So Ms Word is nice and all for taking regular notes, but when it comes to Chemistry, with all the subscripts and arrows, and different symbols, it becomes rather ugly if the notes aren't taken by hand. [it works with Ms WORD, but to be pretty, it's really tedious..]

Are there any chemistry typing programs out there?

In Regard to diagrams, I just print my notes with blank spaces and draw the pictures in by hand. Are there any template libraries out there? Ex-boltzman curves/rate of difusion graphs

ChemSketch is okay and free, but I you need to do alot of this stuff, i definatly recommend ChemDraw! It costs quite alot, but maybe you can get it somewhere .

For graphs, I recommend Origin, which also costs alot. GNUPlot comes to mind, too, that's freeware.

For ChemDraw, you might be able to obtain it through your school. Most of these expensive programs have some kind of licensing agreement with educational institutions for 1+ year usage for students, there are even cases where you can get the product for free. Try checking with the school's IT?

Write them in your head, faster and more convenient than both on the computer or with pen'n'paper.

Open Office word processor has a good equation editor

Subscripts should be no problem in Word, you can set it to a button on the tool bar. You need to do the same in Open Office, so subscript-wise the two programs should be the same

As with arrows, it's easy to do in open office. You draw a line using the drawing toolbox, then you click on the line taht you drew, then click on an arrow. I imagine it's about the same in Word (I haven't drawn arrows in Word before, but I can't imagine it to be hard)

Word's equation editor is a bother, but Open Office is a lot faster to use

I don't think any of this helps for what you want, but just throwing this out there

- and just so u don't see my advice as facetious, u can either get a digital tablet that permits digital graphics with a pen for drawings/notes or use ms word and paper on the side, u link text with with a number for each paper note i.e. mixed media ~

I'll ask a cousin who is into that who might know of an opensource gosu program.

lol I kinda have to agree - I always got photocopies from who ever was at the front of the class with neat witting keeping up record furiously..(there is always a couple) - that is of course if the class material couldn't be found in the books

Isis-draw is excellent and free.
Only good for drawing organic structures though

One guy who goes to my lectures has a laptop that he can draw on. Seems quite useful, albeit expensive.

Seriously, for standard M --(NH3)--> M(am) --> MNH2
over and over again type of lectures just use pen and paper, it really is more efficient,

I would suggest just using pen and paper unless you have a tablet or something that can allow you to take notes digitally quickly (unless your prof is slow). I personally use a tablet; I know a classmate who brings a graphics tablet and connects it to his laptop to take Biochem notes.

I don't like to take notes from other people unless I miss that class, I don't want to have to depend on someone else for my notes.
Soli Deo gloria.

I had groups of friends in classes we take turns taking notes for a day. Make copies and keep them in folders. We found it much better to pay attention for the day and have 1 guy take notes to share for further studying. It's also good if your study groups are the same people so if you don't understand a section of the notes the explain what they wrote etc.

I take my notes by hand and then scan them It's easier to store and write the first time, but it's hard to annotate the notes the second time.

I never understood how someone could take notes on their computer, I always have little things I want to write down and shorthand on computers does not work too well lol. I do all my note writing with an old fashioned pen.
