So a couple weeks ago I got accepted to my first choice school... U of M. I got accepted to their College of Engineering (#9 in the country) Computer Science department. The first thing I was wondering was does anyone know what languages they'll be teaching, I know a lot of people on TL are majoring in CS, so even if you're not attending U of M which languages does your class primarily use? I wanted to get a little head start and hit the ground running. Last year I learned the basics of python, so this summer I was just looking for a language I could start to learn. So whatcha think?

Another thing is, is anyone here currently attending/will be attending U of M? I wanna have some people I can get together with and play some SC next fall.

What I would recommend is going to the school's course requirements site for computer science, then googling the course numbers (say you see CSE 101... do something like "University of Mighigan CSE 101") and you can take a look at past sessions of the course and syllabi, which will tell you the content of the course, and you may be able to see some lecture slides too. The most likely thing they'll start you off with is either python or java.

I applied to their PhD program, still waiting on their response. Congrats on your admission :D

congrats man!

I got accepted to U of M also back in December

I don't know much about their CS program, but you should try what AcrossFiveJulys said and check past syllabi to see an outline of the courses.

At U of M you're first few programming classes will be entirely in C++. If you're comfortable with another language most proffessors wont care as long as theres a free compiler for it available. At the 300+ level you're welcome to use any language you want most of the time, but C++ and Java are almost the only thing present until you start taking specific classes designed to compare different languages.

The only things they're teaching in first year comp sci courses are C++ and java.

You should hope for C++ instead of Java.

yo, I am also a computer science major in michigan. Are you attenting Uo M AA or UofM Flint? AA is a much nicer campus(and smash center of the midwest) but I am going to school in kettering which is located in flint so no SC in AA.

Kettering is a private university and not run by Michigan so the standards could be totally different, but the main CS line of courses uses Java. If you are planning to go into the computer science line of work I recommend 3 areas of study

Java
C# / C++
HTML(or whatever web based shit you want to use)

During highschool I was dual enrolled and took a class in python but besides that never had any exposure to other programing languages. CS101 in freshman year of college was extremely similar and after a week or so I was already carrying friends and hot asian lab partners through the course. If you just read up on python or java and have a general grasp of how programming works I'm sure you will do fine. If anything I would worry about brushing up on your general ed shit for your first couple years of courses. Freshman year is almost always the hardest and if you just spend the week before you go back trying to remember all the old highschool shit in Chem, Physics, Calc, etc you will be good to go.

Don't be nervous or worried about everyone that is a CS major already being a huge nerd and knowing a ton about programming. Of course there will be the 10-20% meganerds who can complete the whole terms coursework in one day but atleast half of the class will be fresh to programming so if you arent a complete moron you should be fine.

Add me on msn if you have any other questions about that shit or if you are gonna be around UofM Flint we could SC it up

diddykong13@hotmail.com - MSN
josh7460 - AIM

edit: I think someone already recommended this but you can look up online (or ask people already through the class) what book you need and get ahold of it before you start class. Only nerds do that though

edit2: lol typed wall of text on bumped post

Hey,

I'm a sophomore CS major at U Michigan-AA too.

For first year students they teach C++ in engr101, and continue teaching C++ in eecs280 (I haven't gotten farther than that)

By the way, where are you living for fall semester? Maybe we could get together and play some SC.
I'm on Bursley this year.

I'm living near the Hill - some buddies and I often get together and play SC via iCCup at the Fishbowl or any other computer lab where it works. I've been considering starting a UM team for CSL but haven't found enough consistent players. Maybe now it's possible though? Last year I met two guys who were pretty good at 2v2, but given that CSL requires members to be *current* students, I don't think they can play anymore. Should be up for casual LAN games, though.

I can't recall how many playing members you need to assemble a CSL team - anyone here actually play SC?

Just popping in to say that you need 4 registered players this season (no more 2v2). Definitely sign up and send me a PM if you have questions . Registration opens Sept 1-11 for coordinators, 12-25 for players.

Hey, Im in Couzens.
I know a guy who will be playing for the Princeton team and he said that the game is arranged like this.
Its best out of 5.
There are 2 1v1 matches and 1 2v2 match.
If the score is 2:2 then an ACE match is played whereby each team chooses their best player and plays a "tiebreaker".
So basically you only need 4 people a team.

