That's interesting, because with that grade (translated to a Canadian grading system), I would be near the bottom of my class. u, my friend, is canadian.

good to see kdog tryin to walk the way of glory
not everyone has this talent. Talent to have a strong will to compete is one of the most important talents u can possibly have. Shitty talents with specifics are lame. True genius is also the one who sees the difference and does what it takes to achieve a perfect shape. And rock lee and neji isnt the best example, neji worked bout as hard as rock lee did. You actually more of a neji person, since rock li wouldnt be able to break 90% but he would definetely stay at it while busting his ass.

So to OP of soompi girl rant, I can understand her motivation. Reason you can't is b/c you don't have the necessary catalyst. Everybody [who is not a total rotted shit](i think) comes across something they think they have to do. Cooking, music, art, going to korea to play OBN/OGN starleague. I'm sure Idra will be dissapointed if he practice 10+ hr per day, and loses a game to a practice partner. Why do i understand her need to succeed? Cuz 0. scholarship necesity, 1. I want to impress this very beautiful girl, 2. I want to prove that rock lee > neji, 3. I want to be top to be in medschool = become good surgeon = I Don't even know why i really want to go to medschool, jesus. Mainly, I just want a 4.0 to show off? cuz I didn't have in HS? I dunno...

ps - my roomate is exact oppoiste of me. 4,0 HS all throughout, ton of shit going on. Coll - doing shitty as hell.

Hello. I never said I can't understand her motivation; In fact, I understand perfectly her motivation. And regarding my obscene language and profanity - I guess my filthy rant stemmed from the fact that I was just like her, and yet, as of now, I'm in the process of crashing and burning in the cruel sea of academic failure. I know, my blog was really overdone, but when I read that Soompi thread, I just became irrationally furious. Sure, everybody has different standards. Yeah, I understand that. In high school, I freaked out if I got a B+; the white kids were like, "Man fuck you bitch!"

And yes, I'm Asian, so my parents wanted me to go to Harvard/Princeton/Yale and become a famous doctor/lawyer/businessman/CEO/rich guy/not even their son anymore but just a relative who earns a lot of money and we can brag to everybody about. Literally every waking moment of my life was plagued with, "Study!" or "Go to cram school!" or "Read!" or "It's 12 am, READ and DO MATH at the SAME TIME" or... you get the idea.

I came to University with a burning desire for knowledge and success. I worked on my essays like a madman (language major) - 4 hours every day, for 3 weeks. I get back my first essay on Plato and Odysseus which I toiled on until my fingers were cramping from excessive typing, and what is the little number I see? Oh wait, that's not a number, that's a D+! Great. And the Ta's lonely comment: I don't agree with you. Well, that's just fine and dandy, thank you! You don't agree with my argument so you give me a D+. And that's where I began to lose my faith.

If I were to ever randomly run into Soompi girl, I would definitely commiserate with her. Because there was a point in time where I was just like her, stressing about the smallest things, working my ass off for more, more, more. I guess, for me, my rant is like a peculiar parent-child relationship clash, where the parent, upon seeing a quality of himself in his child - a trait which marred his perspective or crippled his morale and motivation - is accosted by unbearable sadness and illogical anger. Because I don't want bad shit to happen to other people, honest. I'm a nice guy...

Hell, that sounded incredibly hypocritical considering I just wrote that incredibly violent, vicious rant.

But anyway. Cheers to Soompi girl - I [painfully] wish her success.

no one has lower than a B-? talk about grade inflation.

the average should be curved to a C/C+ (about 30-40% of students).

An example, for my Biochem midterm, I got 81/100. I'm in the bottom quartile (no inflation) of my class.

I don't want to sound naive, but exams are rare inflated/curved unless the class bombed it (this actually happened one in first year where there was a normal distribution around 50/100), as for final grades, I haven't really looked into it, so I don't want to give a definite, confident answer. However, I have had profs who refuse to curve whether the class if passing with flying colors of failing. They'll just have some explaining to do.

