So I was talking to this girl in a class today, and she had a shirt describing the satanic symbol which is actaully a pagan symbol but was smeared by the church. So she claims she is a pagan of a sort, I asked her if she had sacraficed any animals, she was offended, and told me that the focus of paganism is balance and peace, and pagans cannot kill animals, it geos againts everything etc . Then she says she geos to a church, and I'm like "what?" I ask her if she is protestant or catholic, then she says not everyone who geos to a church are not christian. I'm like WTF? I tell her that if she geos to a church, she must be a christian. Based on the fact that a church is a place of worship for christians. Then she makes a comparison, saying that using my assumption, she would be a car if she went inside a garage. Since that is not true, a person can go to a church and not be christian. I'm still like WTF? I decide to stop arguing with her, because there was no point. Then I see all these people looking at me, the idiot people (and there are quite a significant amount in my class) then some stupid girl actaully agreed and somehow saw sense, so she started being a bitch to me and saying how I was wrong to make the assumption that a christian would go to a church. I didn't want any hassle so I dropped the conversation. So is it just me or is there something wrong, and stupid in that comparision between a person being a car going inside a garage with that of a christian person going to a church?

A muslim could go to church if he wanted to. Nothing is stopping him. However, the car comparison doesn't make sense either.

Your right she's wrong.
Moral of the story?

Don't argue with idiots or they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. Or something like that.

she's not crazy - she explained it a little weird.

she means that among the people that go to church, there are people who call themselves Christian, and then there are the "real" Christians that really believe the Christian doctrine and really act like Christians (they try to live by what the Bible says). The people that call themselves "christian".. well... they see church as more of a social thing and not really believe in anything they hear at church. Most likely they're just there to chill/hang with people.

Technically the word "church" doesn't apply JUST to christianity (look it up, dictionary.com, wikipedia.com), although traditionally that's the context people use it in.

Wiki's opening line sums it up: "A church is an association of people who share a particular belief system."

Which would technically make you wrong. ^_^

Anyways, if you're in highschool or whatever, just know that all of you are idiots with zero life experience, and that in a couple years, none of what you're doing now will matter.

I know alot more about the world works, and the state of the country and its intricate machine more then anyone in my school. I'm one of the few that knows what really geos on in these world, and I'm also smart to realize that getting good grades deos not make you smart, and that its not gained through an innate talent. I'm not stupid, and I know a lot of things, and that included a lifetime of experience only few people in this world has really gone through.

And btw, she deos a lot of stuff through her church, like work, and she seems dedicated to it....

I've been to three churches in my life for 5+ years each, and from my experience church isn't a religious experience at all. Don't get me wrong, some churches may have very inspirational sermons once or twice, but the majority are sermons that have been used for years, reworded year after year.

It's really more like a social experience where people meet every week with other "Christians", most of the time it's a friendly environment where you feel safe to meet new people. I've met only a few people who I would say are truly Christians, the rest are the phony people you see in front screaming "Praise Jesus!" flapping their arms around like a goose.

You're probably talking to a girl who read some book like The Da Vinci Code and thinks she is some wizz at religions.

So she's believes in Wicca? Her analogy wasn't all that great, but if you think about it in the abstract it makes sense... seriously, I went to church for a long time and I wasn't Christian at all... I was even confirmed to the church when i didn't believe in Christianity. Also, there was no specification, while the word church has a Christian connotation, I believe it a place of worship for any religion could technically be called a church .

The word is a temple, church is not a generic term used as to denote a place of worship, the main purpose of that term was mainly restricted to christians, just like synagogues for Jews, Mosques etc. Oh and and I honestly do no think she was attempting to make any abstract sense for her comparison, based on the grounds that she claimed that she was quite a faithful pagan, and by the way she said it to me, you could tell, you can tell she had a deep belief in this paganism.

A church is just a group of people who believe the same thing. The "main purpose" of the word is to mean exactly what it means, not mean something you think it means. Most christians use the phrase "church of jesus christ" a lot and recognize that the word isn't exclusive to christians or catholics. She can call her religion a church if she wants, there's nothing wrong about that. It's not like christians own the word "church" and other people can't use it.

Frankly, your story just makes you sound close-minded and intolerant, you harassed this girl for no reason other than that she believed something different than you and used a word you assumed meant only one thing. That makes YOU the idiot.

Question, not meant to offend or anything.

