I was in a group of twelve new hires, the vast majority of which are fresh out of school. My team seems relatively specialized compared to the other job titles which are just as vague as you would expect from your general corporate entity; to give you an idea, my referral's title is, "Manager of Project Management," for the life of me I am not sure I could come up with something more redundant.
Within a team of under twelve people (Not the new hires), I am ecstatic at the opportunity potential for advancement, something which frankly didn't exist in my mega-corporate, national retailer, previous employer. We spent the majority of my day in and out of meetings, familiarizing ourselves with the most general of overviews of the business model and how we fit into said model. More starry eyes, in my new, comparatively green coworkers, but I was likely much the same when I first started into a formal office setting.
I am slated to be in, "training," for the next month, though roughly midway through I'll be expected to start contributing to production in a semi meaningful fashion. Mistakes and learning are to be expected of course, but I am feeling great about the processes and area I am moving into. Systems familiarity and the general process will come in due time, but I do plan on putting all the effort I possibly can into getting up to speed as soon as possible.
The next few weeks, my goals are a mixture of social and demonstrating genuine capability and interest. As the truest newbie to my area, one other, "new," hire has general systems competency but was merely an internal transfer, I want to spend as much time as possible seeing how the group fits together socially, and hopefully find my niche. I plan to shoot for a team happy hour in short order to get things rolling in a more codified, work social environment.
I don't plan to directly seek out too much contact, for fear of being the over eager new hire, but rather I look to be sought after. This won't happen in and of its own accord, though I did play some Foosball at the invitation of my new coworkers today in the office, we have that and a pool table in the top floor which is pretty awesome.
Other goals, which I aim to keep up for as long as I am accustomed to early mornings, are to routinely get into the office early or be there before the majority of the team are. Not only is my new, public transit (I am so happy to be back on the bus) commute easier to do earlier in the morning/afternoon, but I also would enjoy the solo time to address pertinent work before potential distractions come in later in the morning.
I could not be more excited from what I saw today, I am fantastically content with the size and attitude across the board. More to come in the coming weeks. I'll be much less active due to my having a proper job I need to learn, in comparison to a job I was ludicrously comfortable in, but things are looking up in the life of Thomasjservo.
