Chapter 25: Some places are sacred
You’d think some places were sacred, but it seemed some people would go to any length to take his crown. One moment Durn had been admiring some Mini Lops at the local pet store, the next there were bullets whizzing by his head. He nearly ducked behind the display of pine shavings, but doing so would put the rabbits at risk and Durn was not so callous when it came to bunnies. A roar on his lips, he drew his sword and charged through the hail of gunfire towards the protection of a parked car. The gunman stood just up ahead in the middle of the street with a look on his face that made Durn think he was too bloodthirsty to care that he’d hadn’t hit a single shot despite unloading an entire clip.
Durn, meanwhile, was exceedingly thankful for the ambushers incompetence. And also for the glacial pace at which he was reloading his machine gun. Durn didn’t ask for the man’s name as he leapt out from behind the bullet riddled car. He wouldn’t have had time to get a response if he had. His sword sang as it sliced through the air. The stranger had only just finished reloading his gun tried to bring it to bear, but he never got a shot off. All he could do was gape in shock for a moment before his head popped into the air. The gun fell with it, clattering to the ground as blood fountained everywhere.
Durn merely shook his head as the spray receded. Some people had no sense of honor, but he supposed he should have expected it. The promise of power made men do terrible things and the attack today was just the beginning of it. The sad truth was he’d see far worse atrocities before the battle had been won.
Chapter 26: Not all questions need answering
Paris wasn’t so bad it turned out. The people weren’t the most considerate and the food was practically garbage, but Elentos had to admit the whole place hid in fact have the advertised enchanting ambience. As he stared through the window of the millionth cheese shop on the block, he found a smile creeping onto his face.
“Umm, excuse me?” A voice sounded from just over his ear. Elentos reflexively spun around, his fists readied before him. “Woah, woah, woah,” a man, dressed in an absurdly tight t-shirt with cartoonish drawings on it blurted out. “I just wanted to ask you a question.” Elentos eyed the newcomer warily.
“What’s that?” He replied skeptically.
“Do you know who Twice are?”
What the fuck was this guy talking about?
“No.” The stranger groaned and slowly ran his palm over his face.
“I swear to god, no one in this f!@#ing country has any taste in music!”
“Are you okay, dude?” Elentos inquired, more disturbed than concerned.
“I can’t f!@#ing stand this s!@!” Had Elentos been paying less attention he would have died then and there, but he a quick step back meant he dodged the knife tearing towards his throat.
This guy’s a maniac Elentos thought to himself as he sidestepped another strike while drawing his own blade. His first attempt went wide, but the second found purchase. Clutching the wound in his arm, Elentos’ attacker lunged more violently than before. Elentos simply batted the clumsy effort aside and buried his dagger in the man’s chest. Only when he hauled the blade free did the corpse collapse onto the pavement.
Elentos had no idea who the f!@k this guy was,or what Twice was for that matter, but sticking around wouldn’t do him any good. The goal was killing Durn, but first he needed to get moving and find a change of clothes.
Chapter 27: A name hardly worth remembering.
Luolis had entered Paris with one thing on his mind - finding Durn and killing him. Yet here he was, standing kilometers away from the palace with a bloodsoaked axe and a corpse by his feet. He should have known revenge wouldn’t be this simple, not when his face was nearly as famous as the king’s. Hordes had come to France to usurp the throne, but eliminating the warrior who had fallen just shy of victory was a badge of honor these cretins were all too eager to claim.
This one had proudly introduced himself as RTK before throwing himself into the fray. He was foolish and green around the gills, armed only with a tire iron and determination. Of course that wasn’t enough. Not against someone like Luolis who had honed his skills to a razor’s edge. His blade could carve an elephant in twain. His fists could turn cinderblocks to dust. He was stronger than ever before, strong enough to claim revenge. Why did he have to bother with gnats like this?
Luolis glanced up at the castle. The day would come when he would ascend those steps and take what was rightfully his. Images of a dying Durn, his blood splattered against an empty throne, swam though his mind. Luolis felt the fury rising hot in his chest as his vision began to waver.
Let these fools thrown themselves at him. It didn’t matter. Nothing could stop his revenge. Not a false king and most certainly not a pathetic weakling named Artic. All he had to do was be patient. It might take a few days, but Luolis reminded himself as calmly as he could that he was nearly face to face with his greatest foe once more.
Chapter 28: Living on the edge
“Hey, you, you ever played Russian Roulette?”
“No… I haven’t.” Heartland said warily as he looked up from his morning coffee. Standing before him was a rather disheveled looking man with a bulging backpack filled with what could only be a pool noodle.
“Ah, man. Don’t worry it’s easy. You see, you put a bullet in.” Heartland’s eyes widened as a revolver appeared in the man’s hand. “You spin the chamber like this and... Voila you pull the trigger.” BANG Heartland’s heart skipped a beat as the gun went off and the man slumped to the ground. Not bothering to finish his drink, Heartland jumped to his feet. He didn’t know what the f!@k that was about, but Jesus Christ he had to get out of here.