Any particular reason why you always type eo instead of oe (like in "does" or "goes")

Also, knowing what "goes on in the world" could be many different things. You could be well informed about current events and know nothing of what college/living is like, maybe vice versa. :3

EDIT: Oh, and this part is meant to kind of offend: "A wise man knows he knows nothing"

You're the one who's stupid and apparently misinformed. Firstly, pagan is anything non-Christian in a traditional sense, as that's the origin of the word. Secondly, as stated many times, a church is not limited to Christians. Thirdly, sacrificing animals is not something that all "pagans" do.

And if you were as smart as you say you are you'd realize that while good grades may not reflect genuine intelligence you should "get smart" and just make the grades if you want to go anywhere in life.

While the first post made me wonder, this one cleared all of the doubts - you're an arrogant dickhead who insults little hippy girls and then goes to TL.net do discuss it.

Lifetime of experience? Only a few people in the world? Who the fuck do you think you are?

maybe she goes to church because she likes the people, or is involved in projects to help the community or whatnot. You dont go to church only to sit there and worship Jesus.

I was wrong to make the assumption that a christian would go to a church.

Those statements don't exclude themselves, you fail at basic logic.

It seems to me that you are not willing to accept that you can be wrong in anything, that is very unhealthy, and definitely not smart, through it can be sub effect of being smart, and ego that is created as result of it.

Well, in the "traditional sense" a pagan is a person who holds polytheistic beliefs, but the Church (THE Church ) kind of expanded it to any worship of false gods and thus heretics, but I don't think Muslims or Jews were ever considered pagans by anyone.

But yeah, agree with the rest. Highschool grades reflect performance through effort, not intelligence, kind of like KeSPA :x and you'll soon find that just being "intelligent" is not enough to make you successful, but working hard can. Combining the two is obviously the best choice.

Agreed with Evil Teletubby. One day you are complaining about how awful life is and how hopeless it feels, and today you are talking like you are a bigshot.

It is important to practice humility and compassion in your life. Even if the girl is misusing the word "church" (and it sounds like she is not), it does not make her an idiot. That is a semantics issue, not truly an issue of intelligence. Your comment about sacrificing animals comes off, to me at least, as very rude and judgmental, although maybe you were attempting to be humorous (very risky in this particular case). The fact is, many Wiccans and other pagans practice an extremely peaceful and compassionate way of life, full of respect for other people and other life (if you know so much, why don't you know about her religion already, hmm?)

Please, stop being so harsh and judgmental (maybe this is part of the sadness you experience...) and practice compassion and humility - for one thing, when you live this way, other people are much more sympathetic and eager to help when you complain about how horrible life is and that you don't know how to relate to other humans and so on, which I recall you doing just last week. Your arrogance in this blog is very off-putting, and Teletubby is right, when you are in highschool, good grades or not, high IQ or not, you just don't know as much as you think you do.

she says she's pagan, eh? does she believe in nymphs and faeries? can she do witchcraft?

that's almost as ridiculous as worshipping a god, in my opinion.

First of all, I would like to apoligize for my childish display, yes I can be arrogant at times, but I never claimed to ever be a flawless person. Its just who I am, and sometimes I do say what I should not say, and like everyone else in this forum and probably every person on Earth, I have a voice inside me that demands to make me feel superior over someone else or make myself unique.

My logic deos not fail , I don't know everything about the church subject/topic nor was I aware there were churches created to harbor non-christians or people of diffrent faiths, therefore my assumption was perfectly logical. I wasn't born in the United States but in Great Britian. I was too young too remember any experiences I had because after my little life there, I subsequently moved to Bangladesh where I lived for a lot of my life. I then moved to China, where I lived for 5 years. I moved to the U.S recently and its the first time living here for me even though I have visited here before. In conclusion, in regards to religious practices in the U.S, I do not know these basic facts that should be known, and thank you to those for having the maturity to kindly inform me. Also, I'm not a keen fan of religious practices/beliefs, so I do not deviate to learn about these things from my normal time. Second, the fact that some of you put effort just to humilate and insult me on my burst of arrogance, for your satisfiction, proves that you guys are just as childish and stupid as me when I wrote that post. Which leads to that you haven't A) learned anything from Highschool/matured from highschool B) Didn't learn too many small patient related helpful things because it was not relative to your personality or you deemed those things/lessons insignificant thus leading to your grande assumed cliche glorious triumph over me, OH MERCY!!!!!..........NOT!!!

