The first is a result of taking early shifts for most of the last two years, it isn't that I can't sleep in so much as it takes far more will power to stay in bed past a certain point than it had previously (It'll happen to you too). The second is the crippling fear that I'll somehow miss my bus, or train. Not that I have the same incentive of hourly wages to be on time as I once did; this is the kind of thing where when you wake up and check your phone and see its 4:45 AM, you spend the next hour wondering if your alarm will really go off in forty five minutes or whether or not you'll sleep through it. The last is perhaps the most important. It is nice to sit down, have a cup of tea, maybe watch a bit of Proleague as you strap on your shoes rather than wake up fifteen minutes before you have to leave and sprint though the shower and the rest of your morning routine. To quote one of my fictitious idols:
Downtime's important. If I had to deal with all the fucking mouthbreathers non-stop without a break, I'd put my head in the deep-fryer.
The Randal quote isn't 1:1, but you get the gist of things; seldom do my mornings resemble an un-rushed, well rested build up to my getting into the office but the gods of caffination, public transit, and REM sleep saw fit to grace me with one this morning. I not only woke up and felt like getting out of bed at five AM, but made it to my bus stop with a perfectly potable cup of tea (not too hot or cold) with the bus two blocks away.
Like most modern commuters, I prefer to have a valid excuse to avoid conversing with other public transit riders and generally separate myself from the occasionally awkward situation of being made to sit asses to elbows with a complete stranger on a local bus. That is a roundabout way of saying I listen to music whilst commuting, generally using Pandora, but if I am feeling specific about what I want to listen to, I'll opt for Grooveshark Mobile. I've tried Rhapsody as well, but that and especially Spotify hardly seem worth the money for a subscription.
Generally my, "Mpls," station will tide me over until I get downtown, but this particular morning I wasn't quite feeling it. Having burned through all my skips, I opted to switch to Lou Reed, to see what kind of Velvet Underground or Transformer cuts I could get for my first track.
When I made the change to Lou Reed this morning, I not only got a Lou Reed song proper but also was treated to a song I had never heard before that I've pretty much had on repeat ever since.
It was one of those odd, all too infrequent instances of a song matching up perfectly with your mental state, and being in the perfect state of things to just appreciate the way everything was put together in the track. It was amazingly well suited to what has been a pleasantly chilly, and darker commute than you would otherwise expect for July at our latitude. Though I came into a generally over populated inbox, all emails were short, succinct, and easily dealt with, so much so that I had the chance to get a blog out, whilst sipping my nth cup of tea for the morning.
Things are looking up as we head into the weekend for the 4th, even if the local weather isn't. Back to the inbox and up for another cup of tea. Thanks for the read TL.
