Hes right though, you MUST be directly connected to them in order to get their IP. Otherwise you're both just connected to the AIM server so only they know your IP.

I think I get what you mean but I mean can you get the other person's IP from the conversation alone, I mean, does AIM(AOL?) store AIM conversations or after you end session, it's cleaned off their servers forever unless you have an AIM that can basically store conversations? For a direct connection, is this the only way?

but back to the topic... there are more ways to get someones ip.... than just directly linking to them... search for some tools there are a lot of free useful ones on the internet..... and once you have their ip you can intercept packets and with a little bit of knowledge.. all of which is out there on the internet you can use this information to find out where they are going and all their activities... overall... I'm excited... learning to extract information from blackberrys and computers... ~~ its just crazy... my professor is regarded as one of the bests in the nation.. and I really didn't answer any of your questions YES to aim No to notebook....

Angle b) Man sent a notepad file to someone a month ago, then said or did something on AIM which caused the person at the other end to say he or she would find out where man lives using their l33t IP techniques and lay the smackdown. Which is it?

Anyway, if they open a document with html, I'm pretty sure there is a way to make it ping some type of server or something, giving the IP address.

In order to do that, you can use some softwares like ethereal (which is a network sniffer). Thoses types of software can store all the traffic that goes by your hardware network. The difficult part if you're not really into that is to analyze those traffic logs in order to figure out the IP you're looking for.
