going straight to the point, my cat has been out in the backyard during the day and during nights we would have him inside. this afternoon he just... disappeared. we went through the neighborhood and asked our neighbors and they have not seen him, so how likely would he come back?

anyone have experience with this? if so, how did it go? i miss my cat.

If he left by himself he will return, otherwise he is most likely taken by another animal or possibly person. Also good luck to finding your cat I have a cat myself but I live in an apartment.

My grandma once had a cat (a wild one) that loved her for some reason. Everyday it would be the same thing; the cat would be sitting there waiting for her. One day she decided to take the cat and drop him off somewhere really far. My aunt and her got in the car with the cat and drove him to some place. When they came back, the cat was sitting there waiting for them.

But that only applies to wild cats, I don't know if yours will do the same thing (however, I'm pretty sure it'll come back, cats aint dogs... dumb)

cheers

My cat did that once... and got hit by a car. Most of the time, cats will always find their way home, no matter how far they get unless something outside of their control happens. I hope your cat comes back

If he's outdoors a lot then yes he can and most likely will find his way back home.

the thing is... my backyard is fenced, he has never been outside in the frontyard but has seen it. he probably has seen the house from the outside three times since ive had him for the past year. the place where i live do not have any animal thats big enough (maybe neighbor dogs) that can kill my cat, at least i hope. there are no coyotes or anything either.

i honestly hope no one takes my cat, i really really hope he finds his way home. sharing some pics. hes grown up since the last time i posted pictures of him.

He doesn't have a collar or tag or something with a # to call in case someone finds him?

Hope he comes back.

Is he neutered? Male cats who haven't been fixed have a habit of dissapearing for up to a week at a time when it's mating season, so you shouldn't be too worried. Even if it is neutered, cats do go on some odysseys for a day or two at times, but it's much more rare for the neutered ones than the non-neutered ones.

Another option - are there many high-traffic roads nearby? Your cat could have been hit and killed - lost a cat myself like that 10 years ago.

Anyhow, if he's not been outside your fenced backyard before, chances are he'll be scared and trying to find his way home. Keep a window or something open so he can hop in if he drops by at some point when you're not at home / don't notice him being around.

Did it take a map when it left?
If so odds are pretty good. He may have to ask other cats around for direction otherwise.

Don't worry yet, one of our cats was sometimes missing for a week before he came back. Just try to shout his name, either this evening or tomorrow morning...

Almost definitely can find his way home, even if he hasn't been outside your yard much. He should be able to find his way back with smells and sounds as much as vision.

And yeah, being gone one night isn't really anything to worry about. My cats have do that... maybe regularly is a stretch, but it's not uncommon. I'd say if he isn't home by sometime tomorrow, it's probably time to start worrying a bit.

One of my cats once managed to sneak into a neighbor's house right as they were leaving on vacation. We didn't find her until they got back 6 days later and found her sitting in a window.

thats what i regret. he DOESNT have a collar, thats mainly because we never let him out but its nice for him to soak up the sun and run around and not be a lazy cat that sleeps all day.

yeah hes neutered. if he goes back from the direction that he should be heading there are no highways/little-to-no traffic. if he goes from my frontyard then 2streets down there is a main road that intersects with a highway. ill leave the door open for him if he decides to come back tonight.

thats why I never let my cats be outdoor cats/semi out door cats. Too risky, they have statistically like 3 or four years less on their life span simply because of that.

Cats are demonic creatures...they can be sooo mean. They only look cute.

Yes...I've had a lot of bad experiences with people's cats.

If it's gotten used to living with you (you regularly feed it and take care of it, after all), it'll come back. From what I've experienced, cats are just easily bored and like to drift and wander around. Once he's hungry, he'll come back.

Unless, of course, something outside of his control occurs like others have said.

