It's too bad NASL ended the way they did. A lot of their ideas were interesting: The player entrances on the red carpet, the stage setup in NASL 4, the FFA, the random segments with the paintball/construction vehicles. And it was the only league beyond MLG to ever be on at prime time for NA which was nice.

Those NASL clips were all so amazing I really do miss that kind of content. Thanks for the post reminding me of all of them MrBitter!

I will always remember that "Ohana means family" and that family sticks together. I never knew, because I've never watched Lilo & Stitch. But now I do, and for that, I thank you.

Also, you helped popularize the Bieberdam; never forget.

Great post. I felt really underwhelmed by NASL but always felt bad about it because I wanted it to succeed, but it just didn't compete with any of the other leagues out there.

My favorite thing MrBitter took part in was the 12 Weeks With The Pros series, that defined me as a player I feel.

I always felt underwhelmed by NASL because they promised a lot but failed to deliver. They wanted to play with the big guys (back then MLG, Dreamhack and GOM) but lacked both the expertise and the funds. On top of that, the shows were often more about the entertainment on the side than the actual games. As fun as those videos of the crew going nuts are, I watch Starcraft 2 tournaments to see great games, not too see videos of people having fun.

If the most memorable moment of a Starcraft 2 tournament was non-Starcraft 2 related, then you're doing something wrong.

I tend to agree about the entertainment part. The shows felt very "American" in the sense that they were focused on a kind of over-the-top-entertainment rather than putting the emphasis on the games and players. With that said the production was great of course and i'm sure it appealed to a lot of people, just not so much to me.

Going to the NASL Season Four finals was fun. Doing the stupid audience stuff (Oh my god, I'm glad they didn't catch me on camera during Fierce Fitness) and hanging out with Chance was pretty awesome. Though really, the finals, to me, seemed to focus a lot more on the online production vs. the live event production. Which is completely understandable, considering the value of making a good online show with the community.

It was a good time, though, and I had a lot of fun.

Thanks for putting so much effort into making it great, Bitter, it's appreciated.

(I shouldn't have paid for premium seating, god dammit. With so few people showing up I would've gotten good seats regardless)

NASL season 3 is still my favourite finals, the ending was so good. Stephano winning, the NASL casters and crew joining him on stage, spraying champagne, then just dancing to the slow beats of m83's midnight city, the huge croud joining them in dancing and cheering and having fun. Perfect.

Season 4 had better production quality for sure, zero downtime was an amazing feat, I thought it was pretty far ahead of dreamhack and mlg's. But the small crowd did really lessen the experience unfortunately, the contrast between the production quality and the croud was so huge.

Good stuff.

Personally I'd like to see a 'post mortem' on the financials behind the NASL enterprise one day. How much $ did they burn through, and at what rate, and how long did it take them.

In the end, I understand that the NASL Season 4 Finals were forgettable for most people. I can get why no one recollects SortOf's amazing run, or Hyun's creepy-as-fuck massage.

When I think of NASL I think of what was the core of the Starcraft 2 scene in Southern California. I think I was around 19 at the time, had my first car and managed to get a discounted ticket for NASL 4 when the finals came around. I remember Demuslim playing a really great series against Violet and ended up losing 2-3, this was the time when he was in good form. Crazy PvP finals with drop micro from Liquid.Hero.

So when I look back at NASL, I think of community. Having been to other Starcraft events, nothing really says home more than NASL for me.

If you're interested in going back more to memory lane check out this website. It's a small collection of photos and writings centered around the NASL crew in 2013/2014. I'm still around and active in the local Southern California E-sports community, so if I see you I'll say hi!!
