So on Thursday I'll be moving into my 1st dorm (going to be a freshman at Goergia Tech), and I was wondering if anyone here who has already moved into a dorm has any advice on things to buy for it that they might of forgot (trying to learn from the experienced). The GT freshmen dorms are quite shitty TBH (just a somewhat large room for 2 people, and a shared bathroom for each floor). I'm not trying to get suggestions for somewhat obvious things like "clothes hamper" or "shampoo," but if anyone has forgotten to bring something with them when they moved into a dorm, feel free to share that (even obvious things I guess if it's a good story!).

On a side note, it's fucking hard to move into a dorm. I don't know what to bring (all I can think of really is toiletries, clothes, PC/games stuff, TV, and school supplies and my roommate is bring a mini-fridge). I'm pissed at my friend who moved into his mom's house to go to college. He had it easy, all he had to do was bring every single thing he owned with him, while I have to pick stuff :\ (BTW I know I sound like a baby with that sentence).

Any help/advice/good moving into dorm stories at appreciated!

Food, lots of it. Something along the lines of 300 ramen packs would be nice.

food
water
cellphone charger(it happened)
school supplies
ethernet cord(just in case)
hangers + laundry stuff
like 20 pairs of boxers and shirts
different shoes
computer
clothes(including winter stuff)
some cash
a cup/mug of some sort(or you can "borrow" from the dining commons)
utensils
tissue box
shower stuff
anch

srsly, thats what Taiwanese students dorms on low budget.
(I have seen on Taiwan news)

Bring:
Earphone/Headphone. When you play games or watch a fucking great movie, keep the sound to yourself.
Water boiler or kettle for ramen.

Try to get a microwave if you can. It helps since you can't do a lot of cooking. A fan is pretty important too, depending on the weather conditions and wheather or not you have A/C. (not likely in a dorm room) Also, for me the noise from the fan would help me sleep at night. (drown out other noises) Oh and earplugs too just incase your roommate snores!! (mine did)

I forgot to mention that my roommate is bringing a microwave too. Good advice on earplugs, hopefully he doesn't snore.

Since your at GT, this is a definite.

I go to GSU and got quite a few friends at GT I was usually over there every single weekend. They lived on west campus which is slightly better but not really. Woodruff was the specific dorm. We're sophomores this upcoming semester.

Anyway, you pretty much covered everything. Mini-fridge, toiletries, TV, maybe a small couch/foldable. Having a coffee maker or something that can boil water is clutch for when you need ramen or some shit. You do have shared kitchens but they are almost never used. It's also nice to have a microwave, which is why I said the aforementioned kitchens are ' almost never ' used... Some people use that kitchen for the microwave.

Bringing some console games is cool too I guess. If you're bringing a Xbox for xbox live or some shit also bring a router, they block the shit out of your packets at Tech.
Silverware
Shot glasses
I think shower curtains are included but check.

Also at the tech dorms I'm pretty sure its internal temperature control so you basically the school decides how cold/hot it is and you can't do anything about it. Fan would be a good idea. My friend had one of those small mini-fans that clings to his bed and it was the shit whenever he was out and I got to crash in it.

Edit: Breakfast is the bomb at Tech, but otherwise you might get sick of the shit they have. Weekends they have breakfast till 3 so whenever I'd go over my friends and I would dominate that shit lol.

Yeah I didn't think of a fan, I have one at my house so I'll totally bring that (other things mentioned I'm already bringing).

I'm not sure about how much food I can/should bring into my dorm, I have an unlimited food plan for all dining halls on campus (I think there are 3 different ones), so I'm probably not going to eat too much at my dorm (except of course late at night). I guess I'll just have to wait and see what it's like.

I have TONS of friends going to GaTech, are you from the Atlanta area? xD

I'm going to Emory in a few days as a freshmen. Basically, I have my computers and appliances, bed stuff, a mini fridge, shower stuff, clothes, probably a electric water boiler, and lots of food and water.

Aspirin, loads of it for the freshers week. Notebook/PC with starcraft, pot (loads of it to make friends faster). A Suit, casual wear, smart college wear, basic sports shirt, shorts, Michael Jordan trainers.

Oh and money, as much as you can get, have a decent reserve.

And ofc pipe for the pot!

If it wasn't already said make sure you know the exact policy of your dorm on items for cooking/cleaning/cooling etc. Sometimes it's a simple matter of finding out from other students which rules will actually be enforced, but be careful. You might want to over-pack and then plan a way to take away things that you don't need. It takes about a month to realize you don't need some large electrical unit you thought you did etc imo.

I know it sounds stupid, but the one thing I absolutely forgot when I first went to college was a garbage can. They are important--letting garbage collect is incredibly detrimental and inversely affects the amount of women you pick up. As a funny aside, my buddy Ryan--who happens to live in the same house as me some five years later now--used the box from the TV his parents bought him when he came to school as a garbage can. The thing was huge (like a 40" tv or so). Anyway, of course it took forever to fill the thing. Like three weeks+ after he started using it, you could see little fruit flies and shit coming up out of it whenever it was disturbed. That was one of the most disgusting things I saw during my first year. We had a hell of a time getting it down to the dumpster, as it weighed a substantial amount...

if you don't have air conditioning, bring 2 or more fans. 1 fan simply won't cut it when your balls are sweating so much you feel like you're pissing your pants

What dorm? I was in Smith in 01-02 and then in the Eighth St. apartments for 02-05.

bring trashbags or wastebasket bags, if they dont provide these its a pain bringing those damn trash bins all the way to the trash can. also its more sanitary!

bring febreeze, if your room smells like crap girls wont want to stay in their long.

also have a TV, so visitors have something to look at.

I'm guessing you've thought of these, but don't forget your wires and cables. (internet, coax, etc). My freshman year, I forgot to bring a coax cable, and every campus area store was sold out. Luckily my parents were still there, so we could drive a little further away to get one (about 20-25 minutes off campus to find a store that still had cables...)

Also, hangars might be useful. My dorm didn't come with them, and my roommate had to borrow some of mine because he didn't bring enough. As said before, shower shoes are a good investment. Trashcan/liners are a must. Liners especially if you're dorm provides a trashcan because you don't want to have to clean your trashcan at the end of the school year.