My cat went missing for a week and a half. We all assumed she was dead until she returned to us with 2 broken legs. Turns out she got trapped in a construction site. I guess that doesn't really make you feel any better, but cats are tougher than you think. It could be gone for a week, it could return by tomorrow.

also my cat went on to live for another 8 years or so.

yeah, like 3 or so haha.

my cat came home safe and sound, my mom opened the door (i told my dad to open it, he didnt) and ducky was sitting near my dad's van and she was telling him to come in and we all frantically chased after him and he ran inside. thank goodness.

Probably not very likely, if he is gone more than 2 days he is probably gone for good. I have lost 2 cats this way. But they CAN find their way back, unlikely though.

I had a cat we only kept inside disappear for a few days and eventually find his way home. It must have been a traumatic experience for him because he never tried to get out the door again.

haha i dont blame the cat. when he came back we gave him food and he runs around in the house, eating and repeatedly doing the same thing, he must be happy and hungry at the same time.

Our cat went missing for over a month - we all assumed she was dead but we had posters and stuff put up anyway and somebody called us and found her :O. Unless your cat got run over or killed by raccoons or something it should be fine

That's why you put a collar on him. It's just as likely that some do-gooder picked him up, thinking it's a stray and took him in. I mean good luck getthing him back and all, but it's really irresponsible to let your cat or any animal out without a collar. If he comes back, get one on him asap. gl

Had a cat get lost in a blizzard for a week. He didn't make his way home on his own, but someone found him (five miles away across a freeway) and brought him to our vet so we got him back. He lost his ears from frostbite though. Looked like a chipmunk after that

and yeah I lost my obese cat one time, was gone for two weeks. It was found by our neighbour like...a week and a half after it went missing, and they kept care of it for a few days. Directly beside us. They didn't realize for four days that the ginger cat they found, was the ginger cat we were looking for.

I would say 50:50 he returns.

I have had many cats over the past decade. Some left and never returned but they were relatively new cats and umm... I don't know why they left.
All the cats I had for a decent period of time know their surroundings well and would return. Cats like to roam and sometimes hide. Judging by your attachment, the cat will return.

I had a cat which I essentially adopted off the streets, who disappeared for 3 months, and no BS, came back on my birthday, best birthday ever.

But hes gone now

Just some q's I'm curious about.

And maybe my cat's shy? If she's outside and i close door , she goes crazy getting back in. hides under bed if anybody knocks on door.

DON'T DO THIS, TRUST ME

You wanna know why you don't wanna put a bell on a cat? Because if you are living in an area with any other large animal that is a predator to the cat in the area (such as a coyote, hell even racoons sometimes), the cat will not be able to hide/run-away/escape. I lost my first cat because of this. We have coyotes in the area and my cat had a collar with a bell and we have come to the conclusion that the cat got eaten because she wasn't able to hide from the coyote because the bell kept jingling.

Please do not put a bell on a cat's collar unless you really want to increase the cat's chance of it getting eaten.

also hearing the bell all day long will make a grown cat go insane... they have a much better sense of hearing then man an how would you feal hearing the noise of the bell all day long? trust me you wont do the cat a favor with it.
only option when you want to use a collar with a bell is to buy one when the cat is still very small so it can get used to it.

i had 4-5 cats in my life. most of them went on trips that sometimes lasted 1 week - back then i lived in a village and there was very much natural space for our cats so forcing them to stay inside never was a option. unfortunatly most of our cats were killed by cars (we have 2 streets ~ 1 mile where cars are allowed to drive quit fast -_-). also one baby cat was killed by a neigbours car when that bitch pulled out....

btw our last cat was poisoned and dragged itself into our backyard to die there (they have a very strong urage to come back home regardless what happens to them unless you dont treat them good is guess). it was a very hot summer and when we found it there it had this disgusting sweet smell .... i still remember how hard my sister ,although an adult woman, was crying when i burried it.. yeah like i said we never got a cat again after that one.

now dont live at home any more and i dont habe the time/space for a cat but honestly i still miss having one.... the trouble they give you sometimes is still very worth it.

sorry for zoning out- back on topic: the chance for a cat to lose one's way is very very small imo (~5%). but i heard when you castrate them they wont feal the urge to do that kind of trips anymore because they become very fat and dont walk that much anymore lol.

ouch. :/ im so sorry to hear that, i know he lost his ears but did he still retain his hearing?

