I just remember progression through each belt is a lot easier in the US than in the "native" martial arts countries since the US ignores the mental aspect of progression pretty much.

Japan is known for having easier black belt examinations. This is just a facet of their mentality. People in areas like the United States view the black belt as much more of an accomplishment, signifying at least some degree of mastery while the Japanese view it as merely the first step in a long journey. Congratulations on your black belt.
