What is ipred?
Ipred is a Swedish law that allows record companies, movie companies, game companies, program companies (EX. Adobe, EA games, 21st Century fox, Virgin records.)
IPRED makes it legal for them to take our ip-adress and request that our ISP gives them all the information they have on us (ex. Name, adress, phone number and so on)

What happens when they have my name/info?
In som countries theyve sent out letters demanding you pay a sum, about (5000-10000 kr). But in extreme cases, like if youve downloaded and uploaded extremly much then they will probably file a civil suit (Civilmål) against you directly. A Civil suit will cost about 150,000 kr to 300,000 kr according to DN (Dagens nyheter)

Whats a Civil suit?
A Civil suit is when a company or person sues another company or person for money. With other words, you cant be send to jail only be fined(Skadestånd).
*You cant get a public defender (You have to pay for a lawyer)
*If you lose you have to pay for their lawyer to.
*They can demand a house search without you even knowing about it. (They can kick your door in any second looking for evidence)

Random jabber :
Thx for the post. According to aftonbladet.se the swedish internet traffic was reduced alot since IPRED applied.
1-0 IPRED?

Just adding one thing,
if they want to do a search in your apartment for evidence, they must use the police, and if the police is going to do a search they need a warrant, and to get a warrant the sentance of the crime must be more then 2 years in jail.

So, no they cant just barge into your home uninvited just like that.

WRONG Dosent work like that in Sweden...

"Sry to say this but in sweden the police actually dont need a warrant, if a policeman SUSPECTS SERIOUS CRIME they can just go into your home and search it
THOUGH, the sentance for the suspected crime must be jail for them being allowed to do this ! "

This is more for you guys to understand this retarded law and some common deliberations about this law.

Dude, being throttled?....again...who cares.. like many many canadians ....or at least quebecers, i get throttled at max 30k/s for most of the day. its not really an issue when you know you can launch your torrents just before you go to bed, and wake up the next morning with 10+ new GB's.

as far as DPI goes, again...who cares. i dont give a fuck if they know exactly what im DLing, everyone DL's the same stuff. Music, porn , and movies/videos. as long as they let me do it.

I just hope Harper wont be able to pass that bill that would let companies sue people for copyrights infringements. That's really the only issue.

That's the direction it's moving in and you not giving a shit doesn't help By the time a person like you gives a fuck it's too late.

problem is, we (downloaders) can't transform ourselves into activists. We can't complain because infringing copyrights is inherently wrong. What do you wanna do? could it be a little ironic to go to the CRTC and ask them to remove the limit on the speed at which we are stealing copyrighted material? Hey sir, these motherfucking ISPs are throttling me when im trying to.....ooops ..nevermind. To quote you....its not like we're 'getting fucked' right now.

Downloading is one of my passions. it's crazy just to think about the ridiculous amount of super interesting stuff that's out there. BBC documentaries, mentioned earlier, is just one example. Stuff that for the most part, i would have never ever even come close to discovering without the invention of the internet. But its still borderline illegal. And for some particular content, even unethical. Like most people, i still do it because like most people, i just can't help it. I want the stuff so badly, and clicking 3 buttons is so easy.

Honestly, im STUNNED that we're still allowed to do it. Allowed is the word, because the highest form of enforcement that i've witnessed in Canada is random adds on TV saying how downloading//pirating is wrong and how we shouldn't do it. But its essentially nothing more than an awareness campaign. And that's why im stunned. Why is it so hard to just declare illegal downloading ..well...illegal. im stunned that they don't do anything about it. The GVT would be able to collect billions more in corporate taxes with strong music/movie/software industries.

Why they don't do anything about it here...and in most countries, is astonishing to me. There is a high concentration of hardcore jackasses in the legal and governmental line of work and that's probably the reason why nothing concrete is done. They take 9 and a half months to establish law # 422 B version 18D-3 paragraph 14 that says that Napster has to shut down because of some gay ass technicalities. Me? allright, im using Limewire and Soulseek. I'm not complaining about the situation. Im just highlighting its absurdities. I honestly hope the status quo will last...

Not everything we download is illegal and thus needs to be throttled and throttling effects more than just our download speed. The debate goes further when artists willingly put their shit out their to get sampled in hopes of people spreading it virally. There is a thing called the e-commons which is content for all which would still get indiscriminately throttled. Proper evidence hasn't even been supplied for the need to throttle. It's a bad thing. Just the fact our internet blows compared to most other countries and competition is discouraged sucks. Throttling is reducing the services we pay for. Piracy is a problem but cutting the balls of the internet isn't the way to solve it.

Not everyone pirates as well and downloading isn't the only thing throttling effects. In a house with routers and multiple systems just regular internet usage starts to suck. Throw in a PS3 and Xbox for me and my brother with streamed shit downstairs then it just blows. No downloading required.

Government passing laws to catch criminals? The nerve of some people!

They are allowed to check your email, your letters, everything. They don't need to have any evidence that you have been downloaded. Just do what they want to.

Untrue. Part of a different law totally unrelated to IPRED and only directed towards foreign traffic passing through the borders of Sweden (which includes like 90% of Russian foreign communications through internet, most of Finland's communications etc...). Government agencies still have no right to listen in on domestic communications without a warrant.

At the very least you should make an effort to read up on things before posting this biased bullshit.

Wait wait wait wait wait, there is a law that allows government to track IP and sue us for downloading certain things?

You're taking this way to lightly. Seen V for Vendetta? A law that lets the government control the population is just the beginning.
