I had a similar experience. I was having trouble reading the chalkboard in college and thought they were doing a poor job of writing clearly on the board... until I went for that eye exam. I didn't have serious astigmatism, just needed to compensate for being nearsighted (eyes were too powerful, thus my prescription needed to be in negative diopters).

Astigmatisms suck. I have them in both eyes, and while my prescription is moderately weak compared to most people, my stigmatism makes it feel like I have 300/500 vision

That glorious moment when you put on your first glasses for the first time. It makes you understand why eye-opening moments are called eye-opening moments.

It's so much more quality of life when you can see cats (and trees!) more sharply.

Congrats to you discovery. And good luck for you surgery!

P.S.: It sounds like your mom had it all planned out.

"Oh look, an optrometrist. Let's check it out! Should be fun!" ;-)

You know what's even more eye-opening? Getting eye surgery after having worn glasses / lenses for years. Seriously, unless your vision is still not 'settled in' or you have some weird medical condition preventing you from doing it, get laser eye correction. It might seem expensive but you're going to save money in the long run anyway and it's so much more convenient than glasses and / or lenses.

I think eye surgery also carries disadvantages though, like ensuring you will need reading glasses later on, so it's definitely something to research carefully.

I have dry eye problems which apparently makes laser surgery a dangerous thing to do because it could make the dry eyes even worse. My eyesight is fine right now, last year I got it checked and there was a tiny bit of deterioration but they said not enough for me to need glasses. I wanted to get surgery if I ever needed it because I hate glasses and contact lenses... but now I can't get surgery. GG

Still got a few good years ahead of me. Getting to 26 without glasses ain't too bad.

I didn't use glasses until I dropped out of school in grade 11. I am nearsighted to the point that anything a foot away from me is just a mess of colors. I didn't need glasses until then because it's not like I was awake during school anyways. You mention cats. Well, a foot from my face I can't see a face on any kind of animal or person. Only three or four shades of color. I waited about 7-8 years before I updated my glasses at some point and my vision didn't get really worse except for one eye, but that was mostly sun damage (from being near a window when using a computer, thankfully I don't go outside). The colors are actually different between the eyes because of that, too. On the flip side, up close, I can see veins in corneas. My near sight is incredibly good. I never heard anything about a specific condition. My eyes are just shit is all. Much like sweating blood, I chalk it up to being a ginger.

The only problem with glasses is that they are incredibly frail, and it's really easy to lose track of them if you ever take them off. Cleaning them constantly is also an immense annoyance. But, you do what you gotta do to see anything at all.

I would have liked to have had surgery but lolmoney.
