Hmm its been happening to me for some time now... I work all day with my computer (im a computer programmer) and nothing happens. On Saturday, y load up starcraft. 3 hours later my eyes are red as hell and i sometimes get headaches :S

Has anyone experienced that? Any suggestions on how to stop this from happening?

My best guess is that when im playing intense, i don't blink that much.. but thats a guess, since ive never filmed myself playin lol.

Start using Visine. DON'T get the redness kind, just get regular artificial tears for dry eyes.

When your eyes start feeling tired, use the drops and stop looking at the computer screen or anything close for 5 minutes. Just close your eyes or stare at something far away, like outside your window.

Yeah, the guy above me is right. Every now and then, maybe every 20 minutes or so, just take your eyes off the screen and stare at something ~10 feet away for 20 seconds, or close them for a little while. I don't know about the eye drops, I never use them.

You should actually do that refocus thing every 5-10 minutes. I do it subconsciously/instinctively.

Is the computer you use on Sat the same one you use throughout the week? It might just be that the refresh rate is really low. or LCD v CRT.

I find that CRT monitors are better on the eyes that most LCDs.

Those artificial tears and stuff are not meant to be used long term though, I think its bad for you in the long run.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Its anothger computer. That could actually be it. Though the computer on saturdays and the work computer both have LCD monitors.. but maybe it could be the refresh rate or something :O

Whats the normal refresh rate?

optimal refresh rates vary depending on your monitor and your eyes, but generally the higher the rate the less likely it will cause strain

also with the refocusing every 10-20 minutes try to take a break every hour for five minutes or so, it will help heaps

It could be the refresh rate, but it's probably because you're less focused at work. At least for me, when I'm playing sc I need to take like a 5 minute break and do something else between every game. It's possible that you have a low blinking rate and are focused at only one distance for 2.5 hours of sc playing, whereas at work, (at least for me), I'm pretty sure that you're not working for 2.5 or 3 straight hours without getting distracted.

Solution:

1.) Blink often. Your eyes get red because when you're playing a game you tend to stop blinking so as not to miss anything.

2.) Take breaks and look away from the monitor every once in a while.

3.) Don't use the retarded glare intensive monitors (although these are like antiques now)
The beatings will continue until the morale improves.

Although all refresh rates are faster than the human eye, you (or at least I) can sorta catch/feel the rate if I stare at a lower one or use my peripherals. Anything below 70 really fucks my eyes up.
85 is pretty good, although I think the higher the better.

Even these 72 LCD ones at work don't really agree with my eyes all that well.

The above suggestions are pretty good.

I'd suggest that if you're going to play SC for a while, obviously you're not going to stop and look away every 20 minutes or whatever, but you could just take a 3-5 minute break between every game you play. Look at something farther away, stretch out, analyze why you won/lost, etc.
