I might feel kind of weird using that thing when there are people all around, but I'm probably too self-conscious.

I'm sure you've thought about getting a cheap mp3 player... but wow 4 hours a day sounds like a ton! Reading imo is the best option for passing so much time so maybe figure out a way to get over the motion sickness.

Well this got derailed quickly. Perhaps I should have just mentioned I was looking to exercise my hands and left out the train bit in order to get more relevant answers.

I guess I'll just get whatever grip thing looks good from the sporting goods store next time I go.

I'm honestly pretty surprised that so many people would be self conscious about using a grip thing on a train. Unless I'm in one of those seats that puts you face to face with someone, I don't think it's a big deal.

As for ideas for what to do on the train, thanks for the ideas. I already have an ipod and I do listen to it sometimes. I do agree that reading is probably the most beneficial thing you can do on such a long commute, I'll look into ways of overcoming motion sickness. I've got a number of books I'd really like to read if I had the time.

Ever try chewing gum to ease your motion sickness? I used to get sick flying but the gum completely erased it after a while and now I don't even need it at all(I pilot occasionally).
Im pretty good at whistling with my hands, especially when Im holding a whistle.

I spend a lot of time on trains (4 hours of commuting a day) so I've got a fair amount of time on my hands. I would much prefer to be reading or doing some work but looking at text on the train gives me a nasty headache in 10 minutes flat. So I was thinking it might be cool to work on my grip so I'm doing something more productive than just sleeping.

As such I was looking around at things like this:

I found quite a few different kinds and brands and was curious if anyone has any preference or tips on which to use and which to avoid.

I have this exact one, I can't remember how much it cost but it was around 3$. Honestly I wouldn't spend more money on such a simple thing unless I was hardcore. Its really easy to do though(I can easily do 100). I usually do them when reading or chatting on bnet or in game lobby before game. I'll do like 50 on the right, flip it around and do 50 again, then I'll flip it around and do a sort of slower wrist curl version until I can't go anymore. Another good one is to extend your arm out and squeeze all the muscles in your arm along with the grip. And the same with the left of course.

What muscles is this supposed to work out exactly anyways? I feel it in the forearm and the upper wrist where there are mostly. Usually I don't quit from fatigue though, its from pain on the grip or just stiff fingers.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

errr I think that makes you a good candidate for a harder model.

as for the op, these are good too:

I have some with a bit different design though, but couldn't find a picture.
