This is of course, in the mostly American sense. In different countries the left and the right vary a lot based on the dominate political parties. I want to say Germany (not sure) has multiple political parties so it's harder to classify people on this simple linear spectrum Edit: According to the wiki entry, they have bi axial political scales to accommodate multiple parties.
