I know that every computer connected through the internet has an IP address, and this IP address can basically be tracked down to your home computer. I have a question though, can you have a conversation with someone on AIM and trace their IP down from that? I'm just really curious if it could be done, I mean, everywhere has IP, forums, websites. Oh, and is it possible to track down an IP from a notepad file you got from someone a month ago let's say?

With AIM, if you use a feature that makes a direct connection (get/send file, etc), you can get their IP, and vice versa.

And your IP can't be tracked to your address except by your ISP.

Your IP can give the general area of where you are at in some cases.

Hes right though, you MUST be directly connected to them in order to get their IP. Otherwise you're both just connected to the AIM server so only they know your IP.

I think I get what you mean but I mean can you get the other person's IP from the conversation alone, I mean, does AIM(AOL?) store AIM conversations or after you end session, it's cleaned off their servers forever unless you have an AIM that can basically store conversations?

For a direct connection, is this the only way?

Considering that URL just told me that I'm to be found in Oregon, probably not

For the sarcastically challenged, I don't live in Oregon.

Wtf? Why would a notepad file (as in .txt?) contain IP information?

there are forensic tools out there that allow you to do all of this I'm still new to all this since I just started my major in computer forensics... but next year we'll be cracking into the new sync computers on fords... and extracting gps information... and whatnot

but back to the topic... there are more ways to get someones ip.... than just directly linking to them... search for some tools there are a lot of free useful ones on the internet..... and once you have their ip you can intercept packets and with a little bit of knowledge.. all of which is out there on the internet you can use this information to find out where they are going and all their activities...

overall... I'm excited... learning to extract information from blackberrys and computers... ~~ its just crazy... my professor is regarded as one of the bests in the nation..
and I really didn't answer any of your questions

Only if you have a way of logging such things.

Angle a) Man got a notepad file a month ago, then something was said or done on AIM which turned out a last straw. Now he wants help finding out where this bastard lives.

Angle b) Man sent a notepad file to someone a month ago, then said or did something on AIM which caused the person at the other end to say he or she would find out where man lives using their l33t IP techniques and lay the smackdown.

Which is it?

I can't understand what you're saying here.

Anyway, if they open a document with html, I'm pretty sure there is a way to make it ping some type of server or something, giving the IP address.

Generally, if you want to grab an IP address, the idea is to analyse the traffic between you and the other element (can be a person, a website or whatever thing that is connected to Internet with an IP address).

In order to do that, you can use some softwares like ethereal (which is a network sniffer). Thoses types of software can store all the traffic that goes by your hardware network.

The difficult part if you're not really into that is to analyze those traffic logs in order to figure out the IP you're looking for.

I have used ethereal before, my programming prof. told us to use it for networks where you don't want a particular someone to use your net.
