Back Story: Been doing the graveyard Freight shift for a company chain. Last week I was set to work 7days in a row, after due to my error, I only worked 6.

Had 3days off then I came in to night and was told, "you voluntarily quit, go home."

I really don't know what I'm going to do now. The money itself wasn't an issue, but I just lost the insurance benefits for my family. Completely lost now.

So wait, you mis-read your schedule and didn't show up to work one day? Since when is accidentally missing one day of work assumed to be you quitting?

Sounds to me like they just didn't want to fire you so they'd have to pay for unemployment. That's bullshit.

That doesn't seem right... I don't think they can make you "voluntarily quit". If they force you out, you're technically "fire" and should get unemployment.

I was a manager at dominos years and years ago, a driver of mine stole money from a customer for a tip. Basically he just wrote in his own tip cause he was mad, was 5$. I fired him, and he sued me, i had to go to court and i lost, and he got unemployment, alot of it.

I'd check the labor laws in your state, some states are what is called, right to work state, and that means they can fire you for no reason. Some arent. Maybe this will motivate you to get a job where u cant be instantly fired for a silly reason. Most jobs the boss would of just called you when you were 15-20min late and then you would of given an excuse or just said i fucked up, etc. Forgiven. Your shift supervisor should of called you. If they are the type of employers to do what they did, and you didnt have any prior written discipline, then you didnt want to work there anyways... I cant imagine losing my job, 3 cars, mortgage/house, wife, family all depend on me. Good luck looking for another job, you might have to do something shitty fast, then look for another good/decent long term job. secondary education is important, too. If you have specific skills, trade skills, etc. Then they are less likely to just fire you for minor offenses, since they cant replace you as easy. The pay is better, too.

Note: I'm not a lawyer, so check with someone who knows first.

To the best of my knowledge, it's illegal to force you to "quit." If they fire you, they have to give you unemployment. Basically, what they did was wait until you made a mistake, and then told you that you effectively quit.

Now, if they have it clearly posted that they will perceive an absence as quitting, I think that's different.

Call a lawyer if you can. Or if it isn't worth it, find another job. Best of luck.
