How can I open the eyes of all my friends, family, brother, sister that this is not just a simple and stupid game? Everytime they see me playing they go like "stop playing that little game you twat"

How can I show them that this is more than just a game, show them that this is a sport! I'm tired of them talking crap about StarCraft seriously.

What would you do?

You probably are not going to convince them that it isn't 'just' a game since it's open to interpretation and they seem rather closed-minded about the whole thing. You just need to be embarrassed by how immature and stupid they are being for saying things like that to you for playing a game in your free time (which you use in part to socialize online I assume)

Give up.

Unless they are gamers, they will never understand. Close, tightknit families will never accept that games can be sports.

I think in our society video games are all sort of lumped together. Honest to god, most video games are pretty much a waste of time. StarCraft on the other hand is a different story, and in my incredibly biased opinion it has value in it that allows it to be something that is worth investing time in. Not only can one win money through tournaments through it, but you meet great people through it. Also it is something that many people just enjoy watching, so you create entertainment for others if you decide to go up that path.

But really I don't think you'll ever be able to convince your family that StarCraft isn't JUST a game. They don't/won't want to believe it. You'll just have to either deal with it or hide it from them.

EDIT: Bleh.

Whatever, as long as you can keep it a hobby and not let it take over your life, it should be fine.

I see absolutely no reason to agree with you, and you provide absolutely no justification. If you elaborate then you can at least potentially sidestep some flaming.

Okay. If this is true then you are fine as far as I'm concerned. Don't feel bad because of your family, but again, you probably won't be able to convince them of much about this.

Don't even bother trying. Unless you're good enough that you show them a $5,000 check you just got for winning a tournament or something it'll be pointless.

Anything you play for fun is a game. Football is a game. Basketball is a game. Starcraft is a game. It doesn't matter how serious a match can get, it's still you playing a game. I'm not saying anything bad about Starcraft, I enjoy playing Starcraft as well. I'm just saying that even if you play Starcraft for a living, you're playing a game for a living.

Starcraft, the program, is a game. You buy a 'game' from the store, yes. I also agree that football is a 'game' etc... But that doesn't mean the only way it impacts your life is as a game. I know lots of people through starcraft, I've enjoyed watching videos of people play, observe games, replays etc...

Basically, there is a ton more to 'participating' in starcraft than simply playing a game. People criticizing someone simply for 'playing a game' are acting stupid, so my original point about the comments of the OP's family members stands as far as I'm concerned.

Why not tell them just to fuck off and leave you alone because you can play whatever you want. If they talk crap about your game just talk crap back. It's not like they'll ever stand, but your best bet of course is to insult their intelligence for not seeing the beauty that is bw.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

That will just make them madder at you, although it might bring the point home, that a game is open to whoever calls it a game.

I personally try to explain to people that it's a hobby- just as vaild as following football, baseball, hockey, or basketball.

it is just a game, just like hockey, baseball, soccer, football, basketball etc... are all just a game. people play the game for fun, it is an enjoyable use of time. That is until you realize you could have studied in your spare time and not had a 2.4 GPA in high school, and the only school that accepted you is the one that you didn't want to go to. Then once you get there, since your so accustomed to not studying, you get put on academic probation. And you wonder why the fuck you wasted your time playing this game, when you really could have gotten into routine of actually trying on academics. Where getting a B on iccup seemed like a better idea then getting a B in school.

fuck my life

LOL that is so funny it almost made my day.
It would have if at school my friend didn't throw and orange 30 feet across the room and peg a ginger in the face.
But yeah, you won't get them to understand how amazing SC is unless they are gamers which by the sounds of it they aren't. But yeah, if it's your hobby and people don't like it tell them to fuck off.

My dad really likes Go/Chess so I just tell him it's a similarly complex strategy game but with a larger physical aspect.

Also I once won 40 quid in a tournament (this was before I was old enough to get a job) so I guess that convinced them a bit too. :D

Also, my brother only plays UMS. I tell my parents that's like getting a chess board, pieces and timer, then playing doll houses.
No I'm never serious.
