I have recently conducted two experiments by using teamliquid. I'm somewhat intrigued by the results, so I'll share them.

Experiment 1: The No Soap Challenge
+ Show Spoiler +

In my recent blog titled Challenge: No soap for one year I claimed that "I am going to go one year without using soap as a personal challenge." My purpose for this was twofold. First, it was a silly response to the numerous 'challenge' threads I've seen here and elsewhere recently. But more importantly, it was to gauge the readership's overall feelings towards current social standard on hygiene (which some other people actually brought up in their responses).

Okay I'll just come out with it. I haven't used soap on my body (other than the exceptions stated in the blog) in 15 years. To all of you who said something like "If you do this you will of a major problem because x..." you were wrong :p . That's not to say that I could get away with it if I had a very close relationship (figuratively and literally) but for someone who leads a fairly clean daily lifestyle, it's quite unnecessary to lather up.

Once again, I just wanted to see how many people were or were not privy to the fact that you actually can do reasonably well without soap/deodorant/etc. If you haven't already done so, I recommend going back and re-reading the replies from the perspective I was looking at it. It's rather amusing.

Experiment 2: Gas Prices From Hell
+ Show Spoiler +

In my recent blog titled Gas Prices Expected to Soar I posted the url to a legit article about rising gas prices, pasted it into a spoiler, and then gave a one line comment. The goal was to see how many people fell into the following categories:

1) Read the article via the link, then responded.
2) Read the article in the spoiler, then responded.
3) Responded without reading the article.

For the people that fell into category 2, they would either:

a) Not notice anything wrong because they are dense and/or not knowledgeable at all on the situation.
b) Discover that it is, to some extent, a complete farce.

Nobody seems to have fallen into category 2b. I'm assuming they fell into category 3, with a few exceptions falling into category 1. It's difficult to quantitatively measure this data, but if you re-read through the replies, you will probably notice it.

Basically, I just wanted to see if anyone would figure it out. If you didn't figure it out yet, re-read the article in the spoilers carefully (this is something I had been planning to do for a while (btw it might help to get WinMerge or something)).

If you are really confused then wait for a few replies as this might make more sense.

Anyway, just was having some fun.

Edit: I'm actually not smelly. It might just be that I'm that way naturally, so I can't promise this will work for other people.

i knew the news article was fake. But I didn't read who gave the one in the spoiler, and thot it was another person with another article designed to make the situation worse. Oh well...

That is a neat little trick you did though.

And yeah, I agree with statix, use some god damn deoderant and use some soap. It's gross and grimey if you dont.

i noticed that alot of asian people dont use deodorant and are okay
however, there are alot of people, especially fat people, who sweat alot and not using deodorant or soap is definitely not okay because their bodies emit a foul odor

I'm sure she's used to your odor by now, especially if you're not the only one in your family who doesn't use soap.

I'm the only one. Also, she didn't notice anything back when I was 8 (but she noticed the moment I hadn't showered at all ._. )

You said,

That's not to say that I could get away with it if I had a very close relationship (figuratively and literally) but for someone who leads a fairly clean daily lifestyle, it's quite unnecessary to lather up.

If there is a need at that point to lather up, you are more or less admitting that there is most likely a faint odor that someone intimate with you could sense. I would say that is good enough reason to shower immediately, for the chance that the faint odor is picked up by someone else, even if it's just in an enclosed space; such as an elevator.

If you aren't willing to accept the above logic, I still disagree with your opinion that you can do fine without soap/deodorant. My reasoning for this is that even if you do not have an unpleasant odor, the fact that some others will be mildly disgusted when they find out is reason enough to conform to washing regularly.

I liken this to when I tried to convince my family to stop giving me cards for special occasions, because I believed that it was unnecessary and I personally don't buy the, 'It shows that you care' excuse. What I found out however is that it means a lot to other people. People like to receive cards and would give me cards anyway to show that they cared. Therefore, I eventually conformed for family harmony.

Okay so you have brought up two unrelated issues.

The first issue is that I'm admitting there is a benefit to using soap/deodorant. It's possible someone will dislike something about me therefore I must do something to prevent it? I think any odor I emit is more dependent on what I've done since I woke up this morning than whether or not I used soap last night.

You should do something because people want you to? Sometimes that is true. You shouldn't always do 100% what you want and not factor in what other people want. But you should also lead an independent lifestyle where you put your beliefs ahead of the illogical expectations of others. This is a balance so there is no right or wrong answer.

My first point was merely stating that you do not deny you most likely have an odor. If you didn't think you did, why would you state that you would most likely clean yourself if you were intimate with someone. Since you were indirectly saying you do have an odor, I was saying there is a chance (imo, a good one) that people will notice. What I was getting at was that you said for your daily lifestyle, it's unnecessary to lather up. What I assumed was that you would care if you smelt. If you don't care if you smell, than I guess it doesn't really matter either way.

Also, I don't see what you getting at with your last sentence; It's entirely dependent. That's how filth is accumulated, you acquire it based on what you do. It isn't possible to stop yourself from becoming dirty, it's in the air. Your thinking would only make sense if by some way, you have stopped your body from becoming dirty, thus you don't need to shower anymore.

Salvatore321 I think if you don't do anything hella dirty, your accumulated filth can be cleaned off simply by showering and using shampoo which runs down your body etc.

Lol.

I'm surprised nobody caught the gas one, even though I wasn't surprised nobody realized I was joking about the 'no soap' challenge.

It kind of depends on the person. I assume you don't work out or anything.

I always think it's funny when people say "our bodies aren't meant to use soap!" Our bodies aren't meant to use keyboards or have anal sex either, but I don't see anyone complaining about that (except women.)

Fine, but going through the process of smelling nice/fresh is such a small sacrifice for having girls enjoy it.

Or having people want to come within 10 feet of you.

Yes. I just get annoyed that people equate using soap with people being willing to get within 10 feet of you. I assume you were talking about people who actually do smell etc, and yes I don't like them much.

wow you're so superior to all those idiots who think soap matters

btw, if you don't use deodorant or soap and think you don't have any odor at all, you're either purposely ignoring your odor or you do nothing but sit around all the time. because there's zero way you'll make it through the day without beginning to smell if you move at all

Soap is almost completely irrelevant to the stink you acquire when you move around during the day. As for deodorant, that's a different topic than soap which we can discuss at a later date.

Soap is an excellent cleanser because of its ability to act as an emulsifying agent. An emulsifier is capable of dispersing one liquid into another immiscible liquid. This means that while oil (which attracts dirt) doesn't naturally mix with water, soap can suspend oil/dirt in such a way that it can be removed.

The organic part of a natural soap is a negatively-charged, polar molecule. Its hydrophilic (water-loving) carboxylate group (-CO2) interacts with water molecules via ion-dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding. The hydrophobic (water-fearing) part of a soap molecule, its long, nonpolar hydrocarbon chain, does not interact with water molecules. The hydrocarbon chains are attracted to each other by dispersion forces and cluster together, forming structures called micelles. In these micelles, the carboxylate groups form a negatively-charged spherical surface, with the hydrocarbon chains inside the sphere. Because they are negatively charged, soap micelles repel each other and remain dispersed in water.

Then again, that was probably all scripted by the powerful soap lobby, who are always vying for world domination against the toothpaste moguls.

It helps remove dirt/oil (saponification IIRC). You have to be fairly dirty for this to be insufficient with water + shampoo.
