So halloween is tomorrow and 3 friends including me have planned a funny prank on the other peeps XDD
We are planning to have a campfire and just chill out in the cold, chatting, eating snacks, etc. But us 3 decided to dress ourselves as zombies, dig up 3 small holes near the camping spot where we can get in, and cover ourselves with the dirt.
At the appropriate moment we will come out of the ground making undead noises and film the campers' reactions!
To be honest, I don't need help on digging up the holes as we already did (not too deep, can fit if crouched) but my real question is HOW can we cover ourselves with the dirt and make it look as normal ground while not suffocating to death XD
Also, how can I make this prank scarier? If you got any ideas, feel free to share!

Just dig the holes shallow and lie down, then place a blanket over you and cover that in turn with dirt. Leave a hole for your face, but loosely cover that with leaves+twigs (don't forget to add leaves/twigs over the rest of the dirt for realism).

You should probably use something along the lines of planks of wood to cover the top of the hole so that there are gap from which you can breathe. But I mean, how close do you intend to be to the campfire? If it's cold and at night and dark you probably don't need to be too elaborate, people will be staying close to the fire and won't be able to see anything (combo of darkness + if they look at the campfire it will make it even more difficult to see things in the dark).
That fire idea WOULD be intense as fuck but really hard to pull off I think, lol. Imagine busting up outta the fire as a zombie and then catching on fire and screaming and running around. Would be hilarious but also not very fun for the zombie-person.
And make sure nobody there has a gun or anything like that, cause when you do really elaborate pranks you should always make sure nobody is gonna panic and hurt you

edit: Azrael1111 that is a good idea, didnt think of that.
also, we're going to be actually pretty far from the fire as it is going to be a BIG one, the holes are situated near the fire, thats why im trying to cover them up well to avoid suspicion XD

Breathing straw. They won't notice if it's dark. Hope they don't step on the straws though.

How are you going to coordinate your getting out of the holes? I am rather certain that if you hide yourselves well you aren't going to be able to hear much, and if one of you yells 'alright, let's go' it will spoil the surprise. Also, maybe pm jaysonx for tips.

I'd probably go with Azrael's idea of leaving a hole for the face and covering it loosely with leaves and stuff.
Also be wary of any of the campers having any weapons and getting horribly freaked out. My friend always brings a machete camping in case of bears or...zombies.

I suggest getting one person involved who will be sitting at the game fire. When you guys jump out, if the person involved screams really loud, itll scare the rest of them, too. I hate it when I have no idea whats going on and someone randomly screams, because you freak out. Post the video on youtube after? lol

Has to be firm but move out of the way when you push up. A sheet wont work cause it will cover you up.
Thin slabs of wood or bamboo all pressed together might.or Simply 2 boards that touch eachother in the center. You push them up and out of the way from the center when you stand up.
That last one might work.

If you are close to the fire you will probably not be able to fool them about there being people hiding under the ground... if you are far it won't have the same effect... but I guess it could still work.

3 guys goes those holes and 4th guy covers last guy and has cellphone to call you (you have vibrating phone i hope so you have signal to come out). Just turn volume down before going to the hole. Use wood to cover and 4th guy can direct that way to campfire that they aren't going to walk over you guys.
