extra curricular literally means outside the curriculum, and I mean literally in the literal sense of the word and not the figurative sense.

Jesus that is brutal. I agree with you that when it's someone young and they're powerless under authority, we should give them the benefit of the doubt. Even the whole Savior fiasco... sure he deserved punishment, but I was surprised at the depth of the hatred people heaped on him. From what I understand, being progamer is pretty brutal and unglamorous behind the scenes.

I don't think you understand what the situation was: Savior was the one, who was in a relative position of power, and approached other progamers about participating in matchfixing. He was the one abusing his position of authority over other gamers. Also Savior was one of the more influential, successful and financially set gamers, so he absolutely did not need to do what he did - which is why there was the deserved negative reaction - no surprise necessary.

I stand corrected. I'd forgotten the details.

It's crazy that you even consider this blog really long, especially considering the subject matter.

I think it's pretty great that people figured out his story and decided to donate money. I'm not sure if he committed suicide out of financial pressure or shame, probably both, but hopefully the community support will help him in both aspects.

The current school system just seems like a problem though, it's not nonstandard but with so much pressure just to be ahead of your peers it just seems silly. If everyone just studied half as much the rankings wouldn't change but everyone is trying to get an edge.
I guess parental pressure might be a problem too, even if you aren't studying efficiently because of overworking if your parents see you spending all day and all night studying they will be more likely to accept that you did your best.
I guess it's a culture problem as well. Maybe they should adopt a more USA approach where you need extra curriculars and college essays and such. Overstudying for highschool isn't going to make you smarter, it just tests your memory at that point.

Plenty of extra curriculars, in fact I don't even know why they call it extra because it's pretty much expected/mandatory that you take classes on the weekends/after classes on weekdays since everyone else does it anyways. Says a lot about the amount of stress/pressure put on students that suicides are common enough to not even faze people. It's also pretty disheartening to know that some students feel relief that they have one less person to compete against.

Best of luck to Promise, hopefully he pulls through to a better place both mentally and physically.

In terms of extra curriculuars, the students I had did sports and clubs DURING the school day - during breaks or lunch/dinner periods. Mind you, their school day was 14 hours long. They also studied for APs and SATs on top of all this + being involved in debates and MUNs from the region. For the most part, because my school was a Foreign Language HS, most of the kids were aiming to go aboard for university.

I have also taught in public schools too - and I agree that the education system in Korea is horrible. I have a LOT to say about that, but this isn't the place for it.

I hope they catch that shit eater of a manager and toss his ass in fucking jail.
takes a real sick fuck to pull this shit without thinking of the consequences.
glad the community is doing such a great job, I'm sure now, promise, and a lot of other gamers know that the community is there for them, and that they won't have to feel that suicide is the way out.

i HATE this kind of people. It is as if he owned them and no man should be treated the way AHQ korea was. He should be life imprisoned for this causing so much pain especially for a teen who had so much potential in his passion. Essentially, he just killed off this good man. He should be charged with murder and scandal. Hope the law will catch to this cunt and make sure that he suffers for his crime

Wasn't the coach only 21? I read that somewhere.

The coach was really young. Maknoon had tweeted saying that he was the same age as the guy and always felt that there was something off about him. I too wish that this Noh guy will be caught and brought to justice. We can only hope that he is finally found and brought to court.

Really sad situation to hear about..

I really do wonder with so many suicides in Korea though, do parents just not care? You'd think after that many suicides there would be an anti-suicide lobby..

Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.

I think it's something that's like really embarassing and probably they don't talk about it. I read something along those lines.

man, such a sad story. Suicide is never the answer imo. He's likely disabled for life and it looks like this Noh guy is going to get away with it. Hope they catch him. I too am amazed by the community and how they were able to help. Thanks for keeping us informed and hope Promise recovers from this!

People slowly start to see that evaluation compared to other students/coworkers just is not very good.
Even completely hopeless companies like yahoo are stopping doing this pointless exercise.

Sad to see it so widespread in korea. This rating in highschools! Thats insane.
