i think nl50 is doable for a living granted you have a nice excess of money to survive like 30 buyins or something.

tbh if i was in your situation $1k is worthless to you i'd just grind with really thin br management like 10 buyins for nl25 15 for nl50 and 20 for nl100 and not let your ego kill you and put in an insane amount of hours

I think it's more the glorified "free" lifestyle than anything else. Relatively quick/easy to see returns on (compared to traditional jobs that require schooling and lots of invested time working up towards the top), with the mentality that 'anybody can do it', tends to attract the smart-but-lazy crowd looking for an easy and carefree life, but I don't think many know what they're getting into before they do.

if you understand the game, have the mental clarity to keep cool under stress, and have a bankroll - poker can be a great way to make a living. and not that hard if you look at it objectively.

but i have only 1 of those 3 things right now

Generally, doing something useful for society (like a job) will get you money.

Also Poker doesn't "make money". It just moves it around between people but with no added value (maybe you can argue it provides entertainment to people who watch it on tv bu that is all I can think of).
