I'm not a photographer but a friend of mine who is said that you shop around what you know. spend 10k and get something that you won't take advantage of... anyway it's your call. | ||

Good websites for camera reviews: www.dpreview.com www.cameralabs.com I guess you have to work out your budget. I personally looked at the mid-range DSLR's, though the entry level is probably satisfactory if you're just starting out. I won't be able to tell you much about the entry level cameras. Nikon and Canon for me were the most obvious choices. I never really looked at the Sony and the Pentax range too much - and I don't really know why. In terms of mid-range DSLR's, of the models I was looking at getting- Canon 40D and 50D Nikon D300 and D700 The latest Nikon's in the mid-range were pricier than the Canon's. The review for the D300 and D700 were very good in terms of everything but the price. I don't think you'd go wrong with either brand anyway... Also, don't forget that you'll probably want to buy a better lens - the kit lens sometimes leave a lot to be desired. Good luck. Remember that I actually have no experience with either because I ended up getting the new macbook pro and a ps3 :D | ||

It was really designed to go head to head with the XSi but right now Amazon's got the A300 + 2 lens kit for the same price as XSi + 1 lens. Both cameras are newer generation than XTi/D40/D60. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/AA350/AA350A.HTM It's identical to the A350 except lower megapixel. | ||

(I read a report in a professional Photography magazine, also I understood from it that the Nikon D40x, as well as the D40 aren't superior technically speaking than the 400 D. Only the D80 is, but just slightly) | ||

For what you're seeking, one of the EOS dslrs from Canon seems appropriate (in chronological/also by price and quality order: 350 D, 400 D and 450 D). Out of these, the EOS 450D is the best. Or you could choose one of the Nikon cameras, the D40, D40x or the D80 (recently the D90 has been launched). The D80 is avery popular camera, and it has a good price/quality scale. Knowing that you're of course looking for a beginner's DSLR, you could also consider one of the alternatives: Olympus E-410 or the E-420, the Sony Alpha 100 or the Alpha 200, or perhaps the Pentax K100 or K200 (one of them is too expensive for it's quality imo, forgot which one exactly.) Out of these all these cameras, the Canon EOS 450D and the Nkon D80/Nikon D90 are by far the best of their kind, with the EOS 400 D coming in close. | ||

EOS 450D = XSi 400D = XTi 350D = XT Profesionals mostly use Canon/Nikon but all of these are entry level DSLRs and all the companies do a comparable job at the $600~ level. I'd go into a Ritz or whatever and find what's most usable to you since the shot quality isn't going to vary significantly at regular ranges. If it were a 1k budget I'd probably get a D80. | ||
