So my best mate and I decided to start going at the gym. We both work till 2-3 o clock and we have an argument at what time its best to go and exercise. My opinion is that we should go eat a healthy food home and 2-3 hours later go to the gym and exercise. That is because I believe after work ur tired and u cant really exercise well enough without eating and feel strong. His opinion is that we should go asap as we finish work go there and exercise and then eat. He say that because in his opinion if he goes home and relax he will not be able to get his butt to go to the gym at around 6 6:30 because he will play starcraft. Also I told him that if we dont eat we will burn muscle which is bad but he doesnt think so and says its better cause we are fat and we will burn fat and also its better for our diet LOL which I heard is total BS just b/c he wants to argue with me. Anyways whats ur opinion on this??

Poll: What time is better to go at the gym?
(Vote): After work without eating
(Vote): Eat and then go after 2-3 hours

so you prefer saving time and dont exercise well enough because u havent eaten and ur strengths are lower?? At least I feel crap when im hungry I cant lift heavy things and I feel tired. But if i have eaten already I feel strong and normal.

PS: MasterRey I won you ZvZ the other day

PS2: How come the poll has 2 different answers than the above posters that said they would go after work :S

eat healthy food at work. Then go to the gym right after.

the more important aspect of food and working out is eating RIGHT after working out. You should eat something, at least like an apple or banana. Then have a good high protein meal/protein shake within 45 minutes of finishing your workout to maximize muscle building potential

edit: 2-3 hours is a long time to wait, what do you consider a healthy meal at home that would take so long to digest before being able to comfortably work out?

Just punch a candy machine and pop out a couple snicker bars.

That helps a lot with the workout.

yeah you should eat something light but with carbs like pasta salad before. Then within 30 minutes of finishing you should be eating a solid meal (protein plz) to promote repair...actually i'd wait for incontrol or jathin to show up for more advice

I go after classes, without eating at home. Saves time =\
I usually eat breakfast (7 am?) then lunch (12/1 pm) and hit the gym at 5 pm. I eat dinner when I get back at about 8 pm.

If you're really going to have trouble getting enough motivation to go and work out if you don't go right after work, then you should probably make sure that you go right after work when you have motivation. Otherwise, you'll just eat and then play starcraft.

I agree that working out immediately after work (presuming you are tired) is bad. You simply won't get as much out of it, especially if you are trying to build muscle.

eating a very light meal "before" (like 1 hour before) is good as long as you take protein after the workout (immediately).

Everyone works out from time to time when they are tired/not in a condition to workout. BUt making THAT the scheduled time to workout is a bad idea.

does eating before working out depend on metabolism? i eat about an hour before i workout. depends on how much you eat i guess.

you need to be eating around 1gram of protein per KG of body mass.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_Value

look at the values of the stuff there, whey protein is needed basically if you wanna take it seriously, other than that eggs/beef/fish are good ideas. If you don't get protein right after ur workout (20 minutes or so i believe) then a lot of the potential for muscle growth is lost

I could do that because I live just 5 minutes away from the gym! plus I need sometime to shower first so ye I guess I can make it in 20 minutes.

Sure it does.. but the general recommendation is 6-8 small meals a day and from personal preference I can tell you that working out with a full stomach sucks. So I just don't risk it.. light meal or not.

Right after work is way better, because you want to avoid eating a big meal before you go to sleep. Bring a snack to eat right before you hit the gym at 5:00, but eat dinner afterwards. This is a much healthier routine.

Actually, the best time to work out is first thing in the morning, but that can be difficult.

It is tough. I know a lot of people don't like to workout late at night but that is when I do it. That way I get home from class, feed myself and have time to relax before going to the gym.

Good protein food is chicken breast, tuna, peanut butter or beef. In that order imo.

But if you can, getting a container of whey protein IS the best thing to do. I usually take in around 60 grams of protein a day.

uh well i prefer saving time, because i don't think its makes that much of a difference.
I don't feel tired when i don't eat. I just mentioned it because you need to eat protein to develop muscles.

btw. i doubt you won me ZvZ....i never play zerg

Kinda depends on what type of work you do. If it's physical I would say eat standard meal, workout after 1-2 hours.

If it isn't, I would say bring a big snack to work, eat it an hour before work is over, and then go work out.

INC you only take in 60g of protein? How tall are you? I would have imagined that you eat much more than that.

Just to let everyone know me and ffswowsucks are going there not to build muscles or anything of the sort, we're just trying to lose some weight and look a bit more solid for the summer when we;re gonna be going about with swiming trunks on ... :p Right now we both got beer bellies and no muscle.
My biggest problem about exercising is that after i start relaxing at home i never wanna go hit the gym. Last time we tried going to the gym we quit after a week or so, that's why i think that instead of going there at like 7pm we can go at 3pm so that we actually continue to go on a regular basis. When i actually have acquired the right ideology and start liking going to the gym and start losing some weight, i might as well go there after a good protein meal in order to build some muscle.
I think the practical solution is the better one atm.
Btw incontrol how did you start going to the gym a lot? Did you like it right of the bat or did it take some time to like it and start going regularly? In other words will we be able to be going there regularly without it looking like a big pain in the ass?

Yeah I've said it before.. the dietary aspect of my training is by far the worst cannot afford all the good food I would need and 60g of protein is "ok" but not great >_<

For a beginner, I just wanna throw this out there:

you are trying to lose some fat and get fit. So don't just do some strength based workout and stop. Make your workout long. Make yourself sweat a TON. Make yourself absolutely exhausted when you are done.

If you do this, and keep doing it for a while, you will grow to love it. I guarrantee it :D

I enjoyed going to gym from day one. It just felt like it was ment for me Do you have proper program to guide your training or do you just bounce around the gym and do what you feel like doing?

I would also suggest to eat a small meal like tuna and rice ~1hr before leaving work and then hitting the gym straight from work. Eating right is important even though you guys just want to lose weight and you won't become bodybuilders just by eating some extra protein

Only 60 grams???? 2x your bodyweight (kg) then take out the kilo infront of the gram (if you weigh 60kg = 120 grams of protein etc) is the recommended amount of protein a day I think, 3x if possible. Some of those crazy people can eat up to 6x.

I used to work out pretty seriously for 3 years couse I wanted to get into the fireman course in the army, and the best result I got, was by working out directly after work.

I feel that you have so much more to give, because your body is kinda "warmed up"
If I went home and ate, chilled for a few hours, it was fucking horrible to work out.. I felt tired and not motivated.

Im sure this differs from person to person, but I stongly reccommend working out right after you're finished at work, then eat loads when you get home.

Edit: Ok, if you wanna lose weight, things might be different, but avoid heavy meals before you sleep..its probably better to work out after eating if youre gonna lose weight when I think about it.

Working out after work is just a lot more convenient, I know it's a lot harder for me to relax when I'm sitting around waiting to go somewhere. I'd just eat a small meal an hour before the gym at work and then eat right after the gym.

Because we are going to go to the same gym I used to go 1 year ago the gym guy told me to do 30-45 minutes of running, then I would hit some lifts then do some push ups, some abs workout and finalize again with 30-45 minutes of running.

That's definitely right. If your goal is losing fat, that's best achieved by cardio workout - simplest thing is running. I recently started hitting the gym myself with a friend that knows his stuff, and helps me out - I just want to wish luck to the both of you

I think you could focus on lifting weights at the gym and do running outside of your gym time because lifting burns calories aswell and running outside is more fun. Could help with your motivation issues. And get more specified program for the lifting. It's easier to follow a program than just bounce around when you are just starting and when you know what you are doing I think you can enjoy it more.