There could be inflation, but I don't think that's the only explanation. Do note that most people in my class have a 90%+ entrance average (many who do still don't get in).
Soli Deo gloria.

that just means your class sucked, not trying to be an ass or anything
your B- would be a C-/C at a decent school

Lol suck up your college life. You know, you just have to see the big picture. The really big picture. It is interesting that you bring up Neji vs Rock Lee. In Konoha, Neji > Rock Lee (and just about everyone else his age) in terms of pure talent; and basically Neji just > Rock Lee, that's just how it is. Even if Kakashi > Neji, one could agree that, adjusted for age, Neji > Kakashi. But you're missing the Itachi! Itachi >>>>>>> Neji. Even if you were the Neji at a school like MIT, there would always be an Itachi somewhere out there, maybe in IIT in India, doing your chem finals for for his weekly quizzes. So what am I getting at? Your standards suck, so you should work on fixing your low grade-->feel like shit issue. If you can't go past that, then you'll either feel like shit your whole life or conveniently compare yourself to only a small sample of people.

What is my GPA? I'm no student. What was my GPA? In High School it was ~2.8, in the first year of shitty state college it was 4.0, and then I saw it. Now I don't have a GPA, much easier. The numbers in paychecks have much less shit in them than the numbers in transcripts. Anyway, I wasn't telling you facts. I was just sharing my constructed reality with everyone, much like you had shared yours. I think that's what this blog is about, isn't it?

As i said all you have worse than them is your focus, your approach toward learning and your damn worrying about things that already passed, your stupid stress helps you NOTHING.

I hope you don't misunderstand me. I don't say genius to make myself feel better about my score. I realize that people score higher b/c they are smarter/luckier/whatever reason. When I say genius, I'm talking about the kid, who like yourself, doesn't attend lecture / pay attention / do HW, but aces the final, with 2400SAT, and in last math series. To me, this is a genius.

True, the kids @ MIT might make the kids I'm talking about look like fools and the geniuses in china/india will make those MIT students look like fools, but until I experience their prowess, all I have to compare with are the people I know.

Einstein was a genius?, but I can't understand how much of one unless I actually talk/work with him.

I want to prove that rock lee > neji,

You can't, even if you for some reason get better grades than them it do not mean that you understand the subject better at all.(Same in reverse by the way)
In the end its your understanding of the subjects which is valuable and not your grades, they correlate a bit but far from 100%.

In Naruto terms this means that even if Rock Lee can lift heavier rocks than Neji it do not mean that Neji can't beat Rock Lee easily in combat. And with this knowledge you should understand that it is useless to try to try to beat them in a rock lifting contest, lifting rocks might be a good exercise but it do not prove much.
(Lifting rocks=Pushing grades if you missed that)

Therefore I myself do not compare my grades, I push them since I think that its a good exercise to try to do so but it do not matter much if I don't ace everything since I know that even if I score low if I am sure that I got the understanding there is no personal reason for me to push for an A just for the A and I therefore stop caring.

And I have been like this through every stage of education and therefore my grades have kept rising the higher I get since understanding gets valued more and more the further you get away from clueless elementary teachers. In the same way since I had the right mindset from the start university was actually a lot easier to me than HS.

Where the hell are you going to school? I'm aware of all of the good canadian unis seeing as im at one, ie ones that require over 90% to get in and no class could have an average of around a B. That's just not how normal distribution works.

most university science/engineering professors write their exams so that the average is anywhere from 50-70% which is why curving is a necessity.

usually in a term we have 3-4 midterms (in science courses). generally people tend to get high score on the 1st one (average somewhere between 80-90%) and the professor uses that as a scale to gauge how difficult he or she needs to make the following exams. usually the rest of the exams + final end up being with a 60-70%.

a lot of my friends in engineering say that their classes' midterm averages fall between 40-60%.

honestly if the lowest quartile is getting an 80% on a midterm your tests are too easy.

(also, for my school the average unweighted GPA of incoming students is ~3.8 and average SAT score is ~2100, so it isn't that the people at my school are dumb.)

I used to be like this, obsessing over grades and being perfect. I was raised to think like this and I definitely had to work to remove this line of thought.

Now, I've convinced myself that my friends are the most important thing in my life and that if I don't have that, no matter what I do in school won't matter at all. I still do stress about grades on tests, but only for some in the few hours after I take them. The time I spend with my friends is the most important time to me (even if I spend 20 hours in a week studying then 1 hour with friends, that one hour is still more important).

I can't live life worrying about grades all the time.
