hmm, I've thought about this when I learned of a protein called telomerase.

As time goes by, cells die and your body replaces them with newly divided cells. Each time a cell divides, it loses a part at the end of its DNA. Because of this, the end of a human's DNA has a section of blank or useless DNA, the telomere, to be cleaved off bit by bit with each division. Your DNA eventually shortens until it reaches a point where there's no more useless DNA, and the real, functional DNA starts to get cut off. Once this happens all kinds of problems start to accumulate and you die. There's a limit of about 70 divisions for each cell until its DNA is damaged.

Some organisms have an enzyme called telomerase that can rebuild the useless DNA, so cells can keep dividing without having its functional DNA damaged. Still, this doesn't mean that you can't get damaged in other ways. Radiation and other things can damage the DNA in any section. If the cell's DNA is damaged and it doesn't die, it could become a cancer and keep growing.

Suffice to say, you need to be some sort of geneticist with the ability manipulate DNA to find immortality. You'd then have to deal with how to repair and keep the genome healthy for hundreds of years to prevent natural diseases. On top of that, you'd have to worry about the external environment: accidents, pathogens, fast foods.

As for babies, a female person needs to have a baby before she reaches menopause. This mean she has to have a kid in her 20's-50's. Then she, and her kids, will live for hundreds of years after that.

people should die
think about the resources needed if no one dies
death is just a natural thing

well.. unless in the future they modify the gene so that
- people can eat their own shit to live
- people can breath both O2/CO2 to live
- ????

then i'd say it's fine to live forever

Bottom line: before thinking about immortality, try eating shit (it's not funny, read my point above)
do not agrue with idiots, they will pull you down to their level and beat you with their experiences

not even speaking of the psychological aspect.. why get anything done if you got all eternity.

to make a name for yourself, instead of being anonymous. Hell, I can say that I have 80 years, I have time to get an education and I can relax and play SC and watch tv all day. People can still drop dead even with "immortality." All the genetic tweaking won't help you if you get hit by a car.

To your suggestion that people dont try to research stuff like that or faster than light travel: first of all i find the comparison terrible, physicists are mathematicly exploring every possibiltiy they can find which is allowed by the current laws. the reproach that they are not openminded is laughable. the laws we have are deducted form observation and experiment and the often recited claim that old laws become outdated and are replaced by new ones so our current laws could also be wrong is plain bs. laws dont get outdated they get extented or explained as a special case of a more genereal law.forged by experiment they still stay true in their domain. the better the experiments get the more refined the theories get and new facettes are reavealed. like when quantummechanics were revealed. it doesnt contradict the classic view, how could it. if i throw an apple if flies as it does. it just explains how things work on a scale which could not be observed before and the laws of the old realm is neatly deductable.

String theory? The very concept of a theory itself?

Speculations based on the current laws can be wrong of course, the farther they get away from its foundation in experiment. But things that are forbidden in accessable realms stay forbidden no matter, how refined the theories get.
perhabs there could be some loopholes nobody tried to think of, there could also be a way to make horses with a fingersnap but they are just not accessable and to say people dont try to think of them is a very naive statement and a insult to every physicist.
to immortality research. you can imagine the fame and the money it would get you and im sure EVERY scientist in a related field does think about it if he happens to come across an approach and even if he just does so in his bed every evening or so.

I never said people don't think about them, I said that people tend to dismiss things too easily as pipe dreams. Ask most physicists if you can travel faster than light. Most of them will say no. Now lets say there is a way to travel faster than light. Is this dismissive mindset conducive?

i m not quite sure what you mean to say with your reference to string theroy. it does describe all things we can observe ofc. but is very specualtive regarding why that is and many predictions it makes are practicly not testable.
A theory is a simplified image of a part of reality, which is to be described and explained by this image to potentially make predictions or give suggestions how to act based on it.

to your second answer:
if you ask them and they say no, i guess its because thats how it is according to their knowledge and experience. dont see anything wrong with that. even if there would be a yet hidden possibility, it is out of reach therefore there is no faster than light travel for you even though some fancy aliens could have it. In my opinion this is not an dismissive mindset, it just states how things are right now. if anyone finds an approach that allows just the possibility, im sure everyone will explore it with enthusiasm.
i dont think people get physicists because they like to negate.
