After all the hype and release of Fallout 3, I decided to read up on the first two games of the series. Needless to say I've been convinced to at least play them through.
I hadn't ever heard of Fallout past a casual mention once or twice, so i've got a couple questions for fans of the series.
1) Is it even possible to buy an actual copy of the game these days? From bestbuy/gamestop that sort of place.
2) Is it necessary or advised to play them in order? Fallout 2 seems to be the better of the two games from what I've read, but would I be lost at all from not playing the first?
3) Will the games run on vista? I've had some crappy experiences trying to get old games to run on newer OS's in the past.
4) Any suggestions as to how to play the game through the first time to get the full experience?
Thanks

doubt it, just download them

I played the 2nd first and it really took away from the experience of playing the 1st, the 2nd was just way more fun and had a somewhat improved interface iirc so if I were you I'd play them in the right order, also there are some spoilers of game 1 in the beginning of game 2 I think.

runs fine on vista

Get plenty of intelligence unless you want retarded dialogue options only, manipulating people is great but it really doesnt matter anything works. I'd pick lockpicking/speech/small guns on the first playthrough but like I said anything works, doctor is also nice for healing yourself etc.

I have the games, if you can't buy them you could DL them. They are very good, but the view is not like in FO3. The view is like in the Diablo games and the combat is turn based. Character creation and stats are more complex than in FO3. I don't know if they will run on vista, they are from '98 and '99. And yes it is recommended to play FO1 and after it FO2 since it continues the story. You should patch the games (especially FO2 it has some nasty bugs, use google to find the patches). If you manage to get over the outdated graphics (and difficulty, they are harder than FO3) you will experience a great game, and you will see what FO3 lacks (I'm not saying FO3 is not good, its great, it just lacks that something). Have fun playing, I strongly recommend it.

Huh? They're EXACTLY the same if I remember it right.

1) Just DL them 2) not really 3) dont know 4) Just play it and discover all by yourself.

Fallout 1 doesn't work on XP, so I'll doubt it runs on Vista either.

For some reason i couldnt overcome the graphics
Anyways i have played them through before, and can recommend them, even though these days i dont like the theme of the world, way too miserable .
And about the character, as someone said, small guns are very noob friendly, intelligence and luck make the game somewhat bigger, speech is needed for the RPG feel, and lockpicking just makes it all less hustling.
However, i would go with more tricky player, that uses throwing, stealing and speech

Just download them, as far as I know the company who made them hardly exists anymore anyway so..... Fallout 1 is generally considered the better, more serious, game among fans of the series. 2 is much bigger though. Both games have loads of mods which add stuff the creators wanted to put into the game but didn't have time for. check out no mutants allowed for that kind of thing. I played both of them on xp, I would asume they run on vista but no idea. um well I would recomend that you tried role playing, the open endedness makes it quite fun, however not everyone is into that kind of stuff so yeah.

Er... the sorta revived Interplay are developing a Fallout MMO through a deal with Bethesda. Bethesda owns the rights to the Fallout IP now if you didn't know/realize it already.

Well, if you don't intend to play through both games multiply times then for a power gaming character that gets the most from both games, I would aim for something like this:
- S: 6 P:6-10 E:4 C:4 I: 8 A:10 L:6 (I don't remember exactly how many points you get to distribute this way, but if you have S, C, I, A and L at the values given, pump Perception). Take Gifted and Small Frame, tag Speech, Lock Pick and Small Guns. Aim for sniping perks, Living Anathomy, Action Boy, Better Criticals. In Fallout 1 you should probably aim for Energy Weapons or Big Guns once you have enough points in the first 3 tagged skills, in Fallout 2 you get enough strong NPCs and Small Guns to manage well. There are certain key values in both games to skills such as Science, Repair, Doctor that you can aim for in order to do better in certain parts of the games, but that is really abusive imho and unneccessary for a first time walkthourgh. If you lack in a certain skill or stat at some points in the game, dont forget to use your temporaly stat boosting items such as Mentats. This should be enough to get you going comfortably.

I guess this is a reply to KlaCkoN, when I first read it I thought it was directed at my post

there is a patch to make Fallout 1/2 work with xp/vista, I have both of them and I'm running vista 64

It probably goes without saying, but make sure to download the latest patch for the game before playing. Fallout 2 especially is really buggy. IIRC there is an unofficial patch that fixes a lot of things that the official patch missed.

I loved fallout 1. I thought fallout 2 was okay in the beginning, but into the game, my car got destroyed because I parked it in the wrong place or something. And that just turned me off to the game. I only used 1 save slot, silly me.

Sure you can download them from original developer Interplay or gog.com as humblegar mentioned, for those interested in Fallout series, there will be Fallout online coming, developed by Interplay.
