A few months ago, a friend and i challenged eachother to a "sleep deprivation challenge" i managed to stay awake for 3 days, 16 hours, 48 minutes. Today we're at it again, with the much higher bet of 300 kuna. (about 60 USD)Right now i'm at just 18 hours, this is the first night =x. The rules are that we cannot use any illegal drugs to keep us awake, also no caffeine pills. Right now i'm working on a huge essay, so it should be easy to stay awake. See you at 9:25 tonight, TL. (I'll be posting every 12 hours)

Man it would take a lot more than 60 bucks to get me to do that. You guys are crazy. I've suffered from insomnia before, not getting any significant sleep for about a week and I've never felt worse in my life. Actually, you couldn't pay me to subject myself to something like that.

On that note, I'm going to sleep. Mmmmmmmm.

I see your week and raise you another week.

And yeah, shit totally sucked. I might have felt worse when I had chicken pox or something, but that was when I was 6 and I don't really remember.

Oddly, I can still deal pretty well with all nighters and low sleep situations to a point. Anything past about 30 hours is just totally not worth it, though.

It would probably take me two days to write a script like that because i fail at scripting.

Also i dont know why i should cheat, i've always wanted to push my body to the limit , i do it all the time weightlifting, running etc. why not do it with not sleeping?

First reason : academics. I hope you have little constraints these weeks.
Second reason : your health, but if that's just an occasional stunt, it may not be that bad.
Third reason : it's stupid and pointless. But I did it myself a few years ago, so maybe I shouldn't say that =p

Because those are good for your health, whereas sleep deprivation is bad?

I'm not too worried about hurting myself, i'm drinking a lot of water and keeping caffeine consumption low (as caffeine was my downfall last time). Also lol posts on an internet forum aren't gonna make me give it up. Anyway not really feeling very tired right now. I doubt staying awake for 4 or 5 days will make me go crazy/ give me heart disease.

hmm i've been without sleep for three days before. Notable obstacles were having a dentist appointment on the 2nd day, and easily getting very very angry at people on 3rd day. You get pretty bad fatigue as well.

My brother can do 3 days with ease though, would make me jealous if i could feel that emotion.

that kind of sleep deprivatioin causes long term affects. It's like drug abuse man. Doing it once probably isnt too bad but more than that is compounding the problem. But it's your life so hope you win the bet

Lol but i "abuse" drugs all the time and i'm healthier than most of my friends. You'd be surprised how amazing it is to work out after a couple of lines of cocaine.

Because its so easy TO work out on a strong stimulant. Also other than saying its "stupid", what is your reasoning for staying up being a bad thing? I've read quite a few reports written by people who stayed up for 7,8,9+ days. They all had an (arguably) good time watching the walls melt and stuff. Thats what i'm trying to do, to see if i have that kind of endurance.

of course its easy but taking stimulants which raise your heartrate and then WORKING OUT is clearly the worst/most dangerous thing you should even do on them. i dont think most peoples idea of a good time is going into early stages of psychosis and being delusional

I stayed up for 6 days straight, but, I would cheat and drink a coke here and there, also I beleive that the caffine boost I gained was insignifficant.. I always wanted to experience a "hallucinagenic" trip without the use of drugs and I found out that depriving yourself of sleep can lead to hallucinations after 5 days or so. So, me and a friend wanted to stay up for that long and write down what we saw(while we were playing sc) and then fall the fuck asleep.

