Continued from a previous blog entry (Introduction)...
Let me tell you something you probably already know. School and Starcraft mix much the same way that kittens and parakeets do. Combine them, and one will suffer. I was so addicted to Starcraft during the second semester of my Freshman year of college that I would completely lose track of time, playing late at night, and only realize that it was late when the sun began to rise. I tried to convince myself that I should go to sleep so that I could handle school the next day, but my classes were so terrible that I could hardly stand being there to begin with.
I had an English class that was a writing course. Now, I like to write, but I hated this class. The professor was really cool, and very encouraging, but the material made everyone in the class cry with boredom. I had a Physics class with 100 other kids in this huge hall. The professor was this Asian dude that stood at the front of the class speaking like Ben Stein with his back to us. The only time he ever turned around was at the end of the class. My calculus teacher didn't speak English. I mean, WTF? A teacher at a major university that can hardly even speak the language? That was a big problem. All I thought about all day long was getting to the end of class so I could go home and play Starcraft. That is, unless I just stayed home to begin with.
I lived with my parents and went to Florida Atlantic University, which was local to me. It took about 45 minutes to drive the 5 miles to school in thick I-95 traffic. Since I lived at home, my parents would always try to keep me from playing too much Starcraft. When they came in the room I would just alt-tab the word processor with a half written paper or some other homework. My sister always wanted on the comp to use AOL, and my Dad would wake up at 1 AM to get a snack and yell at me to go to bed. "Okay Dad, I'm almost done with this game and then I'll head to Bed. Sorry." 5 hours later the sun is rising and I'm trying to sneak back to my bedroom without anyone noticing me. It was always hilarious when my parents would think I had woken up early. "Oh, you're up early Jason!" "Just wanted to get a head start on the day Mom. The early bird gets the reav... I mean worm!" =D
Such were the things I had to contest with to get my Starcraft fix. I would replay games in my head all day at school and think about what I could have done differently. My grades suffered badly. I was a computer science major without any computer science classes, and getting bored quickly already. Now with my addiction to Starcraft, I failed badly. After my third semester, FAU asked me to "take a semester off." Thank God.
I had a lot of Starcraft to play, but my family was getting in the way of playing it. I knew I had to do something about it, and when my first credit card came in the mail, It gave me the idea I needed...

I'm glad to see your priorities were in the right order
|
What's your idea? Btw don't overspend your credit card, you'll regret it
|
reavers are caterpillars, not worms *sigh* so obvious!
|
5/5 you're gonna buy a laptop for sc now arn't you? =D
|
Haha I am pretty well in the same situation dude. I am first year, second semester currently (though I don't play as much as you did though I don't think). It's tricky to balance starcraft and school. I find one hour per week during the week (except if I have no homework/just did a big exam/a friday), is my limit. Weekends are a fair bit longer.
What was your idea? I am curious.
|
I think it would've been funny if you wrote "the early mutalisk gets the reaver"
nice story, please continue!

All events in this blog took place 10 years ago, but thanks for the warning! =) I could have used it then.

|
How you overcame the addiction ?
|

Close the blinds, ergo problem solved ... works for me anyways.

He obviously switched to poker.
|
Ooh exciting exciting! Next part please please!!!
|
The early bird gets the reav... I mean worm! This made me think of giant mechanical birds swooping down on unsuspecting reavers.

You parents bitched at you like you were a little kid when you were in college? I feel sorry for you. An adult should be able to sleep or not sleep as he or she chooses.

Well, I was 18, but I wasn't exactly an adult. =)

welcome to my world..
A long time ago the father of a close friend, an old geezer who was 84 years old, a retired physician and mentor, told me over a game of chess (where he was thrashing me), son, you can do medicine and have a woman, you can do medicine and game, you can have a woman and game but soon you will learn you can not have all three, medicine will steal all your time and the game will consume you like a jealous mistress; he beat the crap out of me shortly after on the 64 square board...
Although chess was maybe my first gaming passion I never realized how right he was until I first encountered StarCraft. The only solution really is sleep deprivation but sooner or later, the body gives; it is only a temporary solution : (

Game responsibly, and enjoy the moment while it lasts. After a while of gaming, the quality of the game played (especially Starcraft) just drops through the floor and down through the center of the Earth (see By.Flash and his game schedule during the two days in which he got pwned out of both Starleagues this season). Try cutting it down a bit, I suppose. Things are sweeter when taken in moderation. You won't regret doing well in school, and definitely won't regret playing only two hours of Starcraft a day as opposed to say, eight-ish (which is the gist of what I'm getting from the OP).

Learn to fuckin play!! Just think about what really matters and do it, if sc REALLY matters to you then its the choice, if not just fucking do your work.
|
Seriously? 10 years ago? This reeks of lies, sorry.
|
That's ok cloud. I'm just telling my story. I don't need like, validation or something. =) It's also not an incredibly exciting story, so I'm not sure why you would think it was a lie. If I was going to lie I would probably be selling crack to pay for my internet connection.
@SerpentFlame: I agree. That's probably why I tend to go on streaks. I'll play SC for a year or so, then stop playing much if at all for like 6 - 8 months, rinse, repeat.

- yup the English translation has some minor artistic license, the original comment was in Spanish, and for him there was only one game worth playing, chess, if ur curious his exact words as close as I can remember were probably:
hijo, el ajedrez y la medicina son amantes celosas, podes tener una mujer y dedicarte a la medicina, o dedicarte al ajedrez y la medicina, pero no vas a poder con las tres, tenes que elejir, te lo digo yo que ya la he vivido
I was a 4th year med student, his son was one of my study partners and the guy that got me into high altitude lake diving in the Andes (in the picture where they are eating over an orange table, he is the guy with dark blue shirt and mustache, he graduated as urologist more out of hobby than anything else, he spends most of his time being a diving instuctor/guide in high altitude lake diving).
|
Cool. Is there some particular reason to dive in lakes at high altitude?

- nothing particular but - high altitude lakes and glacier lakes have one of the greatest clearest purest water out there - many never have been explored, so basically ur the first ever down the deep blue - most lakes the journey to get to them is half of the fun sometimes very difficult, it's extreme environments most of the times, hard to get to places - very few people do it, so u almost get to know everyone in the world that is into it, small club feel - to be honest we all do it to get the experience, there is nothing like floating around in the deep blue were the heaven and earth meet - it's dangerous as hell if u don't know what ur doing - it's very cold

Yo, sorry to bump this but my situation is so similar to yours right now except it's a combination of listening to music+chatcrafting on starcraft and surfing the web and it eats up my time like crazy. Recently I got a 50 on my english essay although it wasn't becuz of sc, it was becuz i didn't read the rubric carefully and didn't give her what she wanted. Regardless, I'm lookin to cut back on sc..I know it was ten years ago but u have any advice on what u did to cut back on starcraft? and btw what did u do with ur dam credit card xD!
|
I never actually cut back on Starcraft until I found something useful that took all my time, programming. I was addicted to that too, but it was more socially acceptable than playing video games.
|
I play SC on ICCup from like 12am to 5am like everyday. I can't help it
|
Been there. As long as it isn't hurting other things in your life it's not a big deal. Do you get any sleep Yaqoob?
|
I wish I had the time to make this choice. I've played less than 20 games since december. I spend more time in the computer lab than I do at home.
I spend more time per day doing school work than I do sleeping.
