Well I didn't read it yet and I will read it tonight. The premis though sounds like the kind of idea I would have generated in the past to validate hours upon hours of sc followed by a supporting evidence hunt.
Why would I play sctoo when I can play BW?

I personally felt the effects of continued SC2 play. I feel like I handle my job a lot better, multitasking and such.

I would be interested to see a study on the addictive aspect of the game, I know some who got into some trouble at uni because they played too many video games, not just sc2. How does our society draw the line on the amount of time spent in a game, where some of today's literally create a virtual world with endless hours of play time available.

EDIT: Found a good study on gaming pathology

Nice! Some higher learning applied to our beloved craft, not to mention the time spent studying and interviewing. Thanks for this shindigs!

I don't think SC2 is the kind of game that gets addicting. Playing a lot of 1v1s requires a lot of concentration, to the point that if you play too much you don't enjoy yourself playing it anymore. Besides, it's one's fault if he gets addicted by a videogame. Usually that happens when one doesn't have any other interests, which is a wrong thing to begin with.

Wax, how old are you?

Nice that someone did a real research paper on this! I always thought, that it is incredible, what (we) Starcraft players are doing to this game I remember when SC2 was released, that someone posted his "research" how fast you are mining gas with 1-4 workers in the geysers and how to divide them and so on. That is just more than trying to learn the game, that is damn science!

I always felt that there were usefull lessons in video games. For example, leveling in Diablo 2 in a way is very similar to building strength/muscle/endurance at a gym. A lot of senseless grinding with relatively little result.

Or laddering in Warcraft 3, where the exp decay would make you lose hard earned levels. Improvement is hard work.

Don't call Bogus, I'm sure he's busy practicing. Anyhow, Day[9] was watching a Brood War stream the other day. Also, Project Atlas.

Just because it's a study doesn't make it correct and/or true.

Here is a good article on the subject of gaming addiction

I agree with you, the person who gets addicted is at fault, but at the same time, developers try to get people to play their games as long as possible. Interesting, if nothing else.

There's a lot of observations in these studies that are very obvious to SC2 and esports enthusiasts. The community is actually a very diverse and messy place where there's a lot of interactions, both positive and negative, occurring at an extremely rapid rate.

My personal view/goal for this project is to at least highlight the positive impact that SC2 has had in the lives of community members, and how others can look at similar interests as a platform to develop their own skills in learning. I'm really excited to know a lot of you guys enjoyed the report!

Basically it says that we learn better when we collaborate and talk about stuff. Social learning.
Can we help spread the word and create pressure to get Rob Pardo to replace Browder as head of Sc2? Pardo led the team for broodwar, frozen throne, and wow/BC. We need to make this a thing before LotV development starts. Think about it.