Late reply, sorry. Yeah he could still hear. It was just the tips that came off, hencce the chipmunk look (his ears were round after that). It went nicely with his paralyzed tail and blindness (stuff that happened before we got him). Sweetest cat ever though RIP Boss

Cats are very good at finding their way back home. If nothing wrong happened to him (someone taking him way or getting hit by a car). Then he will always come back.

I even think cats have some kind of sense other than ours to find places. You know, just like recently we found that some animals actually can tell where the magnetic north pole is. Cats must have something weirdo we still didn't find, because their absolutely ninja at getting back home from situations that wouldn't make sense to explain only with our human senses.

Cats are very tough creatures.
My skinny spayed cat got her pelvis broken by a car two months ago but hopefully my father got lucky and managed to find her in a field near the road.

The veterinarian gave some pain killers to the cat and she basicly spend two weeks resting in our house but then she was able to jump on tables and to tumble down the stairs <3

I'm happy for your cat

Good job reading the thread.

I've never had one of my cats run away for more than 48 hours, but once a collared stray cat came to me that was a real cutie. I called his owners and they took a hell of a long time to return the call (and during that time the cat took an 18-hour romp in my neighborhood, I thought he'd left for good but he came back), and when I took him back they told me it was the third time he'd run away, and I saw how the children kept pestering him and the mom was annoying, and I resolved that if he ever came back to me again I'd just keep him. But he didn't

edit: OP, I'm really glad your cat made it back. Cats are family, it's really painful to lose them, especially if you don't know what happened to them.

I've had a few cats 2 of which were solely owned and taken care of by me (not family cat). Both of them were really playful and aggressive, almost like a dog. The first one I had from like (95-96) 5th grade til 7th grade. His name was Buster, a classic grey/black/white tabby. He was fairly muscular and large and got in a lot of fights. He looked like Splinter cause his ear was cut in a fight (which I though was really cool being a TMNT fanatic). Every week he would have new cuts and injuries from street fights. He would just stroll home and request food whenever he felt like it. Definition of Cool Cat. Then one day he stopped strolling in and I would only see him on the street every once in a while. And later found out some lady down the street thought he was a stray and served better food, I guess he adopted her. Shortly there after I moved away. Oh well, I guess he was happier that way.

2nd cat named Chief(y) (which was somewhat of an inside joke cause my friend's dad was from New York and called everyone 'chief' all the time.) He was all black and semi-fluffy. Anyways, He was even more aggressive than buster and didn't have a laid back personality at all. Its like he had ADD, always doing something. He would also come and go as he pleased, and he loved to bother and lay on me while I played D2 and SC (99-01) whenever he came in.

So I had him for about a year and we moved a bit closer to my dad's work. And it took him a bit of adjusting to get used to it. Less than a year later, I moved back down to So. Cal and brought him with me to my gma's house. He slowly just stopped showing up around the house. I think it was due to anxiety from moving around so much and the fact that there was an old cat that owned my grandparents house that he didn't get along with. I ended up having to move back with my dad and he was no where to be found when I took a plane this time. About a year later when I was back down visiting there and I saw a very similar cat. I hopped off my bike and tried to coax him out of the bushes and called his name. He didn't even run when I was like 5 feet away, he just stared at me with a puzzled look. I tried to get a little bit closer and then he ran off. I don't know for sure if it was him or not but I'm pretty sure it was. I assume he adopted some other family as well, I never saw him again.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

VERY COMFORTING SUSIE.

