I'd be glad to give it a read.

I get the Game of Thrones reference, but how would you place yourself along the spectrum with GoT with a more 'macro-view' of political maneuvering and, say, Lies of Locke Lamora with a more nuts and bolts description.

I haven't been very 'visible' but if you have 'security concerns' as it were I'd be happy to discuss over PM to allay any fears. I'm a quick reader with time on my hands.

I read a lot, and I would be happy to take a look at it. I do enjoy some high fantasy and sci-fi (tolkein and asimov are among my favorite authors), but I wouldn't call myself an aficionado of the genre. If you want a look from someone who is a little critical of the genre in general, I'd be good to read it. If you only want to look at hard core sci-fi/fantasy fans, you probably want someone else.

Allow me to read it and give advice about the progression of the plot, the tempo and interaction between characters as a last resort. I can swiftly read through long pieces of writing and process the core ideas.

You should get your writing/s read by a professional editor before scrapping them. Speaking from experience, because my gf is writing a book at the moment. It is completely typical for a book to look/read like trash for several drafts. An editor can tell you if there actually is a good book somewhere amidst the initial ramblings.

This sounds cool, good luck with it and keep it up i am sure the 318th version will be great
As someone who isn´t much in reading but loves well done settings or better "worlds" i have a question:

Why is "Dissentia" located on a "small" island? Is there a reason for it to make it an island instead of a for some reason isolated, continental country?

The reason i am asking is because i see potential problems with that, at least how i am imagining a potential story with this "kinda medieval, kingdom" setting because if you look at real history, there are 3 types of islands.
The first one realized that they will only "grow" and get more power if they are expanding and opening up, for example england.
The second usually never develops in a medieval state and stays at a tribe/hunting/collecting society, for example North America or Australia (not small islands but both were isolated in the "real" medieval). The point were they developed were when foreigners arrived.
The last type is just too small or to insignificant geographically to be important and more crucial in this case more interesting.

If i am understanding the preview correctly you want to keep it relatively small in terms of scale but i think the choice of an island can be problematic because it limits possibilities without gaining something. For example you write it, its really cool and one of the main characters comes out to be victorious and is the great super smart leader ready to conquer the world in the next book. But shit he is stuck on a small island .
At least in my mind a continental setting could open more options if you want someday go to a bigger scale, i am thinking for example of East Germany with the Berlin wall in terms of isolation that could be a nice starting point.

But please don't take it as critics or anything it is just a question from someone who has no idea how to write something like that.

I dunno man, island stories usually turn out quite imbalanced. Best of luck though.

I'd definitely say I'm leaning more toward a macro perspective.

There is a direct explanation for the island (Dissentia is actually made up of several islands) being small. Society didn't develop on the islands by itself but came there from across the sea. The descendants of the original inhabitants play roles similar to how the native americans live in America today. I suppose you could draw a parallell to the way North America developed after Columbus discovered it, with colonisation and everything that came with it.
With the risk of going into spoiler territory for anyone remotely interested, there is a historical reason that the islands are small and that Dissentia is losing power on the global stage. It didn't just kind of happen. This also ties in with the internal struggles between the major political players who all want to take what power there is to be had, much more limited than in the past.

I would love to read and critique as well. I go through alot of books very fast, so I'm constantly at a lack of things to read. I think I've read through a good portion of fantasy books out there right now.

I'm not sure what I can put up as qualifications though...

That actually sounds quite interesting. I think i imagined it too much like the Iron Islands from Game of Thrones, which are the worst part of it in my opinion.

I'd be happy to give it a go, I read about a dozen self published (amazon) fantasy/sci fi novels a year, so I have a pretty good idea of if it is in the good, bad or needs work category.

I can be a harsh critic (despite not being a great writer myself) so be warned, I will try to be as constructive as possible however.

I'd offer to read as it sounds very interesting etc, but you seem to have plenty of candidates and I'm not sure what I can list as qualifications other than having read a LOT of Fantasy and Sci-Fi

Count me in.

I'm in serious writing mode as well. Though I just completed law school, I'm putting in 1-2,000 words a day to finish this crime/thriller fiction manuscript. Perhaps we can do a swap and the differing genres will serve as a refreshing break for both of us.

I also happen to be a huge fan of fantasy/sci-fi. If someone's written a book (good or bad) in those genres, I've at least heard of them or have something of theirs on my reading list.

If anything, I think it'd be nice for us to keep each other accountable and sane. A serious writer's existence can be a bit lonely/crazy. Even if you have many supportive people in your corner, don't you sometimes feel like you drank down a shitty cocktail of doubt/fear/despair? I've had sleepless nights from wondering if anything I'm producing is worth a bent coin.

Of course, there's nothing else I'd rather do and no other skill I'd rather dedicate my life to mastering so there go my other options...

Hey if you need anymore readers, I would be happy to give you some feedback, even if I have three big exams coming up, I'm a fast reader so I should be able to find some time to read, if I think it's interesting. I also think I give decent feedback

I am volunteering out of different reasons . First thing is, I am always interested in that kind of literature (guess it's time to out myself as a LARPing guy?). Second, I have studied some semestres of history, therefore my interest in medieval-ish things is even greater (why am I even watching Starcraft?). Third thing is, I really love reading your write-ups and comments (although you warned me for a balance whine ). So, if you want to give me a shot, don't hesitate to PM me.

I am also writing some stuff myself (though I wouldn't dare to give it to anyone else since I'm kinda ashamed of the quality), though it is in german only.

Last, but not least, a helpful tip: there is a tool called the "Scrivener" which is used by movie script authors, authors in general etc. and is really great and helpful for writing in general. I don't know how you're rocking, but I got a Windows PC and a Macbook, so it sucks for me since one license is only valid for one OS (I discovered that the hard way ), but it may be useful!

Sure I'll read it. I've written a lot of prose and published some so I'd maybe be able to be of some help. Is it in quite a finished state or are you still quite rough?

Are you looking to prep it for publication or just get feedback on the story and style?

Either way, if you want I'm happy to read it.
