How can I show them that this is more than just a game, show them that this is a sport! I'm tired of them talking crap about StarCraft seriously.
What would you do?

Unless they are gamers, they will never understand. Close, tightknit families will never accept that games can be sports.

But really I don't think you'll ever be able to convince your family that StarCraft isn't JUST a game. They don't/won't want to believe it. You'll just have to either deal with it or hide it from them.

Whatever, as long as you can keep it a hobby and not let it take over your life, it should be fine.

Don't feel bad because of your family, but again, you probably won't be able to convince them of much about this.

It doesn't matter how serious a match can get, it's still you playing a game. I'm not saying anything bad about Starcraft, I enjoy playing Starcraft as well. I'm just saying that even if you play Starcraft for a living, you're playing a game for a living.

Starcraft, the program, is a game. You buy a 'game' from the store, yes. I also agree that football is a 'game' etc... But that doesn't mean the only way it impacts your life is as a game. I know lots of people through starcraft, I've enjoyed watching videos of people play, observe games, replays etc... Basically, there is a ton more to 'participating' in starcraft than simply playing a game. People criticizing someone simply for 'playing a game' are acting stupid, so my original point about the comments of the OP's family members stands as far as I'm concerned.

I'm tired of them talking crap about StarCraft seriously. What would you do? Why not tell them just to fuck off and leave you alone because you can play whatever you want. If they talk crap about your game just talk crap back. It's not like they'll ever stand, but your best bet of course is to insult their intelligence for not seeing the beauty that is bw.

That will just make them madder at you, although it might bring the point home, that a game is open to whoever calls it a game. I personally try to explain to people that it's a hobby- just as vaild as following football, baseball, hockey, or basketball.

LOL that is so funny it almost made my day. It would have if at school my friend didn't throw and orange 30 feet across the room and peg a ginger in the face. But yeah, you won't get them to understand how amazing SC is unless they are gamers which by the sounds of it they aren't. But yeah, if it's your hobby and people don't like it tell them to fuck off.

Also I once won 40 quid in a tournament (this was before I was old enough to get a job) so I guess that convinced them a bit too. :D Also, my brother only plays UMS. I tell my parents that's like getting a chess board, pieces and timer, then playing doll houses.
