I want this small portion of audio from a video, like just 10 seconds, but I don't know what program to use (the video is in .mp4). I've tried searching, but all they give me is complete audio ripping.

Anyone help please??

use audacity, rip the whole thing, and edit out the part you want.

EDIT: Hmm, looks like audacity doesn't support ripping. Regardless, you can still rip the whole thing and then edit w/ audacity

EDIT EDIT: Goldwave (another free audio editing program) successfully ripped from a wmv video, maybe it'll work w/ .mp4s

What do you use to extract audio? I don't want to use some weird program, any recommended ones?

You have stereo mix right? Why don't you just set recording device to stereo mix and record it with audacity

Yes do it this way. If you set audacity to record stereo mix, it will record whatever is being outputted from your mic out. Just play the part you want and press record

are you sure? what's your audio controller? have you tried showing disabled devices? didn't install sound drivers?

if you use the program I linked to, you can select certain audio to rip.

http://download.cnet.com/AoA-Audio-Extractor/3000-2170_4-10605079.html

"With AoA Audio Extractor, you can extract audio tracks from AVI, MPEG, MPG, DAT, FLV,WMV, MOV, MP4, and 3GP video files and save them as MP3, WAV, and AC3 formats. It can also be used to save any portion of the audio of a video file."

that sucks man. i also have realtek on my desktop which i don't have access to right now and i was too lazy to install the real drivers to test it.

anyway if you are desperate you can download procaster and then set video to really low quality while making audio look like this:

and under desktop check "save video to files" which saves to my videos

it's gonna be a flv.

also what is the secret behind procaster's record "speakers audio" option? :s

it requires command line though :[. it's super simple once you get the hang of it, and EXTREMELY powerful for compressing/decompressing/encoding etc

mkv is just a container. there are programs to extract the mp4 from the other files in it.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVtoolnix this for instance

lol.. I have the tools though.. I use Xilisoft video convertor ultimate, you can convert the mp4 to mp3 (audio parts only), then i can use Digital Audio Editor, then extract the desired part of the mp3.. heh..

You have to do it in two steps -
First download an video/audio converter, and convert your mp4 to a mp3 file.
After that open it up in Audacity and cut out the audio section you want and save it as an mp3 again.

Use super.

Official Site http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html (Read the features on this page and see how impressive it is).

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER (Download here, much faster)

Its the ultimate video/audio converter. Its like the VLC of converters,

Here's the setting to rip audio from ANY video file. (It definitely works for MKV)

+ Show Spoiler +
I use it to:
- Convert videos for ipod
- DVD to avi
- youtube files to ipod
- get audio from video files
- pretty any video conversion

SUPER lets you use ffmpeg, and it uses a GUI.

I always used Winamp with its built in 'sound to file' feature to rip audio from video.

Use VirtualDub (free) if you're still having problems. All you need to do is open a video file in it, make sure under Audio it's "Direct Stream Copy" (should be default anyway) then File -> Save WAV. (Cut the part you want out first obviously)

Don't go MKV. Not a lot of programs support MKV, and MKV is overall just terrible. At times, even VLC has issues with MKV file format.

Daum Pot player plays MKV just fine. Most of the subbed animes are in either mkv or mp4, so I can't do much (.avi has shitty quality)

It's more like: VLC is shit for having issues with MKV, not the format's fault.

VLC is the most comfy one for me though, runs most of the programs and the hotkeys are pretty nice to use.

I would have just used mediacoder for this job. Audio tab: "Copy Audio" Video tab: "uncheck" Time: "Your start time and end time"

For watching videos, use Media Player Classic and nothing else. VLC is old news and doesn't work as well as it did when it came out.

I love MKV file format, but it's only good while you're on the computer. You get to choose the audio streams, choose the sub streams, etc etc. You don't get that with many other containers. But if you're planning on using the video anywhere else, download AllToAvi so you can convert the videos. It lets you choose what audiostream you want, what softsubs you want to turn into hardsubs and it's really easy to use.

Make sure you have CCCP too, of course

I was gonna post about Super but Highways already did. Use it indeed, it is the best program for that by far and is free. Works with any format.

I was also going to recommend SUPER. It's so easy, just drag the file in, set output to an audio format, and hit encode. I use it all the time to rip audio from Youtube.

I think I'd argue MediaCoder is better... But then, I haven't tried Super yet. It's options just look more limited. I'll definitely try it out though :O

Booted it up... Pretty gross. I think I'm sticking with MediaCoder lol.
