Ok, I know there's been tonnes of threads on RPGs, so I thought I'd just blog it. People recommend me some from the PS1 era and before! I've gone obsessed with putting games on my PSP and soon I should hopefully be getting a 4gb memory stick and so I'll just stick like 5-10 RPGs and I'm happy.

Ideas I've got so far are:
Xenogears
Suikoden 2
Earthbound

I'm not in the mood for FF at the moment as I played them to death on my PS1.

I wasn't a big fan of Earthbound (stopped playing halfway through). Xenogears was great except for how slowly the text scrolled. Haven't played Suikoden 2 but I hear it's very good.

Chrono Cross / Chrono Trigger are great too if you haven't already overplayed those.
I BELIEVE IN CAPITAL LETTER PUNISHMENT!!!!!

I really like the SNES Action-RPG style of Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. People are gay for Terranigma but it's my least favourite. Give it a try regardless.

Lufia 2 is one of my favourites; the story is God awful but the length and mechanics are great. Of course FF4 for nostalgia, FF5 for the job system and FF6 because it's literally the greatest game ever. Crono Trigger is a no brainer. There's some decent Y's RPGs if you've never played them. Faxanadu if you want to play a NES Action-RPG. The Tales Of Phantasia and Tales Of Destiny I think are the two good ones. I've never beaten them thugh.

Hmm what else... FF1 is just classic so I'll throw that on. I still replay it every once in awhile.

Anyways that should tie you over for a bit.

Star Ocean 2. Even after being spoiled by many great SNES and PSX RPG's, this game still blew me away. Get it, play it, love it.
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't Park Yeong Min - CJ fighting!

ToE I think is called ToD2 in the states iirc.
which is confusing b/c there is a proper ToD2 for the ps2, which I guess is called ToD3 for the states...

I personally loved the plot/music for SaGa Frontier 2 but a lot of pple hate the game as well.

And yea Star Ocean 2 is great.
I have the ultra buggy original version of Star Ocean 3 btw lolol oh god it's soooo badddddd.

Chrono Cross I personally hated but a lot of pple liked it.

man it's been soooooooooooooooooooooo long since I played rpg's properly I dont even remember them anymore . Havent really played any sine HS, so that's like a 5 year hiatus.

Shameless link to own blog for RPG reviews (some is PS2 though and I need to get back to adding entries)

From the era you're talking about...
Best traditional style, turn-based combat, etc.:
Breath of Fire 3 -- solid game all around, characters are quite different, nice skill system, awesome dragon system, etc....BoF4 is pretty much the same but a little less polished

Best turn-based battle system:
Grandia 1 -- everything other than awesome strategic battles is kind of meh though

Best action-battle RPG:
Seiken Densetsu 3 -- (see blog); Star Ocean 2 and Tales of Phantasia of different style, also really good, awesome music especially with ToP

Best action/puzzle adventure pseudo-RPG:
Alundra (better than Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma, which are pretty good) -- action is not amazing, but it's decent, puzzles are great, and plot is surprisingly good

Best puzzles in a traditional RPG:
Lufia 2 -- hands down (see blog)

Best TRPG:
Tactics Ogre -- the king! (see my blog, don't be fooled by FFT)

Best plot, director work:
Vagrant Story -- in the paraphrased words of the creator, the art film to FF's summer blockbuster

Best character design:
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete -- last Lunar 1 remake features nice light-hearted plot, pretty good battles, no random encounters, generally a solid game; has a really snappy translation

Game that takes its plot seriously with large plot focus (with varying degrees of success):
Xenogears -- lol they really didn't copy NGE?; dungeons, music, graphics, battles all decent but not special

Best overall RPG:
Valkyrie Profile -- its port to PSP is called Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth so you don't have to emulate it; groundbreaking battle system, awesome 2D platforming/puzzle dungeon exploration, great plot events (every character you "recruit" is after watching a 2-30 minute cutscene about how they died), awesome soundtrack...edit: okay I admit there's a couple battle skills that are a little broken, but that's the biggest complaint to be had

Suikoden's generally not that interesting unless you're really interested in its war plot and recruiting all those characters. Battles are pretty shallow, as is individual character advancement/customization. Earthbound is a very mediocre, unremarkable RPG other than the fact that the atmosphere is balls-to-the-walls crazy. Unless you really need to experience that firsthand, you can skip that.

edit: Oh yeah I ignored FFs and CT because I've assumed you've played them or at least have already considered them.

