At the time I wrote my last blog, I was in a very different place in life. Not so much professionally, but in just about every way personally and it goes to show that things come at you pretty quickly and when they just start to even out.

It has been a roller coaster of a year and if you give me ten minutes you'll get the just

Not to come off as ominous, in fact if you average it out the year went pretty well. My older brother, after years of nudging regarding joining him for a work out finally got my ass to a gym and I've not really looked back.

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

I went from 265 lbs (120kg) peaking near 280 lbs (127kg) around 2015 to 190 lb (~86kg) just this week (I cut and pasted this from the fitness thread if you browse there too). Obviously I've not gotten any better with cutting up photos.

I joined a local Crossfit gym, and started to get my self back into shape; it isn't for everyone, but I'm happy I found a community in my gym that exactly met what I needed at that point and time in my life.

RE: Crossfit, I know people don't care to hear much about it online. /

I started running regularly at the gym in my office building which I'm lucky enough to get access to for free. After cutting WAY back on booze, the pounds melted off and I am really proud of what I achieved in a relatively short period of time.

Summer 2016 was spent in the gym, and it was around this time that my then girlfriend and I added a pet to our little brood.

This lovely, little bunny bastard is Hopps

That is Spock, Whiskey, and Hopps in total, and this little guy pretty much rules the roost of the three of them. The cat is afraid of him, the dog is unsure though Hopps wants to be friends with him, and he is probably the nicest of our pets to total strangers.

My fiancee at the time was working for the Humane Society, and as an added perk, she was allowed to take certain types of pets home for week long trial runs. Suffice it to say, this little snot figured out a way to stay longer. They are a good bit of work but most days, I'm pretty happy to have the little dude hopping around my computer while I'm wasting time after work.

That brings us up to about September 2016. It was around about this time, when I got a call from my parents asking that I come over after I was done working for the day. Suffice it to say that this was unusual and unsettling.

I learned my pops had been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer on October 12th, 2016. I remember because upon hearing the news, my fiancee and I drastically expedited our engagement.

9 days later we had a small ceremony in the park behind our house, and a dinner for our immediate family

Unfortunately, despite our efforts, my father was hospitalized again and after having a stoma put in, was unable to attend though we looped him in via his phone and a slew of apps so that he could participate to the best of his abilities.

We hoped that we could bring some amount of happiness into what had become a rather sullen Fall and to that end I think we succeeded.

He passed on New Years Eve 2016.

2017 has been its own animal. Obviously dealing with the loss of a parent is a big part of it, but taking care of your surviving parent and siblings is another. At both, I'm admittedly lacking.

Conversations are had about what to do with the house that was too big for two people, what stuff was left to whom, and a mountain of paperwork around his passing.

My father was undoubtedly the closest relation personally and in a familial sense who has passed in my life, and the strange thing about dealing with that kind of event for me has not been persistent sadness, but fleeting moments where he pops into my head.

A text message, or email I think he'd find funny, or stupid song titles we'd share and put a melody too on the spot or discuss what it would sound like in various genres.

Shortly after the service for the old man, I went to Germany for a work trip, and flew the wife out for a belated honeymoon in the Netherlands, France and London

Work and life goes on though, and I feel good at my job; I feel better than I think I ever thought I would ever in my twenties. My career is actually, kind of a career (again different from the early twenties), and I actually think I'm not bad at my job and I'll soon have the options to start learning some amount of code to make a real move in the coming years.

We're (longingly) looking at houses, and hoping short term the market sort of bows down to make that transition some time around the time when there won't be 22 offers on every decent house in our city.

I'm going to Iceland with my brothers for a week in August. Things look up, though I still feel like it has been a generally downward trajectory in many areas.

I'm excited, a bit nervous, and not really sure about whats going to come next, but I think that means I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

We'll see what the Summer has in store yet.

Nice blog, Mr. Servo, and my condolences with regards to your father. Make sure you yourself get that colon checked!

Best of luck on the house hunt, many friends of mine are struggling through it right now and goddamn, I do not envy them.

Adulthood gets in the way of things at times, that and this is my first whole summer with a motorcycle so I'm bordering on becoming an outdoor kid.

I'm due sooner than later and I'm only 28, may as well considering the rates of it in my family. To be honest that doctor's visit sounds preferable to the house hunting.

At least then its a medical professional having his way with me rather than a bank? He'll at least warm up his hands I guess.

Thanks man, it is a strange thing, but most people experience it sometime right? My pops was older about 70 which for me being 28 means at least he got a good run in.

70 ain't bad, just irksome because he could have had more time if he had taken care of himself and gotten the colonoscopies old guys are supposed to get.

He apparently hadn't done one in years. That is a bit frustrating to process, but not really useful to think about.

Thanks dood. I was actually in Paris with my wife a couple weeks ago, thought about seeing some TL'ers but seeing as it was kind of our honeymoon, I thought that may be frowned upon

Hey Tom, it's always good to hear from old friends and my condolences on the passing of your dad.

Congrats on getting married! Rabbits are seriously one of my favorite pets, and mine likes to watch TV with me, just make sure you tie up all those cords by your computer, wouldn't want anything to happen

Good luck with the house hunting and blog about the Iceland trip! Blue lagoon and some of those hiking trails are things I really want to do

You settle down some? Last I saw you were bouncing around because you were working for an airline? We learned about the cords, this little bastard loves him some cat5 cable.

I don't know if settled down is the correct term Graduated College last month and settled down in the great state of Virginia, living in Herndon which is a glorified parking lot working for a software company. Tried to make it out and stay with motbob for a weekend but didn't quite work out

The rabbit gets better as it gets older, doesn't bite as much. Ours came potty trained which was a nice feature and would reccomend.

You have a scenic view of Dulles though? I'm trying to be a glass half full kind of guy. Gratz on graduating and we may be in the same neighborhood soon. I have a niece due in September and my sister lives in Alexandria.

Always like your blogs, sad I missed this one until today. Hope the next one is sooner rather than later. Congrats on the wedding and the cute bunny! I just got back from Paris last week with the wife.

Sorry about your dad. Although my dad is still alive, I definitely see his health declining, and they're a similar age. It's something I definitely think about. Sounds like you're doing OK, but keep at it.

Thanks man, what was your favorite bit of Paris? The city is gorgeous, the one thing that bothered me was the French dining schedule. It was hard to find a decent meal if you wanted to eat before 7, or at least it seemed it at the time, but that was the biggest issue.

I appreciate the condolences as well. Just shoot the bull with the old man as much as you can, those are the times that stand out.
