so i need a 3.5 to stay in school or else i lose my tuition money.
i just took my finals and here's how im doing so far
Humanities: Everybody in this class is getting an A. That's great. Social Sciences: Everybody in this class is getting a B. That's not so great, but I think I have a B+. Mathematics: I had an A going into the final, and the final was pretty easy, but I missed a question that most other people didn't miss. Biology: I had a B+ going into the final (here, B+ is about 75% due to curve) and I think I got 75%. So B+. So right now I have about a 3.6 I think? depending on how my finals go though, if either one of my finals comes out bad I'm fucked.
gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

you guys have quite a curve for biology.

thats because we're retarded/getting completely the fuck owned lol
the average in the class is a 70%. 90% of the kids in this class are premed. If most people got a c-, that's a 1.7. that would absolutely ruin everybody's chances for medical school, and look very bad on the school as a whole. not to mention the class is as tough as shit (yay university of chicago)

I had to get a 6.0 (out of 10) for biology last year to pass high school. (my average was 5.0 and your average needs to be 5.5 or higher or it gets counted as an insufficient, you have a pre-final grade that counts as 1/2 of your final grade and the other half is decided by your final exam grade.) I already had a 2.8 average for chemistry and a 5.0 for german so I was pretty screwed because you're only allowed to pass with 2 insufficient grades. (and only one of them is allowed to be a 4 average)
Naturally I got the 6.0 exactly lol, man one more wrong question and I wouldve been fucked. I also managed to get that 2.8 for chemistry to a 5 average because the finals were pretty easy.
Now Im in university and everything is super easy lol. It's all about motivation I guess.

GPA is a joke.
If I care about something and I try really hard, I get an A. If I don't do anything and the class is not impossible, I get a B. If I don't do anything and the class is impossible, I get a C.
No D's or F's, ever.
My GPA? 3.1
I never do anything, ever.

I don't really understand grading in America. What grade counts as a passing grade and which one as a fail? Like, what would you need to make it to a good university after high school?
In Holland you're basically aiming to get a 5.5 for every course in high school and that's about it. There are 3 different levels of high school though, the 2 lower ones basically stop you from going straight to university after passing high school.

FzeroXx obviously the moral of the story is, if you are FzeroXx, then you never have to try in any class ever in order to pass.
Sounds reasonable. We aren't missing anything.
Caller: I needed 3.2 in college. My first semester was a bit tough for me and I was unsure of my gpa. I ended up like JUST missing the 3.2 and I was pissed until my econ professor fixed a mistake in the final exam scantron and suddenly my grade in econ went from B->A (no plus or minus at my college)
That was the biggest sigh of relief I ever made haha. After that my gpa was fine.

F is obviously failing, while D is technically passing. of course, to get into a good university after high school you can't afford any Cs, or hardly even any Bs. For top tier schools it's a given that you will have a 3.8-4.0 unweighted GPA.
idk how your grading system works but in america: A = 4.0 A- = 3.7 B+ = 3.3 B = 3.0 etc

I will spout my own worries about GPA.
I bombed my Statistics final last night, spent three hours in a room knowing NOTHING. I answered one of seven questions and scribbled three lines for the other questions.
Hopefully I don't fail.

In my defense other people had a hard time but I don't think they screwed up as much as I did

However, the conversation randomly turned towards high school.

This really only applies to like.. top 20 universities. If you get out of high school with a 3.5 or above (honor roll) you get accepted pretty much anywhere. If you're shooting for the stars you need to move it closer and closer to 4.0, and top of the line requires 4.0 with benefits.

Ah
This gives me hope
I forgot that grades aren't just 90% above A
Maybe my mid 80%s are good enough for an A
maybe..

In one or two of my physics classes the average was lower than that on a couple of tests Ancestral XD

But from my friends who are doing civil, mechanical etc., the average scores on some of their physics tests were around there (<55%).
But you teach high school right? Brutal o_O

OIC...
Well, at least with classes like that all you have to do is outperform everyone else.

i think it really depends on the class.

why do all your classes have high/middle school class names?
|
On December 11 2008 12:51 geometryb wrote: why do all your classes have high/middle school class names? Maybe he's just saying the subject instead of "Mathematics 327: Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations." Although sometimes I say the title to people when I want to sound smart, provided it's a long title with big words.
