Since my last blog, I talked about a one way ticket to Spain (2 years ago). Well, I did that and was one of the most enjoyable things I've done in my life. Now, my lease is about to be up on my rent and I plan on doing a huge road trip around the U.S, especially with how cheap gas is. At the moment, I have over $5000 saved for this trip. I am taking my car and my girlfriend of four years. We already have a few places planned out, but are looking into more destinations. I was curious how many of you have gone to some unique places I probably haven't even heard of.

Currently, some of our destinations are:

Washington DC
Pennsylvania - Philadelphia
New York
Massachusetts - Boston
Maine - Portland
Illinois, Chicago
Washington State
Oregon - Portland
California - Redwood Forest, San Fransisco, SoCal
Nevada - Las Vegas
Colorado - Denver, Boulder, Aspen
Louisiana - New Orleans
Missisippi - Missisippi River

We plan on staying with a few friends through out the trip and also camping out most of the time. We also know there are a few places to shower (truck stops) on the way. In terms of food, we've decided to try a few of the fast food places we've never had, groceries and local eateries. One of the problems we're facing is where to sleep, camping wise, where we can see the night sky at it's best. We would also like to see the northing lights within US boundaries.

I've read a few of the other roadtrip blogs on here which are obviously outdated but still of good use, but with times changing and more people signing up for TL, hopefully there is a fresher output on this.

Thanks for the help and ideas ahead of time.

While you're in Northern California and especially if you're camping, try and stop by Yosemite (it's breathtaking) and Point Reyes. If you also happen to be in town on a Tuesday and are looking for nerd things to do, check out Tuesday Game Night in SF.

Also, if you're looking for saving some money while camping, check out some volunteer programs especially at the bigger national parks like Yosemite. Basically you put in a half-day or full-day of volunteering and can stay for the weekend at a great location for free.

Good luck with your travels!

Another place you might want to see is Niagara Falls. The US side has a lot to do, but some people say the Canadian side is better.

Seeing the northern lights might be difficult within US boundaries (excluding Alaska ). This site has the info you would need if you will be very far north. http://www.softservenews.com/

My last thought is to be careful in the wilderness when you are in some of the states you have listed (Colorado, California, etc). Check with any park rangers about any rules related to bears. Many places you can't have food except in special bear proof containers (don't think a car or cooler will stop a hungry bear). It is a serious thing as bears will come after anything that smells like food.

One place a lot of people really overlook is Indianapolis, Indiana. It's one of the biggest cities in the country (a lot of people don't even know this, it kind of sneaks in there), and is the racing capitol of the world. (Home of events such as the Indy 500 and the NHRA Championship).

Some really notable places to visit in the city are the Motor Speedway Hall of Fame as well as the Children's Museum (Which has just as much adult-relevant information as child-relevant).

If you would like a more in-depth look, just toss me a PM!

GOOD LUCK!!!

If you're up in Washington State consider jumping across the border to British Columbia, Vancouver and Victoria (Vancouver Island) are just a stones throw away!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

erby - Yosemite was noted down!.
StarkTemplar - Niagara Falls was in the list already, but thanks for the tips on Lights and the wildlife, we were planning on bringing bear mace just in case, but contacting rangers seems like a good idea.
bookwyrm - Definitely checking this out.
VanSCPurge - I have a friend that lives there, but we're still deciding due to it being a bit out of our way :\
NeThZOR - Thanks!!
IAmWithStupid - This is probably one of the best advice I've gotten about this trip, thank you for this!
AC3 - We're debating it, we want to travel to Alaska as well, but I guess it just depends on our budget by then.

the northern side is full of idiots with dune buggies. You can go be an idiot in a dune buggy, or you can check out the south end and chill in some awesome, peaceful dunes
