What's with all the doom and gloom posts lately ? I've seen some in several threads in the last days... I'm getting tired of all this "dead game" shit, seriously. Being negative will only help bringing everyone and everything down.

It should be time to rejoice ! Blizzcon is upon, WCS Global Finals is upon us, the Korean scene is slowly reviving, the next expansion is soon to be announced, etc... There are plenty of reasons to be positive and optimistic !! :-)

Not really, but you're right. Let me rephrase to be more precise: even though there have always been "daed gaem" posts here and there, I feel like I have seen more of them in the past few days. And I'm really getting tired of it...

where did i say the game was dead?
the game itself is great. the mod kit or "galaxy builder" is awesome.
blizzard did a great job, and, Blizzard continues to provide incredible post sales support for SC2.
playing 1v1s, 2v2s and Zealot Hockey is a blast for me and my friends.

blizzard needs to have the balls to hand the competitive leagues surrounding their game off to some really smart event promoters. they did this by default with brood war.. and thus far its worked the best. Blizzard is not in the business of "manufacturing famous stars". I do not think they are even focused on it.

the game itself, the MOD kit, and "competitive event promotion" are different subjects.

Blizzard didn't become big because of Starcraft alone, they became big through Diablo and through I would argue by far the largest part due to the Warcraft franchise.

What the hell gave you the idea that Starcraft is Blizzards biggest franchise? It is small if not tiny compared to the Warcraft franchise.

when did i say Starcraft is Blizzard's biggest franchise?

its way behind WoW and somewhat behind Diablo3.
and its less strategic than both in terms of revenue generation.

WoW has monthly payments and Diablo works on 5 systems with mouse/keyboard or controller.

2014 SC esports has already failed. Most of Blizzcon's attendants are there for non-Starcraft related events.

This seems to imply that you think that Blizzcon should have a large attendance of Starcraft related people but its perfectly normal.

By keeping it in house, they made themselves oodles more money than they would have just letting kespa handle the thing. Having a successful league or leagues does very little for Blizzard unless their finger is rammed in the pie. They get all of the money events generate, plus the additional exposure they already got through kespa.

People being there for non-starcraft events is a good thing. It means there is a greater chance that someone who went for another game might see a sc game by chance and decide it is interesting and pick it up. Accessibility is only a positive, especially if you are trying to extend the already short shelf life of a game by planning three expansions. That means new customers, which are the most important thing in the continued success of a brand that doesn't have reoccurring costs like WoW or any other revenue streams besides the purchase price

failing to see any single good point in this thing

Realistically, I can't think of a reason that I could bring to the stockholders at Activision and explain to them why I need to spend six-digits on prize money for a game that I already sold. There is no proven business model that says "If people continue to play this game, more people will buy the expansion." because the people will buy the expansion regardless of the prize money dolled out for tournaments. By letting "the community" organize tournaments and give Blizzard a cut of the profits, Blizzard loses nothing in terms of capital. If the community's ability to organize and sponsor tournaments starts to wain, there is no incentive for Blizzard to pump money into a declining medium to attempt to 'save it', because a majority of their income still comes from subscriptions and individual product sales, not 'E-Sports'.

Now, if you want to look at this from a "But they promised x, y, and z and didn't deliver", then you may be right. Blizzard promised some stuff that was not delivered. Or was it a 'promise' at all? There was no verbal or contractual obligations that needed to be fulfilled by Blizzard to the consumers, only target goals. If Blizzard announced something as a 'goal', they could simply say 'Things got complicated, and we were unable to meet our goal', which is basically what they do say when projects fall flat. There's even a chance they could scrap their Legacy of The Void project altogether. I actually can't believe they decided to completely scrap Titanfall. But that's something that happens when you're running a corporation. You need to make money and you have a legal obligation to the stockholders to do so. Blizzard isn't a giant machine with infinite money and resources, so releasing another Diablo 3 could potentially ruin them. They focus on the projects and games they believe will keep them alive as a viable business, and since E-Sports is not a viable enough market in North America, there seems to be no logical reason for them to ever invest significant time or money into it, regardless of how stinging that may sound.

Realistically, I can't think of a reason that I could bring to the stockholders at Activision to explain to them why I need to unleash a war with the most established organizations in one the most interesting markets for my upcoming product. I'd rather surrender my IP adress to Miami citizens, so to speak. This post is totally unrelated to the thoughtless OP however. #YOLO

Miami? I think you're thinking of the mean streets of Davie, Florida. You would get cut out there just for wearing the wrong shoes.

I think Blizzard saw a big opportunity for "E-Sports" as a model for making money, but have since abandoned the idea after ruining everything for everyone else. This is why we can't have nice things.

People are hedging their bets so if the expansion doesn't get announced they can say "I told you so" and improve their internet image.

That seems like a really gross oversimplification of the issue.

Theres a few options here.

A) LotV will fail and everyone will go back to BroodWar

B) LotV will be a lot more like BW and will succeed.

These are the only options in my eyes, if LotV is lack luster, BW is the only option for me.

Tbh, it actually does come down to the gameplay in the end as it always does with any game.

The most important question you have to ask yourself is, "is this game really fun and good to play over and over?" With Brood War, the answer was a most definite "yes."

Every Brood War game was entirely different, the micro intricate and unique each battle, etc.

With SC2, a lot of the games are repetitive and the same each game. The micro is not as in depth because of the hard counter system. There were many things that us teamliquidites here on TL tried to get through to blizzard as far back as the Wings of Liberty beta.

Remember high ground advantage? Remember those Depth of Micro threads with Lalush showing what the game could be?

Remember all the talk of skins for each race? Customization for the casual...etc.

Balance patches? Too few, and far in between that never really address strategic diversity or balance enough.

It's the gameplay at it's core that is the single thing to blame. People try to scapegoat other things, kespa, tournies, etc. Nope. It's the gameplay.

Let's all hope LOTV gets the game back on track.
