Hey. I've been playing bass for about 8 months now and I'm getting into funk. I listen to and play heavy metal however the bass lines are quite similar. So good songs would be like RHCP and stuff like that.

Funk songs I know

-Dani California
-Can't stop
-Feel Good Inc.
- Clint Eastwood

Thank you everyone and GG GL HF

funk is the shit, string cheese incident is a jam band that plays a lot of funk but also a lot of rock and bluegrass so i guess thats not a great place to start, also funk connection is pretty cool 80's funk... Galactic is also a cool band that plays kind of a rap/funk mix kinda thing idk.. ill just go through my favorites and post all the funk i have in there..

(found this by accident looking for another song, still cool tho lol)

(dunno if thats funk, but i think it is..)

damn thats a lot, i forget what i even put in there im a little drunk, i hope theres some good shit you were looking for. RHCP isnt really funk btw, esp dani california (maybe some of their other shit like give it away now is way more funky, but come on dani california's like college rock if anything.)

look into afrobeat.

it's a funk / jazz / african high life hybrid.

i recommend starting with Fela Kuti, as he's pretty much credited as the founder of afrobeat.

and for straight funk, obviously anything by Parliament and Funkadelic. Bootsy Collins' solo stuff is also extremely funky.

No Mystery (album) by Return to Forever - funky jazz-rock sorta stuff

try stuff by stanley clarke (return to forever, solo stuff), victor wooten(flecktones), gary willis(tribal tech), jaco pastorious (weather report), anthony jackson (did some work with al di meola)

I'm not sure how relevant this is for you, but this is all I can think of when I think of the word funk right now.

+ Show Spoiler [Suggestions] +
RHCP is the only band I know very well that has a strong bass line that is not electronically produced, so here's some more of their stuff that sounds kinda funky:

RHCP - 21st Century
RHCP - Hump de Bump
RHCP - Warlocks
Think. :)

stan, vic wooten, jaco, richard bona and all those cats are good but they're as much jazzy as funky, and that can be a bit intimidating for someone who's still starting out. the music you've mentioned is good stuff but once you dig in you'll find it's not really funk

if you're interested in straight accessible funk I would start with licks from the meters and sly & the family stone. just steal a vamp off some tune you like from one of them, get the feel for the groove, and then play it over a metronome. once you can play it in time and accurately, start moving it up and down the neck, changing keys and octaves as you please to get a feel for it. obviously no need to do this if you're just playing for fun but if you want to pick up the pace that'll help

since you're an rhcp fan I'd also suggest you check out their second album freaky styley, it was produced by george clinton of pfunk fame and is for all intents and purposes a straight funk album. if you get a strong handle on those types of funk and feel you wanna step it up or try something a little more demanding you can start working on some of those crazy fuckin 16th note grooves that rocco prestia lays down in tower of power, or maybe start with "come on, come over" off of jaco's solo debut.

whatever you ultimately do, have fun and keep the groove in the pocket.

on a parting note, I leave you all with larry graham in a ridiculous 70's get-up thumping like only the father of slap could:

move over rover, let jimi take over

Thanks alot everyone this is reall incredible. I didn't even know this much funk existed.Larry Graham and most Flea lines are CRAZY! xD

Steel- I really like a couple of thos songs yet I couldn't find any tabs for them

(Cause I'm not a musician I can't read standard notation.

well thats not a drama, theres probably plenty of sites that teach you for free (how to read notation)

imo u should learn it, makes it easier when you are constructing chords or scaling over chords and such

i found this site through google, http://www.wikihow.com/Read-Music , might be helpful to u