Success! IT WAS HORRIBLE OMG just go to sleep... I never could go to sleep correctly after fucking my sleep pattern up like that. @_@

I did experience hallucinations though, but, not any grand ones or anything. I'd think my mom was in my room sometimes and I could hear her talking to me and everything but, then I'd realize it's 5:00 a.m. in the morning and she's asleep and couldn't possibly be anywhere near me. I'd see lights at the peripherys of my eyes, shadows that didn't belong to some objects, weird light animals that would crawl on the ceiling and some tunnel vision sometimes(and this was before I had tried any drug.. I hadn't even gotten drunk yet. I had no idea what a drug experience was like back then). It wasn't like 'woaaaaah omg awesome' when it was happening though; I was scared as shit when I'd hear my mom calling me and all these strange noises throughout the night. Worst 6 days ever~ XD

sounds... interesting. Then again, i liked my 1400mg DXM trip which a lot of people find overwhelming, so who knows, maybe i'll enjoy "strange light animals crawling on the ceiling" (if i get there)

I also liked my combo 5 tylenol pm/13 DXM tablet trip. I don't know how many mg's but it was horrible and fun at the same time XD I couldn't move but if I did, the world would move with me....

Ahhh! GRAVITY STOPPED *flies up to ceiling*
edit: I also put a chunk of Xanax on the end of a joint and smoked it this one time. It made me see my dead Grandmother and she asked why I didn't cry at her funeral and why I was texting with some 14 year old when I could have been banging 17-18 year olds the entire time.
Neverrrrrrr again... I seal my own coffin too many times XP
edit2: Those strange light animals were like lizards that were different colors honestly... they'd 'spawn' from the corners and run around the ceiling, lighting up my walls with different colors, faint like modem lights, though.

On 1G DPH i saw a giant crystal spider crawl on top of my computer monitor. (the size of a hubcap). So i grabbed my show and went to smash it, and then i realized i was tripping and felt terrible so i went to bed and slept for 12 hours. DPH is 10x harder to stay awake on than... staying awake.

my criticizive friend, people can, and have, gone for weeks without sleep without any harm. Not only that, but people with Fatal Familial Insomnia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_Familial_Insomnia) often go for several months without any REM sleep before they finally die from lack of sleep.

Whose the idiot now?

This is my 12 hour check in :D my friend and i are still going strong, 27 hours and 8 minutes so far.

You are an idiot, you took some obscure disease that has 50 detected cases in all history, a disease you obviously have no clue about but just read 2 lines about people passing 2 months without sleep and think hey risking migraines, hallucinations, not to mention the incredible mood youre gonna be in, etc. for staying awake for 4 days is totally ok for 1 day's worth of work?

You could have at least looked up the guiness and know that the record is 11 days without sleep.

Not only did i read about that disease, but i read about other cases. Believe me, it is difficult to die from lack of rem sleep. After 9-10 days the body starts taking "micro-naps", where you slip into rem sleep, which is what causes the hallucinations. Dont believe me? i'll post sources.

edit: the thing is, with that disease, the people become unable to sleep. Its not like they have some magical tolerance to the effects of not getting deep sleep.

please do some research before calling another person an idiot.
my criticizive friend, people can, and have, gone for weeks without sleep without any harm.

Youre doing this with such confidence because its difficult to die from lack of sleep? Please post the sources because im fucking certain that you start taking micro naps after 2-3 days alone, of course you dont remember any of them, and they may not enter rem stage. But after 9-10 days you start doing so? Believe me, this is not a very studied subject.

What the fuck did you even read your sources?

At the beginning of the 2nd paragraph of your first source, it explicitly says 'First of all, insomnia and sleep deprivation are two different things' When the article's name is 'Can insomnia be fatal?'

Im not even gonna bother with the yahoo answers one.

Your 3rd link is a question with no fucking answers lol.

But i see your point, 60 bucks is fine for almost killing myself.

Seriously i just want to say that if i wasn't 100% sure that staying up 4 or 5 days could kill me, theres no way i would do it. I wouldn't risk my life like that and a bunch of reputable sources all point to about 28 days of zero rem sleep (impossible due to micro naps) or several months to a year of no sleep with micro naps before you die.
the answers to the third source are below the question...

http://www.sleepnet.com/insomnia12/messages/667.html
http://www.sleepnet.com/insomnia12/messages/647.html
http://www.sleepnet.com/insomnia12/messages/640.html

and yes, i'll admit the yahoo answers one is a bit tenuous, but the thing is all of the sources contain the same information, which probably points to the fact that its common knowledge. staying up for a week would not kill me

I think the most I ever stayed up was 2 nights, (probably like 45 hours or so). The morning sun angle is always the hardest for me to deal with, it's so fucking bright it just make everything so surreal and tiring. Meanwhile everyone else is all fresh and peppy.