My cat lived in the country and outran coyotes and bears and everything. Cats come back home all the time. He/she was probably just bored, or saw a good looking pussy on the other side of the fence. Don't worry about it.

hah was looking for this x) one of mine learned how jump on the door to open them and tends to do this every time I go take a shower or smoking on my stairs, meows aloud if she can't do it (my mom hates when I smoke in apartment and during night I don't go to balcony as she sleeps in the room the leads to it)... once this little fucker did it and went to the other stairs that lead to the main entrance.
I even went around house to be sure she hadn't left it. And found her on 8th floor, outside a door that would be my apartment's if I wasn't living on 3rd
Probably my voice echoing when I called her lead her there.
She did it again like yesterday, this time on the stairs I smoke on chased her till 7th floor, wt hell she run for, I have no idea.

I guess tattoo or anything else is a must if there is any risk ;P

I know this an old topic, but i just lost my cat and am devastated. She jumped in the back of a truck in my yard and when the guy got home and opened up the cab, she jumped out ...in a hurry. It was dark out and she's been gone now 4 days. The thing is she is around 12-14 kms from her home and a good possibility she may have to go over/under a bridge if she were to make her way home. She is a mouser and loves the birds too and is usually outside 75% of the day. She roams a bit, but usually not far. She is pretty nervous of people she doesn't know. Do you think she has a chance to make it home? I have posters out everywhere and still nothing!!! I am so sad....thinking how scared she must be.[image loading]

My sister had this problem too, he would sneak out the front door or something somehow, and would come back home when it got hungry, or if it rained. It's happened many many times and he's come back every single time. I wouldn't worry too much, give your cat a week or two to come back home.

I've had many cats disappear in my youth... We have a cat now that loves to go outside during the summers, and once disappeared for about 2 days. I walked about 5 miles looking for her, and eventually she showed up at the doorstep at midnight and jumped into my arms.

When I was little my cat disappeared once, we went looking for him and everything but we couldn't find him. On the way home from school one day I saw him in another persons house through their window. It turned out that he had been visiting that house regularly and had gotten in while they had left on a trip. Somehow my mom sorted it out but apparently he'd been there quite a while without food or a litter box... It was lucky I noticed him when I did, there's a chance he could have starved or something.

Anyways, just keep an eye out, you might come across your cat without meaning to. Also there were many times growing up where a cat didn't come home right away but eventually it did, so there's a good chance the cat will come back.

edit: omg, the original post is really old, I didn't notice

A few years ago, probably around a decade now, a cat of my then girlfriend disappeared for 3 weeks. No traces of the cat anywhere despite searching through every single brush and hole in the neighborhood, so after a week everyone assumed that it died by car accident or something. After those 3 weeks it came in through the cat flap full of ticks (literally hundreds of them), but otherwise healthy. Took a few vet visits to get those ticks removed, but a few days later he was fully recovered. To this day no one knows where he went.

If cats are used to going outside, they'll find their way back eventually.

I know it's an old thread but saw a couple of people post 2 months ago. We rescued a cat that was left at home when his owners moved house. He started living in a shed then got put in a shelter. We got him 4 weeks ago and decided to let him out last night. We watched him follow abother cat and that was the last we saw of him. We've put his litter tray outside but not sure if this will help. He's neutered and microchipped. Just wondered if anyone has had a similar situation?

I got a new cat from a shelter that's been neutered and microchipped but I've only had him for 4 days and he suddenly disappeared and I looked everywhere, he's not inside so I looked outside and I can't find him anywhere. He's very friendly and likes to be picked up I have a feeling someone took him inside their house like a neighbor or someone. He's also litter box trained and only eats dried cat food so I'm wondering if he would follow his scent and come back home? He really loved us and we treated him right this whole time. Btw it hasn't even been a day so i know I shouldn't panic yet but I love him so much I just miss him. This is my first time owning a pet so I'm just curious and have too much questions and what ifs. I just wanna know if there's a possibility a new cat like him will ever come back?