uh thegreatbeyond you're the idiot

and if you didnt get the garage analogy you're also an idiot

Obviously I get the analogy my good sir. Now returning back, the girl could have used much more better examples then that horrible analogy because there were so many things diffrent in that comparison. She had the option of choosing a much more pragmatic example, but instead she chose a stupid analogy that would most likely correspond to the idiots in my class to make herself seem rational. Conclusively she made an effort to demonstrate her "power" over those who dare to question her reasoning. In her mind she assumes and believes that the observations she has made of our society and her moral character relative to those observations is somehow superb and necessarily unquestionable when moral and rational reasoning is put into place. She also believes that insane people are born insane, and she cannot accept a flaw in any of her analogies, views, moral character in response to the grounds that a question were raised questioning her beliefs as sheepish or conformist. She constantly puts effort that her views are sane and unique, and anyone who rationally thought and viewed our society in our school while sighting the intricate flaws and holes that needed fixing, their views would at best be in relation to hers/or same hers. I don't have respect for people whom rely on sheep/mob mentality to either higher their ranks or higher their self-esteem/control over others/ to win arguments/ to win battles, which she did partly. From the grande finale of our fiasco, It seemed, she felt a little better and victiorious when her social reinforcements came while I was forced to drop it. It was possibly in her view, a surrender.

When you apologize, you should JUST apologize. No but's, no "you did it too"'s. Just the apology. You are sorry or you are not. Your apology started out swell, and then you go off into some kind of justification for your own thinking and an attack on people who found your original post off-putting.

It is true, you drew some criticism that was maybe overly harsh or silly. This is TL.net, tho, and if you come off like a bigshot, people are going to chew you up here. Is that good? Not really, but that's how it is. You came off unbelievably arrogant. A sincere apology would do wonders, and I think that if you apologized sincerely, you would have a lot of respect, because we all get a big head sometimes, and everyone fucks up, but few people have the testicular fortitude to admit it.

Humble yourself!

I'll tell ya something else. There is a good quote about how one of the most important, and most difficult, steps in spiritual development is giving other people permission to be stupid. I think this is true. Think about it.

Peace.

I couldn't get my account info back from like 2003, so I created a new one, yay! I couldn't help myself to recreate it when I read this blog :D. Anyways, Thegreatbeyond, I won't insult you. Besides, ETT and Inky already took most of the good points. However, I feel the need to advise you on some of the critical mistakes you made, and how you could have avoided them. Obviously, thinking a bit more before the blog may have helped, but I can understand that you probably just got home, and you were frustrated by your own misconceptions and how everyone turned on you. However, take this piece of advice with you everywhere. Be modest. Even if you think you're the smartest person in the world, flaunting it around won't get you anywhere. Just take a look at Creationists, lots of fail right there. (JAYKAY Creationists). And in the event that you do want to appear smart, spend more time thinking on your posts, grammar and arguments help. My final piece of advice (I probably had more, but my thoughts are everywhere atm) is to know when you're wrong and graciously accept. While it is true that you did apologize, and many of the people who responded were childish in kind, insulting them does not help. All that does is warrant more flaming, and make you look like a bigger ass to them. Inky covered that pretty well, but I felt it should have even greater emphasis, to be done by a 1 post forum noob.

If you actually did read all of this, sorry if I offended you, it was not my intention.

Seriously though, this statement is just way off. Assumptions based off really limited knowledge are..meh. Also, even if the assumption is "logical", posting them around may not be. In the case of this particular statement, it makes you come off as the many things you say you aren't.

It makes you close minded at best, if somebody is going to Church and is not a Christian and that would not be part of my reality then I would be interested in why. "Because she is stupid" is not really an answer.

They are not interesting for me either, but why do peaple participate in them at all and believe in mambo jumbo is interesting imo.

People could go whit bandwagon and made fun of girl to fell superior also, worth to consider that no?

Analogy was to show just one thing, just like dog has for 4 legs does it make everything whit 4 legs a dog. I definitely can't alweys make perfect analogy on spot so common.

It was just used to get over "you have to be Christian to go to Church" becouse you were talking on that level that time, no?

Anyway it is not about that specific discussion that we don't really know. It just seems to me that you pre assume that somebody is idiot, before you know they reasoning. Anyway only way to really win a debate is to understand reasoning of person that you are talking whit first, then you can "attack" it in logic way. I don't start conversation whit pre assumed goal I don't try to understand reasoning to attack somebody, it is just a consequence of me seeing flaws in it.

Hey Thegreatbeyond, I have a suggestion. Go apologize to the girl for being wrong. In front of everyone. I'm completely serious. It will be very humbling and educational, I assure you.

Only do it like Nick said, you go up, apologize, and that's it. Nothing else.

Try and let me know what happens.

Wow, this is so funny.

Anyway, the more important thing you should have asked is if she participates in orgies with her "church".
Do you really want chat rooms?
