The Current State of 3rd-Tier "Professional" Teams

I wrote this short blog in response to the recent announcement that Apocalypse eSports has disbanded mere days after it's inception...

As I have recently been promoted to a corporate leadership position, and struggling with a distinct loss of interest in SC2, I check Teamliquid not nearly as often as I used to.

And whenever I do, there's BS like this going on... sad, really

I remember in 2010/11 when SC2 was brand new I was on Team Revoki, at the time a well-respected semi-professional SC2 team. I wasn't a good player (Top 8 Diamond), but a bit older and more mature than most members and helping out with day-to-day management of the team.

There were many excellent players on the team, ranking from mid-master to mid-grandmaster, most of them teenagers. A lot of them had the misguided belief that they could become full-time e-sports professionals. My response to such ill-advised plans was always "Stay in School!". Maybe I said that because I was one of the lucky few who was able to turn a strong academic record in school into a lucrative corporate career. But I think I've my suspicions as to the financial sustainability of so-called "professional" teams have always been justified, especially at the lower end of the "professional" spectrum.

Therefore, to make a long story short, I'm not surprised at this news. As far as SC2 is concerned, the whole e-sports business model only works for a few players at the very, very top.

i remember rev back in 2011, i was really close friends with one of your gosu terrans, revshiver. personally, i think sc2 could have been more of a success if it was managed better, but we get what we got i guess.
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

Its like that in any sport though.

The top of the pack ends up making a lot of money - and later goes onto sponsorships / coaching whatever.

Mid tier athletes dont have that many chances (though their earnings might have been significantly higher than sc2 players)

In all honesty, i could have commited a few years of my life to SC2, and maybe even won a few tournaments in the end. What am i going to do after that though? Work at Mcdonalds?
And that ends up beeing the biggest issue with (e) sports .- the demand for retired players is 0.

OP is right though and it's not like a knowledge bomb dropped of nowhere. If been following the scene from 2007 (Starcraft 1) to today and it's plain to see. Listen closely to your parents is my advice i guess

What happens if they give you bad advice though? When I was growing up, school here was pure waste of time.

Let me tell you something you already know, life isn't just sunshine and rainbows.

I wasn't too thrilled about some of my education either, but never once did I question the validity of the whole exercise.

But of course it is no surprise that teenagers who lack life experience and personal maturity would rather spend their time on "fun" activities such as video games, rather than anything that doesn't offer instant gratification

I can't decide whether your post is condescending or not. At any rate, every bit of success I've had was despite my education, not because of it.

It's not patronizing. Sometimes you know the message you don't want to hear to be true

No, no I don't. Of course, my distaste for the education system is purely academical at this point since I've been out for quite a while. I already did my time.
