nature - Later that night the same guy knocked on my window at a red light, cracked out asking for more money. He didn't recognize me at all.
Recently however, I saw a guy filling up buckets with water from behind a 7-11 so I bought him a pallete of water bottles and a sandwich. If you really want to help, buying what they actually need is the best policy

When I was in Rome a really dirty homeless guy just came and ripped a cigarette out of my fiance's hand and ran away with it. Right in front of the cops Also in Rome but on a separate day, when I went to use some public toilets there was a psycho man in there just walking around jerking his dick and yelling shit at everybody who was in there

As they're leaving, yell out "WATCH OUT" and see if they turn around.
|
i just ignore people when they try this even if they get in my face i can act pretty zoned out (because it doesn't even really have to be an act) they give up after max 3 attempts usually the first though

wow that is so messed up for the real deaf people. i can't believe there are some people that would swoop down so low to get money. =_=

I actually tried that for ~5 minutes to no avail, they are good at it.

How would they read secret instructions and private messages? It's not like they have braille envelopes to send mail to blind people who could decode it.
Think before you post, seriously.

The buckets wouldve worked fine. I'm fairly confident homeless people aren't overly picky about the quality of their water.

haha that reminds me of that month in sandiego and i believe elsewhere too that certain individuals or even pairs were trying to get money for a ride on the bus
basically in my two instances it was a woman and then a woman and a man. They both had the same stories which was....their children are in the car waiting and they have no money to get on a bus to go someplace else. They would say that they need money for them and the kids or whatever you "have". The first time with the woman i was worried and said..well you can always come with me and I can take your kids to wherever (then i thought about how dumb that was hahahaha) she wouldnt accept and kept telling me money was fine. It got really fishy and so i left her there alone with her "KiDS" which i never saw BTW. couple weeks later two couples with same story as that last woman and they had kids too
this time i was like...why did u leave them there? =p
|
I never give a penny to the homeless, the fucking krsna people or these god damn people saying they're disabled in some fashion and that entitles them to my money, or these people that perpetually need just another 50p for the bus, fuck them all.
|
I take certain joy in throwing out all those door to door people and shit. I'm on the main drag too, and we get a ton of them. The only ones I ever really give stuff to are kids for local teams or shit I know is a real, worthy cause. The deaf people are jerkoffs.
The worst are those retard salesmen who peddle cheap ass toys and shit. My favorite was the one guy who ignored me when I told him we weren't interested and to leave and went back to bother everyone else in the office. His shit ended up in the middle of the street.
Oddly enough, I'm more inclined to toss a few bucks towards a homeless person. yeah, they'll prolly get loaded (and sometimes we help and buy beer !) but shit, like I'd do anything different if I was living on a fucking street.

Yea i dont really have a problem with it because it is only a dollar and it helps people somewhat. I read some of the articles and i am still not sure if they are written by homeless people..

Near the Berkeley campus, there's always a group of people, who look like they're 30, asking for donations to help their "high school basketball team." They carry around clipboards and offer it to you when asking for money to make it look more authentic. I took a look at one of the clipboards once and there was like 10 entries with different names and donation amounts varying from $5 to $40... except they're all written in the same ink and the same handwriting XD
That stuff about panhandling in Asia reminds me of Slumdog millionaire. Anyone else seen it? There's some pretty fucked up scenes in there.