I've been moved in for quite a while so unless I'm helping out at some welcome event I'll be up for SC anytime. I think the best way to advertise SC here is to just play in the computer labs - I'll help you guys get iCCup set up there if you need it. Chances are I'm going to be a bit full those days - but hey, feel free to show up to these events! It's all free yo. If you see a roughly 6' Asian guy with glasses... eh, that's probably impossible. If only I had a TL shirt to wear or something.

September 2: North Campus BBQ. 5-9pm at the North Campus DIAG.

September 4: Bubble Tea Bash. 6-9pm in the Chemistry Building Atrium.

Been practicing like mad (by my standards) past few days. I think I played 10 games yesterday, for the first time in my life, and that felt like a little bit too much. Suffice to say, I could *never* be a progamer.

Ok, ill be at the diag then!
Are these events open to anyone including freshmen?
I played AcrossFiveJulys yesterday and he wiped me across the floor.
I simply suck so i am honestly doing this to get better and learn.
Would it be safe to post my number here on TL?

Actually, the events are generally aimed primarily at Freshmen, though of course returning students are welcome too.

I copied the version of iCCup I have onto my IFS space and it runs fine - however, my other UM friends and I have been having trouble joining each other's games.

We don't know exactly what the problem is, but maybe some compsci majors can figure it out. Essentially, whenever person A tries to create a game, person B and person C will not be able to join. Either it will indicate high latency, or "game already started" regardless of whether or not this is actually the case. Then if person B creates a game, person A will be able to join, but person C will not. Then if person C creates a game, both person A and B should be able to join, and so on. It's really weird, and something that seems to be universal to all the computer labs on campus. Same if you try to create LAN as well.

For one on one matches this shouldn't really be a problem since it's not that hard to have one person create, then the other one create and join the second game successfully. Still, it's a hassle so right now another possibility is to get into someone's apartment with good net speed and just play on the wireless there. Last year we played AoE with 8 people at my place so I imagine it would work for SC as well.

Just a heads up. I'm not sure if joining normal iCCup games will be an issue. I don't do it from the computer lab anyway since I am really unaccustomed to those keyboards.

Played a few games with DeathByMonkeys, so far so good. Let's get as much practice as we can, guys! Keep it up~

I'm moving in on the 3rd. Sucks I won't be there for the BBQ
I'm bringing up my TL shirt though, so if you see a stereotypical asian kid wearing a teamliquid shirt, it's probably me

Anyone wanna play a few games? I haven't played seriously for about a year other than a few games here and there on bnet with friends.

I will definitely be at the Bubble Tea event, (and possibly the North Campus BBQ) since my student group is sponsoring it. Maybe I should wear a white T-shirt with "ZERG RUSH KEKEKE" written on it to make myself more obvious. Bunch of other events going on too around the same time - Maize Craze where traditionally there are always free t-shirts and pizza and things that I don't even really know about.

And yeah, I'm still playing when I have time. iCCup season is almost ending folks, get in games with people actually near your level while you can~

well, I chose north campus because im a 1st year computer science graduate student, which means im not going to be heavily involved in the party scene anyway, and plus i would like a short walk to the CSE building

Most Freshmen get put into Bursley anyway, but especially if you're an Engineer...

Hi, just saw this thread now. I'm a third year U-Mich Engineer that would be happy to have some additional practice partners.

I'm moving in this afternoon, and I live off North Campus (Broadway St.). I play Protoss at a D/D+ level and have a basic understanding of the other two races (D-).

Contact info:
AIM: MagicFriendAndro
Email: kschalte@gmail.com
iCCup: BajaBlood

Hopefully I'll see you guys in #fishbowl or in person. My house is pretty much a constant LAN party (we've got like 6 computer majors and 4 other technical majors) and a number of my housemates play SC casually (most are only D- though). I'll see if I can make it to some of these events - no SC shirts though

List updated, since it might be harder to catch on the 3rd page. Right now, we tentatively have two apartments that might be open for LAN parties/practice sessions, one on north and one on central.

Edit: Updated with iCCup links, since we don't have a team page yet.
