The ventilation was very cold, yet it had a cold and isolated feeling from the outside. As you crawl to the left, you feel some presence watching you, or maybe, over you. Your nose runs, more and more, you feel the coldness in the vents. More and more, the vent slowly fades to pitch-black. You hold onto your screwdriver out in front as a cane. The metal clash against the vent and makes a scraping sound.
Clanks of metal could be heard from the lower decks, as well. As you move into the darkness, you notice something ahead of you: light. It was the most faint light you have ever seen in your life, yet, it is light. You continue to crawl towards it and hit your head on the top of the vent. You brush it off and continue to crawl towards the light.
Slowly; the light becomes less faint and enlarges itself, too. You continue to crawl with the screwdriver in front of you, then suddenly you fall.
You fall onto something soft.

No matter what you landed on, you can be sure that whatever left the red liquid in the vent went down the same way.
Since it's pitch black i assume that it's a room with a sealed door.
If something was in there, it would definitely heard you fall.
I'd say you should feel what you landed on first. If it's a human you can probably overtake him in a fight.
If you just landed on some soft bag or something, i say you should be quiet and listen if someone is in there.
If nothing is in there, great! look around for the light switch.
If there is something in there that is nonhuman(i.e something with greater senses, an animal(alien or smth), or something that can see in the dark) i'd say you're pretty much fucked(but it's too early to die now isn't it? :> )
I predict the soft thing is either :
-A bag of sorts
-Dead corpse
If it's a dead corpse, it could possibly be carrying some kind of recording or clues as to what happened aboard the ship(maybe he was a crew member).
I doubt you'll find anything alive in there, and definitely no allies yet. That would just spoil the whole excitement and atmosphere of the story IMO.

the areas where the vent meets the wall have the material of the wall expanding around it, as a sponge would. My guess is that the room is a chamber with padding.
