Bobilion, there will never be equal wages across Europe because the cost of living is different in every country. The average wage in Bulgaria is still much less, but it's not as bad when you factor in PPP.

Well maybe one day the cost of living will the same in every country too. That would great.

The euro is a silly thing. No offense to our eastern bloc friends, but it makes no sense that the EU accepted them and not Turkey, with a much stronger economy.

Mmm Western European countries are culturally closer to Bulgaria than to Turkey.

1) Moreover Turkey ----> muslims and many people here dont want a country with 70 000 000 muslims in Europe especially since it is ruled by the AKP biggots.

2) Another big country like Turkey in Europe means even more bureaucratic bs.

3) Turkey has frontiers with Iraq and Iran :O + add the problem about Kurdistan.

So Turkey wont ever be accepted.

Be grateful over here avg salary is 5000 pesos, roughly 125 US.
A galon of gas is about 180 pesos, whic is about 5US. You do the math

Oh, I already know the reason is largely due to discrimination. Islam in Turkey is a lot like Christianity in the US - most Turks aren't religious. The AKP are bad, but it's kind of like neoconservatives in Western countries. They'll die down again as living conditions improve. It is different culturally, but it's pretty similar to Greece/Italy, only with more competence. D:

If it came down to economics though, it would be pretty useful to invite them. Joining the EU might actually be detrimental to Turkey's economy, but the government still wants in anyways.

That's really really rough. :/ But Enron just made 40 billion dollars profit!

Better sell it. But you're probably too comfortable with your way of life to do that. You probably believe you need a car, even if you actually don't. Whatever, do what you want but do not cry when you have to pay the bill.

Yeah it is tough, and to correct thats actually the minimum wage, not the avg. But still even for people with good paying jobs, its pretty rough.
We have about 3US in taxes ONLY. >_<

Why haven't you sold your computer yet? Oh right, because you're a hypocrite.

Yeah sure, just because I'm not living extreme I cannot blame people who drive cars. That makes sense, or wait, it actually makes it easier for you because you can now ignore my point. If I'm not perfect you don't have to change anything, don't even think about doing it. Way to go, keep up!
How was your computer delivered to you? How did you get clothes/food/shelter?

Why can't the OP drive a car, while you take advantage of automobile services in just about every aspect of your life? If you want to go back to the bare essentials and revert technology, why aren't you doing it?

I mean, GOD FORBID we increase our quality of life. It's pretty easy to fucking say that when you live in an industrialized country.

My first computer I had to carry in a damn bag all the way home, took me about half an hour of walking, talk about having fun in your free time. I get food and clothes with my bike or by using public transport. It is hard sometimes (with the bike) but I can add that to doing sports. Shelter (if it's too big to carry alone) is another story, I remember my mother used a friend's car in such a case but since I do not plan on getting a driver's license I'm gonna use delivery service. Still way cheaper than using a car because that would only be needed about once a year.
My mother got a car a few years ago which made us have a few arguments because I hate cars. They stink and they make people lazy. Their emissions are bad for our health, it's like passive smoking and nobody complains about it. Ridiculous! It's ok if other people don't care about their health so much but I do!. Don't make me sick, people!
Sometimes I'm glad if someone drives me a few miles somewhere in his car when I'd have to pay money otherwise but I do that only about once every month I think. If they had to take a much longer path I wouldn't do this either, I think I can justify it that way. Doesn't really make me feel better about it anyway.

I hope you see now that I am not playing the oil game. If I was to be a nature freak I'd have to live in the woods which I don't want. I grew up in a city so I'll stay in a city most of my life. In a city you just cannot live 100% natural but at least I'm trying my best. Can you say that about yourself?

I mean, it's not like I'm saying you shouldn't use a car at all (ok actually I am saying that...) but you could at least try not to use it so much anymore. Try to use it occassionally. Like when you have to go 5 miles, use the bike. Why not? I don't see a good reason to use a car in such a case except for your comfort!
You don't have to act as a role model, I only ask you to change your mind a little bit and think about mother nature a little bit more. Reduce what you can afford to reduce. Combine the need with the good and ride a bike, you get your food and you get fit at the same time. Your body will thank you for it and your wallet as well! Motivation enough?

The higher oil prices go, the more money I make. Yes, the cost of living will probably outpace it making me poorer, but compared to you peons I'll be a king!

Is there public transit available? Within bike distance?

Honestly I can not relate to the situation that well, I make my monthly gas cost in 2 hours (yay for tiny car + fat american salary), but if something was taking 1/3 of my monthly income I would try very hard to see if I could get by without it.

Suburbia is an awful, awful thing.

1. Huge boring lawns requiring pesticides, fertilizer, and tons of water. You can have a much more interesting garden that requirse a lot less maintenance and more importantly resources.
2. Big houses in the middle of nowhere so you have to drive everywhere.
3. Every street is named after a tree or forest or something natureish. Where is the forest the street is named after? Bulldozed to make room for houses.

Add in the fact that suburbs are on lands just outside the city, where fertile farmlands used to be. Only a small % of the earth is actually suitable for farmland, and a lot of it is being converted for this suburban life. This is possible to do cause you can just ship food across the fucking world instead. Yeah more gas used there. There's a food crisis going on too.

Suburbia doesn't work if we're going to try to stop climate change and deal with the energy crisis. It's funny cause families often choose to move out there for "the fresh air".
It felt like gravity.

Op is right, some people, specially those that drive 30 or more minutes to work, in a country that has rudimentary public transport in most of its territory are really hurting (USA in my case, but unless you live in a city or a small & very developed nation public transport tends to suck).

I really would like to live without a car someday. I live in St. Charles MO, about 25 miles or so from actual St. Louis. I think the total area which I inhabit while I'm here (between friends houses, work, entertainment, etc) is probably upwards of 40 miles. It's ridiculous.

I want to move to either an urbanized area or a suburb very close to a city where public transit is great and most of what you need it within walking/biking distance. Seattle, maybe? Boston? Don't know. But I am really sick of the drive-everywhere-you-go lifestyle.

boston has an amazing transit system (better than NYC i believe cuz its les crowded) but seattle, u still need a car. actually, portland isnt too bad either (oregon).

NYC, Chicago has very good publc transport system, u dont need a car, but it is DAMN FUCKIN CROWDED!!!

and to foradun, what a self righteous prick.

Over here, it's the present. And people still drive.

It's ridiculously expensive though. 1.51 euro a liter, yeah! I make like three times a much as last year but I don't really feel my living standard has improved other than that I own a car now