PS- Why is everyone so negative on this topic. He's gonna be fine, stop being such pussies.

A friend of mine stayed up for about 6 days once just to see what it was like, he would fall asleep in the middle of a sentence and awake a minute later and finish it lol. He began to freak out after a while but there weren't any long term effects so I'm sure you'll be fine after just doing this once or twice, gl.

The longest I've stayed up for is about 60 hours, I played a lot of halo 2 and BW and smoked a large amount of weed then slept for about 9-10 hours and was totally fine.

This is a bit of a bump. Also, the third day is harder then the first two not because of how tired i am (really dont even feel "tired" anymore) but because of the fact that i have no attention span for anything... i went for a bike ride and came back after 2 minutes because it instantly became boring a repetitive. I tired to play iccup and instantly lost my appetite for games the second they started. It took me three tries to write this post. Third day is difficult, apparently after this is gets easier.

Btw, I'm pretty sure staying up for anything less than two weeks doesn't have any permanent effect on your health, you guys are idiots.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Gardner_(record_holder)

He is the current record holder, and he's doing fine today.

Gardner’s name is etched in the records however which started the famous “sleep deprivation” study. Gardner is still alive, seems to be doing fine without any long term health effects from his experiments. He said he did that experiment only that time and didn’t try to repeat it after even for a single night.

Source: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/242559/What_happens_when_you_stay_awake_for_eleven_days_

Even if his record falls, though, Gardner won't lose any sleep over it. In fact, he hasn't pulled an all-nighter since breaking the record, he says, and generally gets about seven hours of sleep a night.

Three days is pretty impressive. I wouldn't last two days nowadays...
Sitting in front of a computer always makes me less sleepy though.

Well, heres a wrap up. At Noon, my friend conceded the contest because he was seeing spiders everywhere. I went straight to sleep and woke up 9 hours later, feeling fine. Stayed up for 71 hours this time through. More than doubled last time. That means that if we ever do this again, i need to stay up for nearly 6 days =x.

By the way, the only hallucination i had was that my ceiling lamp became a spider and seemed to lower itself down on a web. Then i blinked and it was normal.

so because you're "pretty sure" of something, we're idiots?

what about the people who have died from it? did that have an effect on their health?

yeah, we're the idiots.

ghermination just something that came into my head.
though there are probably a lot of options similar to my idea.

You and your friend should buy 2 wow accounts with the invite a friend promo (if its still on).
It means you level faster if you play together. Power level the accounts while you are both awake
together for so long and then sell them and make a couple of hundred bucks in the process.

If any one else has any money making ideas for ghermination and his mate i'd be interested to hear.

All i can say is just No. Theres no way i'd ever even play WoW (soooo boring... i'm trying to stay awake) and not only that, its really hard to sell wow accounts, because Paypal by some wierd bylaw isn't legal/available in croatia.

I stayed up all night last night playing D2 lan with friends after only 5 hours of sleep the previous day.
at 10 am I decided to get a 2 hour combat nap before work. I'm not really tired but my vision is all delayed and I feel like I haven't slept at all, hoping to make it to at least 10pm and get a good nights sleep which will hopefully reset a proper circadian rhythm

slightly off-topic, thanks for the reference to Fatal Familial Insomnia, which was a very interesting thing to learn about, but after reading a little bit about it, it seems that you don't die of lack of sleep; rather you die of parts of your brain being destroyed, which incidentally causes the lack of sleep as well. correct me if I'm wrong.

Whenever I stay up the whole night to study, in the morning I get this feeling that my vision is delayed and start having body balance issues (I won't fall down or anything though). I used to be perfectly fine without sleep, then this started happening a while ago.