I can't belive it hasn't been said yet (unless I missed it in a post) but Secret of mana it's up there with Chrono Trigger and FF6 on my scales. such a good game.
Treasure Hunter G was also pretty cool but my name got deleted like 15 hours in and I never tried replaying it again.

Meh. I thought Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) was about 34 times better in almost every aspect except graphism. SD3 has a lame and extremely predictable scenario, totally useless NPC's (you're a lot better off playing alone than having to feed them sweets and chocolates every 30 seconds) and I hated how the characters were all slowed down in battle phases. :x

Best action/puzzle adventure pseudo-RPG:
Alundra (better than Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma, which are pretty good) -- action is not amazing, but it's decent, puzzles are great, and plot is surprisingly good

imho Landstalker (Genesis) rips it apart. To me it's the best action/adventure/puzzle/platform game ever, hands down, and will probably remain untouched. Only my opinion though.

Xenogears -- lol they really didn't copy NGE?; dungeons, music, graphics, battles all decent but not special

Xenogears is all about the characters and the story. You can feel it was rushed towards the end, but it's still a fucking masterpiece overall and a unique experience.

Suikoden's generally not that interesting unless you're really interested in its war plot and recruiting all those characters. Battles are pretty shallow, as is individual character advancement/customization.

Suikoden 1/2 are among my favorite RPGs personally. They're tons of fun--perfect balance between battles, adventure, dialog, dungeons, everything. I couldn't stop playing them until I saw the end screen, which rarely ever happens to me usually.

If you liked Earthbound, there's a fan translation of Mother 3 coming out in a bit

http://mother3.fobby.net/

I personally loved Earthbound. Was so hooked to that game back in grade school.

Tales of Phantasia - pretty interesting, especially if you get the one that was translated funny
FF6 - best Final Fantasy made
Front Mission - similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. Story is pretty weak but the battles are so much fun.
Secret of Mana - all around fun game. More fun with a friend I think
Secret of Evermore - hilarious dialogue, real time RPG (not turn based)
Illusion of Gaia - fun game but can get frustrating when you can't figure something out
Ogre Battle - I love the idea of deploying units and loosely controlling them.
Xenogears - fun to do combinations in battle and has a good story
Earthbound - pretty goofy story but overall a classic
Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross - both classics of course
Lufia I/II - get a bit old after a while but fun to play around with

I'm definitely a person who gets about halfway into a game and gets bored once it hits a certain spot. For example, once FF6 goes all apocalypse I usually quit. I tend to re-play the beginning of games in cycles. But for all the ones I've never finished, I'd like to soon.

I bought this on ebay for my psp. It didn't came out in America so I had to import the european version. Fortunately it works with us psp

Such nostalgy, I remember playing this game 2-3 times on my ps1 (was Tales of Destiny 2 on the ps1)

Once I'm done with Valkyrie Profile:Lenneth and Final Fantasy Tactics I'll surely import Breath of Fire 3 too, I know europeans have a psp version and not us

Oh yea, if I get games like Arc The Lad 2, Breath of Fire 3 and Star Ocean 2 etc, does it matter that I haven't played the first ones?

I haven't played it personally, but a quick search tells me Arc The Lad 2 is a direct continuation of the original. Breath of Fire is in the same universe as the first two (and arguably the 4th), but there is little connection between the games. There's always a main character called Ryu (not related) with dragon powers, a female lead called Nina usually from a place called Windia (they're not the same place/people between iterations), and in the first 4 there's a minor recurring character called Deis (Bleu). In BoF3 they make an offhand reference to the first game at one point, that's all. Star Ocean 2's main male protagonist is the son of a playable character in the first Star Ocean. You see said playable character (father) in Star Ocean 2 in a minor plot role, but everything else is entirely unrelated other than the universe, which is something of a Star Trek homage.

So it really depends on the series and the game.

Arc the Lad 1 is a pretty short game (especially when compared to Arc the Lad 2) and the plot for the sequel picks up directly after it so I would say that it is worth the time to play it first. I almost think of Arc 1 as just being like a prologue for Arc 2. If you don't want to play Arc 1 first though I would still recommend playing Arc 2 simply because it is such a great game. I wish that they would make more games like it, the freedom to choose what quest to do and when is pretty rare in a jrpg.
It's easier not to.
